I've been accepted to both UF and Nova and I am having a hard time deciding. While UF seems to have a stronger program I would be able to live at home if I attend Nova thereby saving a lot of money. UF tution is 26k and Nova 29k so there's not a huge difference there. Both schools assign scholarships after the semester begins so there's no difference there.

I guess what I really want to know is how much the school you attend will influence your chances at residency? Does a student from a lower ranked school but with a good CV, lots of involvement and good recommendations still have a shot?

The more saturated the job market is becoming, the more it will matter where you went for school. I do not think it is right to judge a person only based on the school he or she went to. But that could be a reality in the future or even right now. Check out some of the posts I have seen here on SDN from working insiders,

I know. new schools they are, though.

It just doesn't make it look good for pharmacy is all I'm saying. My opinion. And clearly other people feel similarly judging by how many preceptors and educators I've heard saying they don't want to precept students from newer schools. I don't want to turn this thread into a new school vs. whatever debate., though. I'm just pointing out recent events and all lumped together, it doesn't look good.

I can only speak for two health systems I have worked for over the past 4 years. We do not take any students for internships from the newish pharmacy school in our state, nor do we interview them for residencies. Our clinical pharmacy team is made up of all pharmacists from established programs in state and out of state, some residency trained and others hired after years of experience. Same goes for my previous hospital as well.

To avoid future complications, I think you should go with UF which is a safer bet, and relocation would be not be a problem if school ranking is your #1 priority. But from what I know, NOVA is not a bad school compared to UF. It is a bit cheaper in tuition and you could save more money living at home thus will have less debts overall.

Decide which one, money or school ranking, is your #1 priority, and make your final decision. GL 🙂

Is NOVA still considered a new school even though it opened in 1987? I wasn't even a sperm back then LOL...
UF does have a really good reputation because its a heavy research school, on the other had NOVA has improved a lot the last 5-6 years, I went to their open house a few weeks ago and I liked what I saw. I think you can find a residency in either school if you put effort into it 🙂 So go to whichever school is more convenient to you!

NOVA does have a DO school thus their established connection with hospitals is a sure thing imho. My guess is that they could help their own pharmacy students to find residency as well.

OP, I would go with the cheaper alternative. UF does have the most reputable and best pharmacy program in FL but Nova is not a bad school at all. As far as tuition goes, the gap is slowly minimizing between the two. If you will be able to live at home in Nova and save a couple of grands, I would personally go with that. I will be starting at Nova in the fall so might be a little biased here 😉

They had already started the construction when I went to their open house. This will hopefully raise NOVA's rank within the next 5 years 🙂
