I'm an EMT-I and have no intention to become a paramedic. However, a few people in my service have gone through the EMTP course in hopes of becoming our much needed MICU truck in-charges. Both of them failed. I was shocked.

They told me that the pass rate for the test is only 23% 😱 for first-time test takers.
Is this true. That's a pretty high fail rate. Just wondering if anybody else knew anything about this.

According to the NREMT, the first-time pass rate for the medic exam was 64% in 2004. There's a section in their annual report about first-time pass rates for all levels for the past few years.

From personal experience, that percentage seems about right. I took the NREMTP exam along with a few people who went to medic school with me and most people I know passed the first time, altho some had to retest. In my opinion, the practical part was pretty straightforward. The written part was challenging, but like most things, if you know your stuff, you'll be OK. The only thing that's different about the written than some state (and class) written exams is that you have to pass each section (cardiology, airway, trauma, peds, etc.) to pass the exam. So it's possible to fail one section and ace all the others but still fail.

Hope that helps 🙂

i took the test 5 years ago and i didn't think it was hard at all. now, when i took the nremt-b test i had to take it 3 times. so when it came time to take the paramedic test i was petrified. as long as you go to class and read the book then you should do fine. btw i did very well on the nremtp test too. i say this not to brag but to tell you that if you are well prepared for the test it won't be bad at all. as with anything else you have to study for it. just my 2 cents.

Never met anyone who has failed the test personally. My whole paramedic class passed it first try and far as I know nobody I worked with at my service was "rumored" to have had to take it more than once.

I distinctly recall it being very straighforward and no biggie at all.

don't worry.

It does help to memorize some things, though.. I recall that damned Parkland formula appearing on the written. Also the rule of nines dominated a couple of questions. The skill stations are fairly consistent. For people who did well in their medic class, the 'megacode'/cardiac practical station is as expected.
Good luck.

NREMT Exam is a money racket. It's not a test of you knowledge of the material but a test of trickery. How can a person take a test and make an 86 overall score and continue to fail? Those who test in the summer months tend to have the highest fail rate. Those that test in the winter months pass with flying colors. My advise to anyone taking this exam is to take it in the winter months. You will have a better chance of passing. Massive students have been tested before Christmas and the majority have passed the first time. Some had to take it twice with a pass. Those that take the test in March and later, tend to have to retest and retest. So my advise take the test in the winter months.
