I went on the NRMP website, it says that residency match application begins Sept.1 and ends Nov.30.

So my question is, is it better to submit application earlier (like September?) or even if you submit it end of November does it even matter?

Is it like medical school applications where the earlier you submit it, the better? Is it advantageous to apply early in the process?

Thx,

It depends a lot on what specialty you're applying to as some of them will download and review applications (and subsequently send invitations for interview) earlier than others. Also it depends on how big of a slacker you want programs to think you are when you submit just before deadlines.

Yep- plus it varies between programs within a given specialty. You have to research your programs to figure out timing.

I'm kind a confused or there are some misinterpretations: the dates you have mentioned are for ERAS, that is totally separate from NRMP. The schedule for NRMP is: http://www.nrmp.org/about_nrmp/schedule.html
Any comment...

I wen't through and read the "information for applicants" page on each programs website that I am considering. It really doesn't take as long as it sounds. In the specialty I am applying to (and among the specific programs I'm looking at) I would say the most common deadline is Nov 1, but there are a significant number of programs that have deadlines that are quite a bit earlier. I suggest reading up on all the programs you're looking at.

Thx for posts guys,

So 2 follow up questions then:

1) What is the difference between ERAS and NRMP?

2) I understand that website have deadlines dates, e.g. Nov 1, so again, I ask, does it matter if I submit my application Sept. 20 or Oct. 31?

1. ERAS is the application service. NRMP runs the actual match. They're related but different. Brodmann was being a bit pedantic I think...or confused. In either case, you need to register with both and your rank list will go through NRMP. ERAS doesn't really have "deadlines" per se, application deadlines are set by individual programs with Surgical programs generally earlier than IM/Peds/FM.

2. Application timing does matter but it's not really that straightforward. If you have a solid, but incomplete app, applying early doesn't really hurt and might help (get an IV offer you might not otherwise get and really impress them on interview day). If your app isn't stellar, waiting a little bit (for an awesome LOR, for a transcript that includes all honors, for a 250+ Step 2, etc) is probably beneficial. The caveat to that is that since this is a rolling process and programs only interview a certain # of applicants, the longer you wait, the lower the chance of getting an interview.

My personal thought is that, as long as your app is relatively red flag free (arguments exist as to whether IMG/FMG status is such a flag), you should apply early. The filters that PDs use don't throw out your app, it just gets hidden. A week later, when they run it again and your sub-I grade or Step 2 score is in and you now meet their interview/review criteria, your app rises to the top of the pile and you're golden. If you wait until the day before the program's deadline OTOH, you risk all of the IV spots being given out already and you wind up on a wait list.

Ah cheers, clears up a lot!

I've been on a few program websites, they all say their deadlines. So is there a general, "opening" day? Like Sept.1?

Also, I'm planning to do my Step 2 in July. How many weeks does it take to get score? 6?

Will that leave me enough time to submit an early application (like early Sept.)

july is past. step 2 in july?

btw, a program director told me at a residency fair that some programs deactivate your app and never look at it again...what this means, hell if i know.

Yeh, my bad. I'm talking about Summer 2011. I'm applying next summer, not this summer.

Cheers,

Will you still be able to get a residency if you only apply through ERAS or do you need NRMP for them to accept you for a residency program?

To participate in the Match, you need to register with NRMP. To get an outside the match position (if you are not an AMG senior) you don't have to register with NRMP.
