I was looking over the 2009 NRMP match results (http://www.nrmp.org/data/chartingoutcomes2009v3.pdf), as DO students I read on there we are grouped with 'independent applicants', which I think is completely bogus. Shouldn't they include us with American grads?

I mean for example for Anes: an US allopathic applicant with a score step 1 score of 201-210, 152 matched and 17 didn't matched.

But for independent applicants with same numbers 11 matched 41 didn't matched. Even if you have 231-240, 30 matched and 30 didnt match. So according to NRMP match DOs are screwed no matter how high your board score is? How are we suppose to interpret the data then?

I think the numbers are completely skewed for DO students, because I know plenty of people with low board scores that have successfully matched MD anes, ER, IM, and Neuro. Of course any residency PD would like to match all MD US students, but not all places are Mass General or Johns Hopkins. Is there any study out there that shows how DO students do in MD match?

Yea that groups DO's and Foreign grads together.

This shows how DO's matched overall, but not by specialty. Page 9. It was around 71% this year. That page also shows how low of a % IMG's match every year, which tells you the data in the link you posted is indeed very skewed.

Agree very skewed.

In fact if you were a IMG then you actually stand a better chance for matching a MD program. As long as you have the grades, board scores.

If you put a DO and a IMG side by side and both apply to the same competitive program. The IMG has the edge, simple because they have the MD after their name. I have seen surgical program websites that made a point to explicitly state, "We accept IMG applicants." No mention of DOs and if you look at the resident pictures you don't see DOs at all. There is still alot of discrimination out there still. That being said, I don't think it should keep you from applying to any and all MD programs if you are a DO and are confident in your abilities.

How so?

I'm looking at the statistics of DO and IMG applicants from 2006-2010.

DO applicants have roughly 70% matching success over the 5 years.
US citizens IMG have roughly 49% matching success over the 5 years.
Non-US citizens IMG have roughly 42% matching success over the 5 years.

Also, you can note that matching percent of both US & Non-US IMGs have gone down over the last 5 years while matching percent of DO students have been consistent and stayed around 70%.

an MD student has 0 chance matching into AOA residency, just some food for thought.

That doesn't matter if there are not many spots to apply to. (for the desirable lifestyle specialties)
