Has this (interesting, somewhat unbelievable, am-I-missing-something) trend been explained before. (NB: there are some conflicting numbers, slightly, year-to-year, in the reports.) "Radiation oncology" was not a word in the NRMP dictionary until 1993.

From the mid-1980's to 1993 the majority of programs and most of the "best" programs were outside of the match. I matched at a "top" progrma outside of the match. I had written contract in October of MS4 year (1988)
