Hi Guys,

First time poster, long time reader. I have been accepted to NSU, AZCOM, and the Western Campus in Oregon. I am having a really hard time deciding between the three schools. Originally, I am from Portland. My wife is from Poland so she does not care where we move (in fact, she would not mind some time in a warmer climate). I'm not one of these people who come here without doing any research. I've gone through the school specific forums (which is mostly just people asking about interviewing), and read the other threads here with similar topics (most of those threads are three-plus years old).

A couple of things. With living expenses and tuition the schools are relatively the same. I have family in Portland (plus for Western), and in Tampa (four hours from NSU, but also a plus). I loved the facilities at both NSU and AZCOM. Both NSU and AZCOM had, in my opinion, good match lists. I have no family in medicine so I realize that I don't have that going for me in getting a residency spot in the future🙂, so like a lot of people, I will just have to rely on hard work. The housing market has CRUSHED southern Florida, so I may be able to offset some living expenses by buying something. My wife is an ESL teacher, obviously a bit more opportunity in FL and AZ. Weekend getaway to the bahamas is like 49 bucks a night through cruisesonly mail letter that I get to my email...Also, I have heard a lot about the reputation of NSU (a guy in my church places doctors through Providence in Oregon and he says NSU students are highly regarded).

Some other things I have heard is that AZ has had difficulty in the past arranging some rotations and this year they bumped class size by 100 students from 150 to 250. Seems like this will complicate things even more. Also, it seems that Florida has a more established medical network (I was talking to someone and he gave the example of only one cardiology fellowship in all of Phoenix). Also, I have done literally hundreds of hours of shadowing and volunteering to know that in the future I don't want to spend all of my time in clinics, I would enjoy some Operating Room time as well.

I am slightly leaning toward Florida and have put my first chunk of deposit down. I have not put my deposit in for AZCOM or WOR, but still have two more weeks to the deadline for both. Thanks a lot for your imput.

You seem pretty decided... I say go with your gut! It's what feels right to you and your wife... As long as you work hard, you'll succeed anywhere!

I only pray I'm in this position at some point...

That said, all things financially being fairly equal, it seems you have ruled out Western, are hesitant on AZ, and seem to like NSU the best. Does your wife have any particular thoughts about FL or AZ? Does she like the idea of hurricanes? Does she like the idea of a desert? She says she doesn't care, but in 3 years she might (just saying)... Make sure she isn't just being 'supportive'... anyway, additionally jobs for her, I would think they're in high demand, but schools don't have a lot of money, are there actually jobs in both places for her? Some of these are fair to ask yourself as well, do you want to live in a desert? Coming from Portland, it would be a drastic shift, does that outweigh dealing with hurricanes? Just thoughts... Best of luck, and I'm sure you'll do fine matching 😉

I too hope to be in a similar position in about 2 years. As of right now NSU is standing out as my #1 choice. The location has a lot to do with it. I'd love to be able to study while lounging at the beach! I've visited that area before, been to the Hard Rock Seminole Casino right down the street. It's a pretty nice area, a lot of diversity. Only bad thing is no tornadoes there! 😉

Anyway, I agree with what was said above. It looks like you have already made up your mind, so I'd go with your gut. Sometimes you have to put the stats and others' opinions aside and just go with what "feels" right! Best of luck to you! 🙂

I will see you at NSU this fall, you seem to have already decided!

Wow, the only thing you mentioned about Western-OR is "I have family in the Portland area".

As others have said it sounds like you've made up your mind. FWIW, I live in a neighboring state and would have chosen NSU as well. That's without having any family in FL.

Go to NSU:

-Your wife will love it

-You will love it

-Rotations are bomb diggity.

-The housing market is redonculously cheap.

-Did I mention your wife will love it?

That's relative. Maybe to buy, but renting in Davie still seems expensive.

Agree about the wife part though. If she is miserable, I can assure you, you will be miserable... So, FL does sound like a good bet. Plus, NSU seems like a really solid program.

As far as renting goes, the Davie area is pretty expensive if you want something nice.

I am going down this weekend to check out some places and the cheapest you can find a 3/2 without it being terrible is $1500. And finding them for $1500 is not easy. This is for a house mind you. If you want to live in a condo/town home/apartment then you can find a 3/2 for slightly cheaper.

If you can afford to buy a home then you can find some great deals down here. For me, buying is just not feasible since I will be supporting my family off of loans already 🙂

Agreed. If we are talking about renting (which will be the case for most med-students), housing is anything but cheap.

I checked out rentals while I was down there as well and can confirm that if you want anything decent, you will be paying $1500 and up.

There is no way you can call that cheap, especially when you consider that there are schools in areas where you can rent great places for $500.

Obviously buying is a different story, but as I said, for most med students, that just isn't a reality.

I agree with what you're saying on the rental front. Prices are comparable to what they are out here in sunny southern california (ie: not cheap).

Personally, I'll be buying a small place, so I'm fortunate enough to be able to take advantage of the housing crunch and all those foreclosures. It was the cheaper option long term, just doing the arithmetic.

If you can afford to front the money right off the bat, I'd strongly suggest it for fellow students.

No lease, no crappy landlords, and no worrying about a return of your security deposit. If you're not keeping the place past med school, you can also sell it and get at least a partial return on that investment. While it's shortsighted say the housing market will recover and you can stand to make money on your purchase, it's something to consider for sure.

Keep in mind real estate deals usually have a closing period of 60-90 days. Plan accordingly.

Thanks for the input guys. I interviewed at Western in Lebanon yesterday and for some people it will be great, and in a couple of years when all the kinks are wrinkled out of a new program, it will be even better. The private school my wife teaches at (ESL) has two schools in the Miami area, so that is also another plus. I think I'm leaning more and more to Nova. Thanks for the replies, and it is looking like I will see a couple of you this fall.

As someone who just interviewed at NSU I can only suggest that you consider going anywhere else but Nova. Not because of anything you said or want, but because I'd like to go there. I do realize that this advice will not be helpful in anyway and I apologize for that.
