Um yes, please elaborate. I've already paid my deposit and withdrew from the other programs I had applied to... but would definitely like any sorts of heads up from a current student before I will matriculate

Alright guys so here's the thing thats really starting to frustrate me. Now I know my decision was made dec. 7th and thank God I got accepted. However, I have not received an acceptance package yet...only the webstar thing. This is frustrating me because its already Dec. 24th and had I not called to find out my deposit due date is on Jan. 7th. I would have gone on not knowing and potentially received my acceptance package stating so at a date that was too late for me to get the funds....I just wanted vent really...I know theres nothing I can do about it except be patient. But I would like to go on vacation with some peace of mind you know....😕
 
You're able to pay your deposit before you receive your acceptance package. Just call the bursar's office, provide your SS# or NSU ID # and you should be able to pay via credit card.

If you're anxious about receiving your acceptance letter itself, just hold on there. You're in. I do understand that it is surreal until you receive the letter itself. Happy Holidays!

I was told that if I didn't receive my acceptance packet by the end of last week to call the admissions office and they would fax me one. You may want to try that.
 
Does anybody know how long orientation is? I looked on the website, and there's a letter from 2 years ago posted on there that says it's a week long, but there's also a pdf with 2 weeks worth of activities for orientation for this past year. I know this is really early, but I am just curious. Thanks!

We had one week of MedStart and one week of orientation. MedStart was "required" but many did not attend. It was really a nice deal to be here for the couple of weeks before as we were able to make some really good friendships with time to hang out before the madness of school. So that once school started it was easier to find people to hang out with who would do the things you like with you within that limited free time.

That is really helpful, thanks. I actually have another question now, though. The MedStart thing looks like it starts in July, but I'm planning to live in the grad student housing, which doesn't let you move in until August 1st. Does the school provide some sort of housing for students before August 1st or are we on our own to pay for a hotel for a week? Thanks again!
 
A bunch of M1s had this problem earlier this year. Believe it or not, they were expected to just find accomodations on their own for that week.

To be frank, most of what they do during orientation is pretty useless, except for the first aid training. If I were in your situation, I'd just skip the first week of orientation altogether. Just make sure you know when your society is scheduled to have first aid, and take the course.

Society? That's sorta crappy that you have to find your own housing, I mean, it's only a week, but still, a week in a hotel is a LOT of money. 🙁
 
Your class will be broken off into 'academic societies'. When you get to take your first aid course, as well as when your labs (anatomy, opp, histo, cp) will also depend on which society you're in.

As for accomodations, I know it blows. Some students in our year decided to shack up with their classmates (i.e. the ones that are living in apartments) for a week, before they could move into residence.

For our class, they assigned the societies in May/June. The purpose of the societies is to bring together students from different backgrounds. The school takes into account your MCAT and GPA in hopes of creating a society that would be able to help one another. Truthfully, some societies function better than others. It is dependent on how involved your society president and peer mentors are.

To bring up a previous point, there were relatively few individuals who were left without housing during the medstart week and had to stay in a hotel. I'm quite sure your fellow classmates would let you crash at your place for that week. My roommate and I had two classmates stay at our townhouse during that week.
 
does anyone know how to pay your acceptance fee online?
 
Med-Start itself in terms of school was worthless IMO, but getting to meet my new classmates in a stress free time was fantastic. Once you meet some people from you class find someone and stay their couch or something, I had a classmate stay in my extra room during medstart. I know a couple of friends of mine also hosted classmates and it wasn't too stressful. So if you want some party time with your new friends before school medstart is worth it, again only my opinion.

So I log into webstar and when I get to the point after 'make a credit card payment' - ie., the drop down that asks you to select a term. There is no option for Fall 2008 which in the instructions says to choose. What did you guys choose when you made your deposit online?

I would make a call to the Bursar's Office to make your payment. You're correct about needing to select the "Fall 2008" term.

I had the same problem. I ended up having to pay over the phone, and they wouldn't take a discover card. They seem to have some proiblems with this whole system..

Oh man....mine says its 'due by January 7' and thats monday, so does that mean paying on that day would be too late?

Man, this is screwed up...

I wanna pay, but there isn't the option for fall 2008. Should I just choose anyone since its not for enrolling in classes anyways?
 
I am paying tonight online (I hope) or calling tomorrow and paying by credit card. Do we know when our orientation starts, or not? I have to be able to tell my navy recruiter whether I can go to ODS this summer or not.

On that note, is anyone else doing an HPSP?

Hey Alison did you have the same issue with regards to the term you choose? Specifically, with Fall 2008 not being an option.
 
I say just give them a ring and pay your deposit over the phone if you are going to pay by card. I did it this way and the whole process took about 5 minutes with no problems.

I got my confirmation letter a few weeks later in the mail, and I live way out of state.
 
This is off point-- but how do the new acceptees go about financing the education. In terms of: The Steps.

Do I wait for Nova to send me info and directions on how to apply for financial aid? Do I look up info about Stafford loans? Fly to the school and ask questions? I straight up have not a clue how to approach the financial aid issue, and I would hate to "miss a deadline" or something like that. When is the appropriate time (month) to begin gathering info to begin the aid app process?

Also-- as a M1, is a car necessary at NSU? I'm asking because my old car is beginning to wear down, and I was going to see if I could go car-less for the first 2 years, and not worry about paying for another one till after the M2 year.

I've been worried about money too. I've borrowed about as much as I dare throughout this application process (mostly on credit cards). Now I don't know how I'm going to pay the second deposit or move my family across the country on top of paying off my debts so I don't have a bunch of monthly payments during school. Isn't there a limit to how much stafford loan money they'll allow each year? I don't want to borrow too much... I am strongly considering an HPSP with the Air Force but I don't love the idea of indentured servitude.
 
hey guys/gals, how long after you submitted the secondary until you received an interview invite? I'm a late applicant, just sent in my secondary on Saturday, and LORs might still be a week or two (UGH). I live about 40min from the campus and would LOVE to go here!

Pay by phone with the bursar's office using your NSU ID. That's the quickest way to do it since Webstar isn't providing the Fall 2008 option.
 
Nova will send you information on how to apply for financial aid. If you want to be ahead of the game, there are links on the website where you can apply for loans. For new acceptees, most students get the standard full amounts for Stafford subsidized and unsubsidized loans. The rest of the cost will be provided by Grad Plus loans or whatever means you choose (ie, personal loan, scholarships, etc). It's a good idea to start filling out your FAFSA since that will determine whether you're eligible for loans. The vast majority of students are.

If you live on campus or at one of the nearby condo/apartment complexes (Sunforest, Sundance, Royal Grand...etc), you do not necessarily need a car. If you're willing to walk a couple of blocks, you can get access to supermarkets, restaurants, drug stores, etc. There are ways to get around it if you so choose. It would be a mild convenience especially if you enjoy a limited social life. Hope that helps.

There is a cap to how much Stafford you can take out for your entire education. Many students do not reach that cap. Even though you reach that cap, there are alternatives to financing your education. As I mentioned, the Grad Plus loans are good option.

I'm not sure about the timeline for those who submitted their application last year, but I know interview invites were given through March. Best of luck.
 
HemoOncoDoc: You are one very helpful current NSU student. THANK YOU for answering many of our questions, and promptly as well. Seriously, its much appreciated. I'm going to figure out who you are next year... and give you a biggggg hug.

And hold up, only a limited social life? I specifically remember my tour guide sharing his stories of how NSU students only need to study a couple hours and night-- which leaves time to party it up in F.L. (my fav bar in Fort L is the Martini Bar-- hope med students go there!), and that the first week of school he was so drizzled he cracked his head on something and hurt his neck... and how an M3 used OMM to make him feel better.

Funny story to tell interviewees... I guess it was appropriate 😉 but it made me realize OMM must have its benefits!👍

You're quite welcome. I was in your position last year and found the upperclassmen extremely helpful. So, I'm just passing down the "wisdom." Hugs, no, Starbucks cards, yes, j/k!

There are individuals who can afford to go out everynight, but the vast majority study more than a couple of hours a night to keep on top of the coursework. This would be the "ideal" condition.
 
i am having a dillemna on whether to choose NYCOM or NSU. I got accepted to both and really need some direction. I LOVE NSU's campus (with the sweet pool and rockclimbing wall) and they seem to have a solid program. my question is can NSU 4th year students do their electives at any hospital or does it have to be affiliated with NSU or has to be somewhere in Florida?

Feel free to PM me of any thoughts and maybe some insight of what it might be like to be an NSU med student. THAAANKS.

I called there about 1.5 months ago and was told I was complete.. however, online it has no receipt of my signature page or the lor's.. do they just not update the online thing?

4th year students at NSU can do their rotations anywhere they wish. However, you are required to do 3 months of rural medicine rotations, 2 of which you have no option of choosing, and 1 where you get to choose from a list of available rotation sites. This may be undesirable and excessive for a lot of people.

If you were to strictly compare clinical education at both schools, I would definitely say that NYCOM has the upper hand. New York city will undoubtedly have some of the busiest hospitals in the country, and a TON of places to rotate.
 
I wouldn't rely on the online portion. I would call again to make sure they have received the necessary paperwork. Best of luck.

My file has been complete since early October and, according to my NSU online account, they have received my signature page (oh, and check of course 🙄) and it has not been updated since. I keep calling the people at extension 1101 and they keep forwarding me to extension 1127, which from what I can tell is no more than a voicemail box. So I leave my message, knowing that I will never hear from them, and try again in another few weeks.

Once, I received a response by email just to verify that my file is actually complete, so despite what my account online says, I do at least know that.

What have people done to get a hold of them? Am I wasting my time? I'm SO not impressed as of now.+pissed+
 
Has anybody else gotten billing invoices stating they have a credit owed to them? I have now received two from NSU that there is a $750 credit on my account, which doesn't make sense. I didn't call for the first one, because I heard that a lot of people received it and it wasn't a big deal. Now I'm a bit confused though. Any thoughts?

If you paid the deposit, then you would have a credit on your account. This is a confirmation both to you and the school that you paid and are securing a spot in the incoming class. If you didn't pay the deposit...then I'm not quite sure what is going on.
 
Yeah, I called and figured it out. Thanks. I guess I should have realized it was just to show I paid my deposit, but I was worried.
 
I know a great realtor that also works with rentals. He helped us get into a place that we love and is close to campus. Let me know and I can get you his information.
 
I interviewed 1-22 and I have to say that this school is awesome. My only concern is how many spots are left at NSU-COM. I have been accepted to another school already and my deposit is due monday ($2000-You may be able to the guess the school), but I would definately choose NSU-COM over that school anyday. I'm stuck between a rock and a hardplace at this point, and while I don't want to just go to any school that accepts me, I don't want to lose the opportunity for this cycle. Thanks a lot.

This situation was specifically mentioned as a legitimate reason to call (but it was mentioned at another school). I'd go ahead and get on the phone tomorrow, see if you can scare up some info, and note that Rachel is not in the office, so just start by calling the dean's office. You know, I'm sure, that the committee decided on your interview group yesterday, and then the dean decides by the following Wednesday, so you would effectively be asking the dean to hurry up his yay/nay on a committee decision that has already been made.

According to the USNews numbers for Fall '05, Nova extended 445 acceptances to acquire 236 students. I would also like to point out that it's still January. If you're worrying that you'd have been accepted but they ran out of spots, I think you should worry about something else.

Well I am sure that one of those spots remaining is on hold for me since I just sent my secondary in two minutes ago.......I can just picture the more adcom member that was put on 24 hour "Laura' watch breathing a sign of relief as my secondary came arcross the world wide web and sounding the "laura sirens'

The whole school just breathed a sigh of relief! The dean's handlebar moustache turned upwards again! The fountains sprang back into life!

I got an invite, like, 5 minutes after submitting, and then some people wait months, and I seriously doubt there's any rhyme or reason to it. NSU quite possibly has the most random admissions office. Just focus on the rec center.:laugh:
