NSU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just wondering, those put on the alternate list, were you interviewed or were you at the experience day? Haven't gotten anything yet, so I'm wondering if I should expect one of these emails too soon. Thanks!

I interviewed in mid January.

Does NSU use a lecture based system or a mixture of lecture and problem based learning?

The curriculum is based mostly on didactic lectures, but I have heard that it also incorporates a little case-based learning as well. Perhaps a current student could weigh in and provide a more detailed description of the "PBL-like" parts of the NSU curriculum, because there isn't much information on the website about this.

I'm thinking it has something to do with the academic societies, but I am also curious about this and would appreciate a current student's perspective.

either way....can someone let us know once they hear that they went from alternate status to either accepted or rejected...that'll be awesome

I don't know about M2 year, but for M1 the classes are almost all lectures (plus the labs). There is one class, 2 hours/week, that tries to bring in a little case-based learning - usually a doctor will present a case or multiple examples of cases, and then one of the professors from our current classes will do a 20 minute presentation on the science behind the disease. For instance, I think last week we talked about osteoporosis and bacterial meningitis in the 2 hours, so we had a physiology professor talk about bone physiology and a microbiology professor talk about meningitis. It's not quite PBL because it's done as a whole class, not in small groups, and there's not much research to do on your own. (All of the doctors try to make their presentations interactive in some way, and so some will tell you to bring laptops or iPads and to look stuff up while they're lecturing). Some people think it's a waste of time; some people like the way it takes current classwork and puts it into a clinical setting.

alternate list, letter mailed March 22, email and letter received today. interviewed feb. 2. upset doesn't quite cover it. Good luck to everyone in the same boat.

I received not one, not two, but THREE alternate list letters today... talk about overkill. Hoping to get off the list soon! :xf:

I hope so. I have been on the alternate list since November. I turned in my Letter of Intent, updated extracurriculars. I am also enrolled in their MIBA program. I really want to go here. Anybody know if anybody was rejected from the alternate list ?

I too have been on the waitlist since Nov, and haven't heard anything back yet🙁

My guess is that they try to meet once a month. But I doubt many people know exactly when. Their usual response is "we have not set a specific date yet."

Writing a letter too soon can make you look desperate. I would hold off for a week or two before sending one.

Hey folks,
Sorry you haven't gotten the acceptance yet. I know time has passed such that this point is moot, but let me remind you that you're not trying to date Nova. You're trying to convince them that this is the place you want to be, not play hard to get while on a wait list.

I went to a talk by a Nova grad (who is now moving high up the ranks at Jackson Memorial, a big mostly-UM hospital down here) who said he'd been rejected Nova his first year applying. Then rejected his 2nd year applying, called, "read the dean the riot act about how Nova was the place for him" and he knew he'd been rejected on a technical problem w/his application. Two weeks late he got a letter that he was on the wait list. He called again, yada yada yada, and now is a proud NSU grad.

His story may be a unique one (not sure it's ever been replicated), but if you love Nova, make that clear as day, and if you know someone here, tell them to vouch for you. Many of us know the faculty very well already, including those doing much of the interviewing.

Good luck, and hopefully we'll see y'all in the fall! There were kids that got in the week before classes started, so don't lose hope!

When is the first day of classes, and what things do I need to do by then? I feel like I am so out of the loop! Thanks! 🙂

Join the Facebook Group for accepted applicants. There has a lot of activity from current students and incoming M1s. Sorry, I don't have the link right now. It's somewhere in this forum.

I sent my LOI last week. Would it help to send current course grades to the committee? I am also unsure if NSU has my updated transcript (so I will be calling about that tomorrow).

My stats:

3.6 overall GPA, over 3.0 science GPA (not sure of an exact number right now), taking Calculus III right now, Leadership Studies certificate, graduated from leadership program, currently in Honors college at UCF
150 hours of volunteering at hospital, 40 hours of shadowing, tutoring, mentoring (one month - but still keep in touch with my protege), summer camp counselor for 6 years, volunteer TA for human anatomy

okay i got waitlisted at a few schools and i am mixing up who said what....but has NSU-COM said anything about when the people on the waitlist should be hearing something or no?....I am only asking because one school said that the 23rd letters would be sent out and i cant remember if it was NSU or not....thanks

You got the waitlist letter, right? Apparently it is "random" but I think it is random in the sense of there not being a ranked list so files will be reviewed periodically. I'm pretty sure the class if filled at the moment so people on the waitlist won't hear anything until after people start vacating their spots.

What do mean by letters being sent out on the 23rd? What type of letters are these that you speak of?

Hopefully we hear good news soon :xf: Good luck!

Okay, so apparently that was said from another school and not NSU....thanks for the clarification....i just want a darn letter that says no more waitlist darnit lol....good luck to all the others in my lovely waitlist boat.

I am in the same boat as you, and I have been anxious ever since.
I am planning on taking two courses this summer (including redoing one I got a C in). Both are science courses: molec bio I and hemostasis. Does anyone think that is a good idea? My MCAT score is okay, so I want to try to take more classes while I can. (I am graduating May 3, so these courses are post-graduation and would end June 22.)

Also in the same boat. Good luck in your summer courses!

Thanks!
I just checked the Facebook page for the Class of 2016 and saw it had 209 members. I sent an LOI to this school a few weeks ago. I want to call to see when the admissions committee is meeting again. (I would call and ask about my status, but I may not get an answer to that question, because the school doesn't rank their waitlisted applicants.)

Thanks!

Just so you know, there are a lot of current med students in the Facebook group (probably close to half of the group members). Who knows how many offers they have made at this point. There will probably be significant wait list movement around May 15 as well. Don't give up hope yet!

Hey guys...i was hoping to hear that they will be letting some of us know soon that we have (or have not) been moving around in the wait list since the deposit was due but was told by a lady in the admissions office that the only thing she can tell me is it is just a waiting game until the first day of classes....but i am also on the wait list so all of us need to keep out chins up...

oh and if anyone hears anything....PLEASE let us know

thanks

I've heard from an advisor that the most movement from the wait list is between May 15th and June 15th and then it slows down, but people still get pulled off all the way up until the first day. Hope this puts some people's nerves at ease.

Has nobody heard anything yet?....i find that hard to believe....from what i am noticing other schools are starting to let some people know....

Not a peep over here. I don't find that hard to believe at all considering the allopathic deadline is soon approaching. At any rate, it doesn't matter what others schools are doing. The applicant pool is not the same at each school. Keep your chin up.

On a side note: anyone else get an email recently for interest in the Biomedical Informatics Program?

I heard they have no availability at the moment and won't be reviewing alternates until early June. 🙁

Neurolax - that makes sense considering i believe the allo school's deadline is may 15....thatll give them a couple of weeks to look over some things and then let some ppl know.....

either way....if anyone hears anything, please let us know

I've never seen that address before. You mean the email for HPD Admissions? It's [email protected]

What are you trying to send?

That's the address I got off of 2013 CIB. I just need to ask a few questions in regards to taking pre-reqs as a pass/fail grading system, along with other few questions about late MCAT...

If you want an answer quickly, you could always call Admissions. They've always been nice to me.

good to know... did admissions straight up tell you that? they have been very vague with me...
