Number of interviews to match

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Damn.

Were I you, I would simply ask the question: How many interviews does the average ENT applicant get?

Then I would realize that "average" means there are interviewees with more and interviewees with less, and so technically, literally, and specifically, he's right, of course.

If you're interviewing this year, just rank and wait, and if you still have interviews to go, good luck. If you're interviewing next year, work on your application and try to get as many interviews as possible. If you're competative, you'll rank - or you won't. That's the Tao of Poop.

Thanks catalyst. I don't know which category I fit in. I received interviews at almost 50% of the programs I applied to, and I will end up going to 10 interviews (10 out of 11 invites). I know 10 programs is not a 100% gaurantee, but I think that considering the perecentage of interview offers I got, I should be at good odds. What do you guys think? And yes I know that in some cases you just need one interview to match 🙂=

you seriously only applied to 20 programs?

I certainly hope that works out for you. Most folks are a little more aggressive with the application process. But, if you wouldn't be happy somewhere, no reason to interview there. Good luck!

I am geographically limited, which is the reason why I did not apply to >50 programs like many of my co-applicants. I'll see how things turn out soon.

I acutally applied to 23 (that's why I said almost 50% of programs). I am geographically limited, which is the reason why I did not apply to >50 programs like many of my co-applicants. I'll see how things turn out soon.

You sound like someone I know, but anyways.. I certainly did not get an interview rate of almost 50% (I'm going on 15/17) but I think you should be fine given what I've heard from program directors ("if you interview here, you'll match" and blah blah). Of course I would assume it also depends on how competitive of an applicant you are and how competitive the programs you're interviewing at are (i.e. someone who interviews at only the "top 10" programs may be more likely to get shut out)

Yes, my response was sarcastic but there to make the point. When I applied, SF Match (still early match at that point) said that 10 interviews gave a student an 80% chance of matching. That was the goal of every candidate--to get 10 or more interviews.
