I'm just curious how many interviews people think that they can/will attend.

Do you want us to count prelims/ transitionals or just EM residencies?
Yeah, I hear you... honestly, i'm having a tough time saying no to interviews... even though i'm pretty set on trying to be in California, i'm having difficulty cancelling interviews in programs that are still great, but in the northeast... and, you know, who knows? At this point I already have too many scheduled and am still waiting for 1-2 more... I'm going to have to just start cancelling - at least a few - to stay sane. Well... great problem to have though, so I'm not complaining! 🙂

i'll prolly go on 15 cause im doing couple's match, need to make sure we match together!
It could always be worse... my friend is a super-competitive applicant and he's going on 20 rads and 10 prelim interviews!
I'll probably end up with 10-13 when all is said and done.
I cannot even imagine how much more stressful that would be. Hopefully s/he is in a match that is not super competitive!
Honestly, it has worked out better than we ever thought. Right now we have about 14 places together. Some of those places we are really really excited about. Other places we are like ok we got them together, so let's plan on going unless we hear from a place that is on our 'top list.' I have emailed a few PD's at the EM program which she got a respective anesthesiology interview at (and vice versa) and so far its worked out pretty well. At this point, I feel fairly confident we will match together (hopefully at our #1 😉)

Glad to hear everything's going so well, dude.
OK. This is out of control. I have to cancel a couple...
Dude, I'm in the same boat. Just hit 18 today, I can't even afford to go to this many. I need to get over my fear of closing doors with cancelling interviews, 10 should be enough.
That is exactly it for me...I'm afraid of closing doors. What if the one(s) I cancel is the one that would rank me high enough to match? Still, I cannot afford to go to all of these. Plus I feel so guilty about canceling. It feels like I have to break up with someone or something. I'm a spaz.
I know what you mean... I felt the same way. However.....exactly..i just cant send out those emails🙁 although i already did to two of the programs....im sitting at 21/27 ( 6 pending invites, 2 complete interviews, 2 withdrawn/cancelled) i have a few programs that i probably wont go to ( like pitt, NYHQ, christiana) but i just cant pull the trigger yes until my top 10 places gimme interviews 🙁
out of my top 10 list....im at like 7/10 ( pending NYU, SLR, and Yale)
i feel bad..but at the same time..if we dont cancel, someone wont get that interview spot! thats not nice hehe
I know what you mean... I felt the same way. However.....
What if I had an interview @ NYU but was keeping it around as a security blanket when I knew I wouldn't go there. On the flipside, you are anxiously awaiting an invite, heart NYU and would donate a testicle to interview there (figuratively speaking 😀). I end up sitting on mine, the interview date approaches and I either go knowing I won't rank them or cancel at the last minute, when they could have invited you to come but now it's too late. Sucks. Maybe some bad karma too, who knows.
Makes me feel crappy just thinking about it, and I hate throwin people under the bus. Now I have no prob turning down or canceling. I hate when I give myself a guilt trip that's deserved, but I think it's the right thing to do. Sometimes you just gotta pull the trigger 😉
*giggle* 😀i know....but i havent scheduled just sitting on them..ya just its same, i know. im gonna do it real soon..im gonna set a deadline!
but u know ..i prolly would give up one testicle and a kidney if i could go to NYU! you only need one🙂 of each.
I wonder what are the odds of someone with an average app going on 10+ interviews at top programs and then not matching? Say someone has a very average app (maybe with a semi-red flag like a low step one or failed a class), but whose app is still enough to squeak in for an interview at good programs.. said person interviews at all of these programs (and cancels other 'lower' programs thinking they are ok with 10 or 12 interviews), but because they are on the lower tier of applicants (ie: not a superstar), ends up too far down on the match list at each of these programs to match there... and ends up scrambling (this is kind of like the anecdotal med student who manages to pass all of their classes and ends up in the lowest quartile of students)
I don't think you need to worry about it. The whole idea of "top programs" in EM is kind of false. There seems to be great variety in where people want. See the #1 program poll/thread.
That IS what I worry about though. Still, if one were to keep some programs in which one thought he or she would be more competitive, if ranked like #12, a match would be unlikely there anyway. Rumor has it application numbers are "way up" this year.
Ugh. I just want an envelope on Match Day, rather than a phone call a few days before...
If you're up to 16 interviews, I don't think there's much danger of you needing to scramble. If you're competitive enough to land that many this quickly, you're certainly competitive enough to match.
Thank you for the vote of confidence. I appreciate it. I sho hope you are right. I think things will go well, but I never count on anything until it actually happens. It will be so cool to have a job and know where I'm going in a few months. 🙂
Good luck to everyone.![]()
No problem, now send that good mojo back my way. I'm only at 6/43, with 3 rejections. Not sure what the rest of the programs are waiting for, but I feel like I can make a good enough impression to match at one of my top three.
I have a feeling that December 1st will be the "certain date" for most programs. That's just my intuition.Well, I don't know about the mojo, as that brings up some ugly Austin Power images, but I WILL send good thoughts your way. I hope you get a bunch of invitations this week! 🙂
It would be nice if programs would give some feedback by a certain date, I agree.
