It depends on how competitive you are. I had slightly above average stats for an ophtho candidate and applied in the 50's which ended up being too many. You can only go to so many interviews and the application fees are very expensive. Then again, I ended up matching high on my list to a program that I probably wouldn't have applied to if I hadn't decided to apply so broadly. You never know which programs you are going to like until you get to the interview.
when I applied a few years back, 40 seemed like an average number to apply to and 10 interviews was the goal. Rough estimates depending on your application/competetiveness.
