number of programs to apply to?

hey all

what's the average number of programs that people usually apply to. I know it depends on how competitive of an applicant you are..but on average..is it 10-15? 25-30? Just a ballpark figure. Thanks!

Im applying to 20 and interviewing at (hopefully) 10-12.

I'm thinking about 25 and if all goes well 10 - 15 interviews. No idea how I will fit all that in with prelim interviews too...much less the cost!

Do programs have any clue how many places you have applied to? Can they ask you how many, and to where?

I'm applying to 17 - most of them are categorical. I'm applying only to 4 prelims in places where I have a free place to live! I don't think the programs you apply to automatically know where you have applied. Someone might ask you though - I have certainly heard of that.
