Whats up everybody, im new here and i'm glad to be among the fine folks at SDN as we discuss our futures in medicine and health care.

my question is this: do admissions at osteopathic med schools care how many TOTAL retakes of classes you've done?

I'm not talking about retaking chemistry 3 times, but I mean patching up your sci and overall GPA by retaking classes (only once)

example:
yr1

Bio 1 = B
Bio 2 = C
Chem 1 = C
Chem 2 = B

retake

All A's

No, I doubt they'd care. Especially since you've gotten As in the retakes it shows that you worked hard to improve your application.

Ditto - They like to see that you really pushed yourself to do better. I had a couple of retakes on my transcript, and it wasn't a problem anywhere.

I graduated from undergrad. in 1982 with a B.S. in Biology. I did not apply to go to medical school then because I made a C in Organic Chemistry I and II.

Three years ago, I decided to go to medical school. I re-took EVERY required pre-med course (two semesters each of general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology and physics) because of the passage of time. I made all A grades except for one B in Physics II.

I took the MCAT in August. I was accepted this week. Having repeated every required course certainly helped me. I had to prove that my brain still worked and that I could succeed in medical school. It worked. Good luck to you.

That's a very encouraging story, thank you!

I actually called a D.O. school and asked about this. They told me they would rather see a steady improvement in retakes, not perfection.

AACOMAS is a lot more forgiving than AMCAS when it comes to retakes, they take the highest grade when calculating your GPA. AMCAS averages all the attempts you took.

I believe the OP knows that, and was just wanting to know if there is a certain limit to the amount of retakes that someone can take without hurting their chances at DO schools.

I had 6 retakes, though none were science. It didn't hurt me, and it was never specifically brought up during interviews.

I believe it's the most recent retake that counts, but I may be wrong.

Sorry to bring this thread back up from the dead but I had a similar question but regarding retaking ONE class:
I ended up retaking a chemistry course during undergrad but I didnt do significantly better (specifically, F to a D). 3 years later, now, I'm wondering if I should retake the course to show that I understand the subject matter. Would it make a difference or should I just move on?

I would retake the course and focus as much possible time on it as you can. What kind of Chemistry course is it? You also might want to get a tutor, review book, or something like that this time around.

Good luck buddy

Was it a pre-req? If so, I think you need a C for it to count at most schools.

I am in the process of retaking a ton of classes (6 now, 10 total undergrad classes). I called at least half a dozen DO schools.

approx 80% said number of retakes is insignificant.

one (I think Nova?) said they dont even look at the grades, just the GPA given to them by AACOMAS.

approx 20% said its applicant-by-applicant and unfair to make generalizations, but the final sGPA and cGPA reported is the most important element of overall undergraduate work.

-please keep in mind I don't know the credibility of whoever I spoke to at these schools

for the record DMU does not like to see more than 2 or 3 retakes. i am sure they may accept more but this is what they told me when i asked them about it.
