Nutritional Medicine Programs?

Hi everyone. I have just recently decided that I would like to become a physician. I am, however, thinking about specializing in nutritional medicine rather than conventional medicine. The reason that I want to do this is because I am a huge fan of orthomolecular and nutritional medicine. I believe that many diseases can be treated and cured by providing the body with the proper essential nutrients that it may be lacking in. This is something that I am very passionate about but my question is, does anyone know if there are any medical schools that place a special emphasis on this type of medicine or if there are a lot of residencies available for this particular specialty. What programs, if any, do you suggest I look in to. Thanks in advance.🙂

How about becoming a clinical (certified) nutritionist?

Thanks for the links. Yeah I have thought about becoming a health counselor or dietician/nutritionist. The only thing is that becoming a doctor would seem a lot more fulfilling to me. Maybe I should reconsider and think about becoming a clinical nutritionist instead of a doctor since nutrition is something that I love so much.

Talk to those who do this type of work to find out what you can do and what you need to do what you want.

There really aren't any medical specialties that focus exclusively on nutrition. It's something that various specialties might encounter (some more regularly than others).

You'll learn to educate your patients on the basics, but if a patient is having specific and significant difficulties, you generally refer them to a certified nutritionist as you would with other specialists.

You might want to check the specifics, but I don't think there are any requirements to being a nutritionist, only a dietician.

You could go to medical school, specialize in anything, and open a side practice pushing supplements on people (joke - I assume you will practice ethically).

The field of medicine is very diverse. I'm pretty sure there is one physician who started a company making safe sex toys, another physician who pushes non-FDA approved diet pills, a third physician writes books about "Why Men Have Nipples".

You can do a preventive medicine residency with an emphasis on clinical nutrition or "exercise and nutrition sciences." You can even do an emphasis in health behavior modification, which will surely go in depth on the role of nutrition in the prevention of disease.

That was an idiotic book that could have been written by a 3rd grader with Downs Syndrome.

His medical sources were essentially a collection of "funny health studies I read about in the New York Times".

It was crap. And it made him a million bucks.

The OP will learn how the body works as s/he advances in his/her education.

Being a clinical nutritionist, you wold be helping patients with metabolic disorders, those who need to be put on a diet, so forth and so forth. You basically give them guidelines to follow and try to educate the patient why and how.

There are options beyond medicine. For example, I was contacted two weeks ago by a person that wants to start a new business testing peoples genetic makeup so a person can eat the right foods to lose weight, gain weight, increase athletic performance, and so forth.

Just talk to the people who do this type of work. There is plenty that you can do as a career in nutrition. For example, find out what if soy or chocalote milk works better for recovery after a workout in the weight room.
