Anyone have any idea as to whether or not NY anesthesiology programs are receptive to IMG's or not? I'm interested in Mt. Sinai, any comments? What about NJ? I was always under the impression these states were quite receptive. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, does anyone know what percentage of the programs IMG's constitute overall?

The programs in Manhattan are, on the whole, not IMG friendly. The ones in the boroughs (i.e., Brooklyn and the Bronx) and those outside NYC (e.g., Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, Albany) generally are. NJ is hit-or-miss depending on the program.

Mt. Sinai, a Manhattan program, is typically not very IMG friendly in that they get enough quality U.S. students to fill their program. They currently only have a couple of IMGs (one Ross grad and one Sackler grad that I definitely know of) and a smattering of DOs.

Your best bet, if you really want to be in Manhattan, is probably St. Lukes-Roosevelt program, typically the most IMG friendly of the Manhattan programs. Cornell, Columbia, St. Vincent's, and NYU are pretty much not even an option unless you are a superstud/studette or are heavily connected to either program.

Also, you can look on the AMA FREIDA website for general statistics for Anesthesiology residency, including percent of IMGs (here): http://www.ama-assn.org/vapp/freida/spcstsc/0,1238,040,00.html

Do you think doing a rotation there would help or hurt my chances? I've heard from some people that you can actually hurt your application if you do a rotation at your #1 cuz then they get to see all your shortcomings up close. What do you think?

Unless you are a complete and utter peanut, doing a rotation wont hurt you. Even the guy who rotated at my program last year who I evaluated as "a complete and utter peanut" wound up matching here. Luckily for him his motivation made up for his lack of technical skills and social graces. Nobody expects and MS4 to floats swans or perform cardiac anesthesia, we just want you to show up and show us that you want it.

No, I'm definetly not a "peanut", but I still worry. I just have no idea how things work in American hospitals and I don't wanna show up and look like a dumba**, that's all. Like with us, we pretty much do h & p's and then present it to the attending. What do you guys do?

If you want a gerat NY program outside of Manhattan, check out U of Rochester. FMG friendly (2+/- out of 14 per class), great clinical load = loads of everything especially hearts (2/3 off-pump)/liver/regional. Night float (only overnight are Burn unit/micu/sicu). Moonlighling @65/hr, pays license, 4 weeks off/yr + $1000 educaional allowence spent on conferences if you want, teaching is paramount = lot's of teaching, new residents lounge being built as we speak, lots of cool anesthesia gadgets to play with, New OR's/ICU's, strong comeraderie Btw/ the residents.
You can do all 4 years at UofR: CBY= consults for 4 months (card, nephro, neuro, pulmonary)= 👍 , 1 med ward month= 👍 +1ER, 1Peds, 2Srg, MiCU, SICU, and 2 anesthesia. I think this is a sweet schedule for someone going into gas + I don't have to move in another year. Dr. Lustik, the PD is very, very friendly and is a huge resident advocate (CBY was changed this year, it used to be a lot more ward months)

Rochester has cold long winters. If you have seasonal affective disorder, it might not be for you. Me personally, I spent 4 years of my life in the Colorado rockies. Bristol mountain has the highest vertical drop between the Catskill mountains and the Colorado Rockies (+1400 if I remember right). 4 Quads, 1 highspeed quad, lots of dinky lifts and 2 huge terrain parks. Bristol is only 30 min. away from the hospital and they are open most of the winter (they just closed down last month). Toronto is a 2 hr. ferry ride. Rochester has a decent night scene with lots of cool surrounding areas ie. Niagra Falls. It's one of the cheapest places to buy houses in the NE and it is the home of Wegmans grocery stores (if you've been to one you know what I'm talking about)

I wasn't sure about rochester when i went to interview there, but upon leaving I was definately impressed. I too am an FMG and I am glad I applied to the program. After checking out 15 gas programs (FMG anxiety, which you will all feel), I ranked UofR in my top 3 and matched there. If you are FMG and are looking for a great gas education you may want to check this out. Good luck😎

Check out their website- very informative.

Thanks for the amazing insider info sevo! It's always great to hear from someone who actually has "been there, done that" so you know exactly what you're getting into. Any minus points? I'm not too concerned about the weather since I'm originally from Chicago, we get some pretty cold winters here too. The reason I'm only looking into NY/NJ programs is b/c that's where my fiance is from and I wanna move out there to be closer to him. Do you have any idea how far Rochester is from New City? Thanks again for the scoop, it's a huge help! 🙂
