Hi residents!

Please provide any insights/advice! I've accepted downstate but have recently been accepted to upstate off of the hp waiting list. Although I was set on downstate b/c I would be closer to father and boyfriend and didn't think there would be much difference between the two SUNY's in terms of education or residency placement. But I heard differently.

I want to make the best choice for my next step, which is getting into a competitive residency program. I do not know what field I want to go into, although I'm thinking of Emergency Medicine, but its always good to prepare for the future. I heard from a downstate grad that it's easier for upstate grads to get into competitive programs because downstate students have to compete with other NYC med school students. Is there any truth to this?

If you're interested in EM, you should check out Downstate. Very different from Albany. Also, forget about "competitiveness" in relation to other students. The only person you should be motivated by is yerself. Good luck!

Downstate is actually great for EM. I'm a Downstate grad, and trust me, Kings County is the ER for outstanding training.

Your grades and scores on boards are more impt than Downstate vs. Upstate. Go where you will be happiest--that's what will help your performance the most. Good luck.

You may wanna also see what campus you'll end up at regarding going to Upstate. If you go to the Binghamton campus, you'll have a VERY small, community based hospital setting for you clinical years (although this will give you tons of one on one, resident free attention from attendings). That may influence what you see/what you choose...
