The GPRs in NYC pay between $40,000 and $50,000 a year. The residents have told me that it is possible to live on that salary for a year in NYC; you won't be living large, but it's doable. Like Tom said, there are plenty of hospitals in "scary" areas that have GPRs that don't fill every year (well, "scary" to those from the suburbs). I'll tell you right now that Montefiore Medical Center/Jacobi in the Bronx will have spots open post-match come Monday. Northshore Hospital in Long Island will definitely fill all their spots; people usually want it that bad.
While on interviews, other candidates told me that Stonybrook eliminated their AEGD due to the GME cutbacks and incorporated it into a GPR instead. Stonybrook is too far into the island for me to consider it. NYU & Columbia & Lutheran Medical Center also had AEGDs but I don't know what the status of them are anymore since the GME cutback.
But avingupta, the new law actually states that you can do an ADA-accredited AEGD or GPR in ANY state and still get licensed in NY. So you don't have to go to NYC for the GPR. Before you start asking about other cities, I'll tell you right now that I did not attend any of my three interviews for GPRs & AEGDs out in San Francisco for one reason. THey only pay between $20,000 and mid-$30,000. That is definitely not enough for SF. Rent alone is $1,000 a month; on a $20,000 salary, that leaves you with $8,000, not to mention that the salary is taxed so you really will end up with way less. And as far as GPRs in other cities go, NYC is the one with the most GPRs in it; other cities have far fewer compared to the number in NYC - like Boston only has 5 or 6 GPR/AEGD programs combined - and they have 3 dental schools in that city!
