I was just reading past threads on that new law which states if you do a GPR/AEGD in NY state, you will automatically be licensed to practice....could anyone tell me how much a GPR or AEGD gets paid in NYC, because coming out of dental school with a huge debt and on top living in NYC will be expensive, just wanted to know how much they get paid....cheers

Average pay for hospital GPR residents would be around $40K in the NYC area... With the GME funding issues I don't know if AEGD programs around here (such as at NYUCD and Stony) will still be paying their residents.

ouch...is it easy to get into GPR in NYC?? what about becoming an associate in NYC...is that hard? and how much would they average! GOtta pay off that darn debt!

Well, if you opt to take the NERB and get immediate licensing upon passing the test rather than go through PGY-1, you can probably find an associateship in the NYC area that pays between $80K to $100K pretty easily. You'll probably go through a number of 2-week trial associateships before settling on one arrangement though.

I got two trial associateships in NYC lined up already-- We'll see how it pans out!

As far as GPR program competitiveness goes, some are indeed pretty competitive... For example, it's pretty difficult to get into the one at North Shore Manhassett (nice facilities, in an affluent area, plenty of patients willing to pay for high-value procedures); that one requires a ridiculous number of things in your application. Some are not as hard because their scope is limited; for example, the one at Goldwater-Colden on Roosevelt Island treats handicapped patients exclusively and not many people want to apply to that program.

As always Tom, you're always a great help! thanks bud!

No prob.

I assume you are trying to decide which East Coast city to go to for school? 😀

Yes I am...Im pretty set on Temple, but Tufts was really good as well, and I still wouldnt mind hearing from Columbia or Buffalo...I talked to Dr. Joynt, but he told me Im still under review....I guess its a bit early still to made an absolute final decision, eh! Probalby just end up losing a few deposits!

The GPRs in NYC pay between $40,000 and $50,000 a year. The residents have told me that it is possible to live on that salary for a year in NYC; you won't be living large, but it's doable. Like Tom said, there are plenty of hospitals in "scary" areas that have GPRs that don't fill every year (well, "scary" to those from the suburbs). I'll tell you right now that Montefiore Medical Center/Jacobi in the Bronx will have spots open post-match come Monday. Northshore Hospital in Long Island will definitely fill all their spots; people usually want it that bad.

While on interviews, other candidates told me that Stonybrook eliminated their AEGD due to the GME cutbacks and incorporated it into a GPR instead. Stonybrook is too far into the island for me to consider it. NYU & Columbia & Lutheran Medical Center also had AEGDs but I don't know what the status of them are anymore since the GME cutback.

But avingupta, the new law actually states that you can do an ADA-accredited AEGD or GPR in ANY state and still get licensed in NY. So you don't have to go to NYC for the GPR. Before you start asking about other cities, I'll tell you right now that I did not attend any of my three interviews for GPRs & AEGDs out in San Francisco for one reason. THey only pay between $20,000 and mid-$30,000. That is definitely not enough for SF. Rent alone is $1,000 a month; on a $20,000 salary, that leaves you with $8,000, not to mention that the salary is taxed so you really will end up with way less. And as far as GPRs in other cities go, NYC is the one with the most GPRs in it; other cities have far fewer compared to the number in NYC - like Boston only has 5 or 6 GPR/AEGD programs combined - and they have 3 dental schools in that city!
