Nycom Competitveness

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Depends on your stats among other things. What are your stats like? As long as their average, or slightly below I would apply. NYCOM is getting more competitive. They told us class of 2010 had ~4500 applicants and a mean MCAT of 27, I believe.

Hello Im a NYCOM 2010 student. As far as getting in my GPA 3.4 and MCAT 22 were not stellar at all. Although I did have a fair amount of of volunteer and shadowing experience. As far as my interview went I couldnt tell if it went better or worse here but I was denied several other places and accepted at NYCOM.

From your experiences, how hard is NYCOM to get into (especially if you have some prior medical experience)? How competitive is it?

I got in with 3.9 and 25 MCAT. I seen many people with (25 - 29) MCAT and also (22-25) MCAT. The point is, the school seems to be looking at more than MCAT score.

I got in this cycle with a 3.4 and a 24.

Taryn Croot (if I spelled the name right) told me that school looks more than just MCAT score. She said they try to have a very diverse class with different life experiences and hobbies, she told me that they look at whole picture 🙂

I got in this cycle with a 3.62, 28 MCAT

👍👍 NYCOM students seem to be all over the place when it comes to GPA and MCAT, but almost everyone has some thing else that makes them stand out such as study abroad, cool research projects, interesting job experiences, etc.. I've heard several people on the faculty and in the administration say that NYCOM looks at the whole picture, and its absolutely true once you start talking to your fellow classmates. If your stats aren't pathetic, you're from the northeast, and you have that "it factor" apply.

I'm sitting at a 3.375 gpa and a 27 MCAT. I will be retaking it again Jan 25.

I have 200 clinical hours volunteering
~150 hours community volunteering (it's ongoing)
60 Hours of shadowing
My independent research project for my thesis
Fluency in American Sign Lanaguage
Legacy at NYCOM....

My undergrad university is very difficult when it comes to GPA and MCAT scores... and to be honest I am low for the University.... How am I sitting for NYCOM?

You are fine as is for getting in somewhere. NYIT is possible with your numbers, but apply broadly right now and you'll get in somewhere
