oooops, I stand corrected!

futuredrandwife, how did your NSU interview go? I heard they have a pretty campus. Oh yea I also learned recently that Dr. 90210 graduated from there! hahah very cool

Hmm...that might explain drwilson's and CoolHand's cases.

Be patient! Good luck, you guys! :luck:

Hahahahah are you serious??? That's pretty cool.

The campus is incredible. Check out the discussion link for NSU-COM:

I interviewed on 12/2 and just got my acceptance in the mail. It was weird getting that big envelope, felt like undergrad admissions! Good luck everyone!

wow, futuredrandwife, it is a HUGE school!! the facilities and the surrounding area is VERY impressive. I also didn't realize NOVA interviews so many people at once. Most of my interviews consisted of like 12-13 people at most. How many were there? Is the tuition and cost of living better than NYCOM?

Congrats Khb2102! Be sure to join our facebook group if you are planning to attend!

Geliebt, I heard NYCOM interviews around 300 in staters first and then start interviewing out of state applicants depending on how much seat is left. Not sure how true this is but I do know NYCOM has been known to interview in staters followed by out state applicants

Have any out of staters been interviewed here yet? Complete since 10/2 and nothing yet

I'm out of state, and I still haven't received anything either. 🙁 My application was complete in July! I don't think my stats are holding me back... I've been accepted to a handful of other schools. I'm hoping they just still haven't asked anyone from out of state! Please post if you hear from NYCOM, and I'll do the same! Good luck!

Wow, they got back to you that quickly? In about a week?

What the heck; that's too random!

Congrats on your acceptance!

Yeahhh those pictures were from a different interview group but my interview group was HUGE. There were about 20 people there yesterday!!!

The tuition for this coming year for OOS students is around $37,000 (not including health insurance and some other fees) and the average cost for a one bedroom apartment is around $1000 I believe. But yes, tuition is definitely more reasonable than NYCOM.

Yeah, I am from MD and will be interviewing Jan 22nd. But for most out of state'rs they dont start interviewing til much later. So dont worry too much about it!👍

Also congrats to all those who got in!!!!!

Don't worry about this too much... When I interviewed at Nova yesterday, I was told that it was still early in the interview process, and they started interviewing in early September. NYCOM did not start interviewing until early November so January 27th is still definitely early enough to have a good shot at getting in, especially since you're in-state. They interview through April so you're in a good spot. 🙂

drwilson, did you interview at Nova yesterday?? I didn't meet you!!! There were so many people there lol.
Yes I did. And I am in love with the school. I think it's my top choice now. Which one were you?

I know! I was shocked it was so fast. The letter was dated 12/5 - I guess I just was lucky enough to interview right before the adcom met?

Oh my gosh I loved him. AND his moustache! 😉 But seriously, he is the coolest guy and so down to Earth.

Hmmmm I was wearing a black suit with white shirt, my hair was dark and curly, half up/half down, I said I was from Long Island and went to Hofstra (biopsych), and I mentioned to a few people that I was engaged.

bingo. it's a crap chute.

How long do we have to pay the deposit?? It looks like it says on the acceptance packet that we have until Jan. 30th but that seems like a very long time for a DO school.

futuredrandwife,
If you get into Nova, which school will you take? Nova or NYCOM? I am waiting to hear from Nova too and may have to make the same decision.

i was thinking the same thing but I think we have until then! 🙂

futuredrandwife,

I believe I would choose Nova over NYCOM. The grounds are breathtaking, the weather is awesome, the facilities are new and up to date, and the overall feel that I got from Nova was better than what I got from NYCOM. When I went on my interview at NYCOM, I felt it was a bit disorganized. And as silly as it may sound, the fact that we were brought into a conference room that was fairly dim, and that they used a dirty whiteboard to write their names on, was a bit of a turn-off when compared with Nova. We were brought into a gorgeous conference room with a wood table and were shown a video presentation of the school. As nitpicky as this all may sound, I don't think it is. When I walked around Nova, I felt like I was walking through a really nice, beautiful medical school. I didn't get the same impression from NYCOM. However, when I went to NYCOM's Open House last year, it felt completely different (for the better), so who knows really. But I wouldn't be upset going to NYCOM, as it is definitely my second choice out of all the other schools. Sorry for the saga lol. Where do you think you would choose to go?? When did you interview??

I interviewed at Nova on 12/5. I plan on interviewing at LECOM-B the beginning of January. I believe the cost at LECOM is about half the cost of NYCOM. The issue at LECOM-B is the pbl only instruction. I am not sure if I would like that. So it will be a tough decision between LECOM-B, Nova, TOURO-NY (waitlist) and NYCOM (accepted).

LECOM-B is awesome. It's cheap, you receive a great education (98% pass the boards first-time), and the nearby apartment complexes are so cheap but absolutely beautiful. But, like you said, PBL only. And the school is just one single building, and contains only DO and pharm. students, so it is absolutely nothing like Nova. It is also very rural in the area, at least from what I could tell. But very peaceful and laid back. I enjoyed my experience there though; I was waitlisted. I was honest on my secondary and said I wasn't sure if PBL was right for me, so I'm not sure if that was held against me. Good luck waiting to hear from Nova - Ellen said our files were going to go to committee yesterday so I'm not sure what's going on. My webstar status has not changed yet. Good luck at LECOM-B, too, and with making your decision.

has anyone else heard back?!?! 😀
Still waiting. For those who interviewed the first couple days: they said we'd hear back by the holidays, right? You think that means we'd find out either way or just get a letter if accepted? If I don't hear anything by the 22nd or 23rd I guess I'll call saying we were told that we'd know by the holidays and just checking in...

drwilson: you hear anything yet??

Nothing yet man...but I don't really care anymore...NSU here I come!! I'll be sure to post if I do hear anything. I did hear from some people that it does not mean anything and that chances are still good. Is this your top choice?

I had an interview at Drexel on 12/8 and one at Upstate on Tuesday. I really liked NYCOM, though, and it would be awesome to stay near the city (I'm in Queens now). I'm also very interested in OMM, sooo I don't know how I'd rank them. I think if I got into Upstate I'd go there since tuition is something like $20,000 for in-state. We'll see.

I wouldn't worry. If you are getting interviewed at Drexel then you should be a shoe-in at any DO school. Just relax and wait for that acceptance.

I interviewed the 18th of November and got my acceptance letter december 11. Good luck to everyone applying and hopefully I'll see you in august.

congrats nomembername~ be sure to join our facebook group if you plan to attend

Can anyone help me in deciding between NYCOM and TOUROCOM-NY? I am sure alot of you guys from the NY area had to make that decision.

NYCOM has terrific clinical rotations and a kick ass match list (better than some MD schools) every year. The clinicals at touro are still up in the air and they have yet to graduate a class. pretty easy decision if you ask me.

Definitely agree with the last post...like it's a no brainer. Plus touro is located in Harlem, one of the worst neighborhoods in the country.

But there is a huge difference in price: TouroCOM-NY about $33,000 for tuition and fees and for the class of 2012, this is the four year tuition projection for NYCOM WITHOUT living expenses/board (does include health insurance):

Yr one: $48,183
Yr two: $50,457
Yr three: $53,584
Yr four: $57,813

I would go with NYCOM as well. Yes, NYCOM is much more expensive than TOURO-NY, but you can't beat their rotation sites as well as their prestigious alumni network. NYCOM has been producing physicians for over 30 years, there are many alumni and therefore many opportunities for networking than TOURO-NY. I would go to the school that would give me the best opportunity to match into a competitive residency, and in this case it would be NYCOM. Getting into a good residency can make you that much more competitive to obtaining a specialty of your choice if you choose. Even though the cost difference is large, I am willing to pay more for an established and proven education. Just my two cents

Please read my reply in the Touro-NY thread. This is becoming a duplicate thread. 😏

I'm not sure where they got those figures in the handout, but these are the numbers in the student handbook:

TUITION AND FEES
ACADEMIC YEAR 2008‐2009
Class of
2012
First Year
Tuition 39,895.00
Student Activity Fee 250.00
Lab Fee 125.00
New Technology Fee 250.00
Simulated Patient Lab Fee 500.00
Health Care Fee 100.00 100.00
Life/Disability Insurance 105.00
(variable/annually)
Graduation Fee ‐0‐
Totals $41,225.00

That's total without room/board. With room and board figure you add about $20-25,000. Also, figure on about 2k if you buy textbooks. So you're looking at ~69k for 1st yr attendance.

For comparison, this is Touro's cost:

COM 2011 COM 2012
Tuition $31,500 $31,500
Instructional Material $375 $375
Disability Insurance $100 $100
Student Body Fee $200 $200
Basic Science Instrument $100 $100
Laboratory $150 $150
Library $200 $200
Tuition & Fees $32,625 $32,625
Books/Supplies/Medical Equipment/Laptop* $3,650 $6,696
Room/Board $18,540 $18,540
Transportation $2,222 $2,222
Personal $4,204 $4,204
Step 1 COMLELEX $465 N/A
Step 2 USMLE $480 N/A
Test Prep $3,500 N/A
Totals $65,686 $63,526

As you can see, the total at touro is ~63k. It's not terribly cheaper than NYCOM's total package imho. However, it does look like Touro adds some stuff in their breakdown, such as the cost of the board exams.

maybe sombody has advice for me; NYCOM or UMDNJ-SOM? (i am a ny resident btw)

jp104 - They were in the financial aid handout we received at the interview. I'm just assuming their info is accurate.

As for NYCOM v. TOUROCOM-NY, I agree with the last several posts. Furthermore, although the tuition is very high at NYCOM, the cost of living in the city (if you go to Touro) is going to be ridiculousloy high, so it will probably average out.

Yeah the numbers are accurate, it's just that the NYCOM values from the hand out includes stuff that the touro numbers do not. So when someone compares 33k (T-NY) vs 48k (NYCOM) it's not completely apples to apples 🙂

Yeahhh that makes sense 👍. And like I was saying, while living expenses are high on LI, they're even worse in the city, and for crappier conditions. So I think it evens out anyway. I'd choose NYCOM over TOUROCOM-NY.

The only weird thing is that in the financial aid packet, it says that those high costs do not cover living expenses, but that they cover tuition, fees and health insurance.

anybody pay the deposit yet?

It went into the mail yesterday morning. 😀

I'm still wondering about the updated transcripts we need to send to them after we graduate, though (if you haven't yet, that is). Do we send them directly to their office of admissions? Or do we send them to AACOMAS?

i think directly to admissions because they said aacomas does not send the schools a copy of the actual transcripts (i guess aacomas just uses it to calculate an official gpa?). thats what i would think.

anyone else hear anything yet?
