NYCOM Discussion Thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone else find it odd how late NYCOM gets going with the process? I mean, I wouldn't mind seeing NY in the winter time--if that's the case--but it seems counterproductive. Many good applicants will be committed before NYCOM even considers them.

NY in the winter is awesome. Winter is actually winter here, unlike Florida.

I'm glad they start late, my app won't seem so far behind compared to all of you 😀

That's my saving grace right now. It's the only one I won't be late at now. I wa shoping I wasn't late at NOVA but since they never received my signature page i guess it will be really late now. Did everyone mail theirs registered mail or something?

How many letters of rec does NYCOM need?

How many letters of rec does NYCOM need?

This is from the email they sent. I don't know if you got it or not.

* Supplemental applications will only be sent to candidates who are chosen to be interviewed.

* You may have your letters of recommendation forwarded directly to NYCOM Admissions at this time. We require either Pre-Professional Committee Recommendations or three individual Letters of Recommendation from faculty members (two must be from science faculty). Please forward them to:

New York College of Osteopathic Medicine/NYIT

How does NYCOM compare with Touro-NY... in terms of education, location, other pros/cons? I live in the South West, so I am not familiar with NY.

It's hard to compare them head to head because Touro is still brand new. As it stands now, NYCOM has been around for 30 yrs so we have a proven curriculum and reputation. However, since the vast majority of schools teach the same basic sciences material I don't think your education will lack at either. It really does matter on the student. NYCOM has a systems based curriculum and Touro has a subjects based curriculum.

NYCOM is located in Long Island which is about 40 mins by car to NYC. We have most of our clinicals on LI with quite a few spots in Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island. I don't know if Touro has secured all of their clinical rotation sites yet so you may want to clarify it with some current touro students.

Touro is located in Harlem which is in upper manhattan. Rent would probably be a lot more expensive if you decide to live in the city.

Sorry if this is so vague but it's hard to compare the two schools until Touro becomes more established. Good luck!

Touro-NV is located in a pretty good area. However, there is no campus, it is just one building.

Edit: oops, I mistook Touro-NY for Touro-NV.. nevermind this post.

This is the exact same email I got the other day. I called them right after because all my letters and info was sent to them a while ago, and the admissions lady said that it's just a general email they send to everyone. Seemed wasn't in a mood to talk either...

Soo has anyone received NYCOM's secondary yet? I know they interview late, but I haven't heard anything from them for almost a month.

Congrats to both of you!

I want one of those too! Are you also in-state with a name in the beginning of the alphabet? 😀

Thanks guys! Totally unexpected.I actually just mailed my LORs last week.Yea,im in-state.

Really? Damn they decide fast. Whats your gpa/mcat outta curiosity? NY resident?
Well I hope they didn't decide too quickly in my case as i sent my LORs awhile ago and I've heard nothing. 🙁

I'm curious to know stats on anyone receiving an invite that doesn't have MD applicants posted.

Thanks! That's it; they want high MCAT scores; that's who is getting these first invites. Mine is lower than your first; I'm still waiting for my latest results but I'm not expecting them to be any better. My gpa is higher than yours but they seem to care mostly about the MCAT. Engineeredout, that should be good for you!

I don't know about this school, but in general, a high MCAT isn't really needed if you have experience. I got a 22 on the MCAT and got accepted to a med school for next year, but I have a lot of experience since I am a medic in the Army. I'm not sure what your experience level is, but it might be enough to get you in.

I have a 29 on the MCATso I might have a chance....but I live in DC so maybe if the invite is coming via snail mail Ill get it in a couple days........

wow i remember this same thing last year... congrats guys. it looks like nycom is starting to interview a bit earlier this year. i'm looking forward to seeing everyone in their suits on interview day!! i still remember mine. time flies.

I was complete on 8/6/08, and I'm out of state. Haven't heard back from them yet either.

If by "complete" you mean they got your AACOMAS, then I was complete around the same time. My LORs were sent out at the end of August.

I was complete by AACOMAS on 8/6 and my LOR were sent on like 8/10...so around then.

They haven't announced the open house date yet, but it has been late oct to early nov in the past. It is usually posted on the homepage.

I've always seen it in November, and kept looking for it to be posted. So that is something different, then?

Thanks, similar thing happened to me on the MCAT, left me blind-sighted. Did you retake? I did and I really hope it wasn't a mistake if I did even worse. :scared: As it is it delayed my secondaries.

The statistics say retaking is shaky at best, and tends to decrease your score. HOWEVER, (that's a big contrast keyword!!! I teach kaplan too much) if you weren't prepared or had a psychological issue, you can definitely improve.

Just an FYI, I retook and went +5 on the MCAT. I felt horrible afterwards and thought I did worse. So don't go on your gut feeling. Just relax and wait! Too late to cancel now 😉

Unfortunately I don't knowwhy I blew it the first time and I don't feel confident at all about the retake. :scared::scared::scared::scared::scared::scared::scared::scared::scared::scared:

Oh and I wish I could feel horrible after my MCAT and get your score!!!!!!!

I received the interview invite and secondary app via snail mail on 10/6 and scheduled my interview for 11/11...good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back! (im in state by the way)
