NYCOM Discussion Thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
First and foremost, let me express my condolences for not getting into allopathic schools with your above average stats and thank you for your interest in using DO schools as a last chance hail mary attempt at going to medical school this cycle.

Second, the chances are not good. As mentioned, anyone applying this late with "above average stats" is pretty much viewed as an allopathic reject scrambling to get in. It is not impossible, however, to get in at this point. I know someone who applied in February and got in (3 years ago though). If you are lucky enough to get an interview, better be sure you know everything there is to know about DO schools or run the risk of being weeded out as said allopathic reject.

Good luck.

I don't know about that...my AACOMAS was released on 12/17. I'm not sure if that's the date I applied to NYCOM. While I filed primaries at 6 schools I only finished secondaries for three: AZCOM (didn't file my secondary until late January or February and got an interview invite two weeks later) CCOM(Completed 2/14 no news) and received an interview offer from NYCOM on Jan 28th.
Lol it's funny I just now today finally figured out how to check what my GPA is on AACOMAS. My cumulative is only 3.49 and science was only 3.34. So it's possible applying late!

And as for being an allopathic reject: I'd say more like being an enlightened allopathic reject. I spoke with a bunch of DO's and read the DO's by Gevitz.
I told them during my interview at Midwestern that the first time I applied I only applied allopathic b/c of something that was said at the end of the DO's where they cited a study that said only 15% of the population actually fully knows what a DO is..and I was part of that 15%. But now knowing what I know I feel it's a better career option b/c I can not only be a clinician but if I want to break away and focus on wellness and preventative medicine it gives me a better base and therefore it's a better career oppurtunity.

It's not breaking away.. it's a fundamental part of what all medical practice should be.

Hey! So I have an interview at NYCOM on Tuesday coming up. I'm originally from NY (the Westchester area) so it'll kind of be like going home even if I've been in AZ the past 8 years (GO ASU Sun Devils!).

Any interview advice for this school? I'm about to read this entire thread and am on page one. I figured I'd post this now and introduce myself and maybe by the time I'm done reading the 850 posts in this thread I'll have some replies and new friends.

My stats:
31R (10V 10 B 11PS)
GPA 3-4-3.5 or something AACOMAS. AMCAS was 3.35
Re-applicant this year having only applied MD this year.
Accepted into Ross for JAN 09 deferred it until May so I could re-apply to my state school. Doesn't look too good for my state school so I'd rather go DO than go to Ross. I only filed secondaries for three DO schools, Midwestern Arizona, Midwestern Chicago, and NYCOM. I just interviewed at Midwestern Arizona last week and might get a response tommorow! I just happen to like NYCOM's clinical curriculum more (more surgery and more teaching hospitals in the area) and am interested in their joint DO/MBA program.
ECs:
5 month full time (40+ hours/week unpaid) with an MD in pulmonary and critical care. Did primary care in his office and spent a good amount of time in the ICU.
Volunteered as an assistant teacher at a childrens hospital.
Helped a ton of people with their diets and exercise programs over the year.
NY-State EMT-B certified with some community hours.
Volunteered in Emergency Room for a semester.
Some HIV fund-raising.
Worked as a golf caddy to put myself through college.

So I'm hoping to throw some questions out there:

What is living in Westbury like? I know about the weather all too well having grown up in New Rochelle (Westchester County).
How are the clinicals for NYCOM? Other than the 4th year required preceptorship are they ward-based or preceptor based?
Are any underserved rotations required?
And is it more difficult to place into programs out west (I want to practice in Arizona) coming from NYCOM or easier?

That's what I have for now...I'm sure I'll have a million more for you guys when I finish this thread! Thank you in advance.

Your GPAs are slightly below the average for NYCOM, but your MCAT is definitely above. You have a great amount of ECs. Considering you've been given an interview, they're serious about you and the chances look good. Do you have a LOR from a DO?

The questions you have towards the end there are better suited for the current medical students. However, I don't think you would have any trouble practicing in Arizona eventually; the only slight difficulty I can foresee is that you won't have alumni/influence from NYCOM in Arizona.

As for your interview, it's relatively easy (and usually short-ish), so just relax; they won't ask any difficult questions. Good luck!

No DO letter....but I chose to not worry about that since 1/3-1/2 of the letter (which was quite long) the physician wrote for me was dedicated to my interest in health and wellness. You really would have thought the doc was a DO that specialized in preventative medicine so I think that should suffice 🙂

It usually takes around a month; be patient. 😉

Take it from Semicolon. I read this entire thread front to back last night and you definetly were rewarded for being patient.
"It's not bad news..." can be taken so many ways!

Hahaha, i remember that!

Lol I remember that too. Let's face it, you can't apply to medical school without having a splash of OCD and neuroticism. 😛

Lol, don't make fun of me! We all start out as neurotic pre-meds. 😀

Yeah, that was 3 months ago and I'm more than happy to leave all that behind. I definitely had to go through the cruel waiting period (which is made more cruel by the fact that NYCOM is so unpredictable 😛). If it matters to you, you can't do anything but worry...and a LOT was riding on this acceptance (as I'm sure is the case for plenty of others as well).

Good luck to you all. You can bet that the USPS will be either your best friend or your worst enemy in the end. 😉

Well it looks like I won't be going to my interview on Tuesday. I was accepted to AZCOM this morning!

You don't know what the cruel waiting period is until you are on the waitlist. Moreso consider yourself lucky!

Ok guys i need help. I got into NYCOM, and NSUCOM. Both schools are great. I am from Rochester NY by the way.
I did my pros and cons and both school are pretty much equal for me.

Here are my questions for NYCOMers.

I know the residency at NYCOM is great, but how many percent of students get their top choice?

Housing? I lived with housemates all through college and I can NOT do it anymore, are the single bedroom apt. reasonable in price and close enough(5 min drive)?

I am thinking of going into surgery residency, orthopedic surgery, but this can change I guess, maybe EM.

NSU or NYCOM. NSU has great weather, decent residency matches. NYCOM is close to NY and has better residencies but the weather relative to NSU is crapy..

These are my thoughts. I would appreciate any help on these.
Thanks guys..

Bil~

congrats on your acceptances~ I think you should ask yourself where you want to practice medicine. If you want to practice in the Northeast, especially NY, I would go to NYCOM since setting up "audition rotation" during your fourth year will be easier and convenient for networking through your rotations.

Unfortunately, like other parts of NY, Long Island is not a cheap place to live...especially if you want to find a single bedroom apartment. You are looking at 1150+ at the least (probably realistically 1500). A lot of students live around the glen cova area which is <10minutes from school. I heard Roslyn is pretty close <5 minutes but very expensive.

This may be a subjective way of thinking but I think having a roommate in medical school is completely different from having a roommate in college. I would think people that get accepted into medical school would generally be more responsible, hard working, and considerate of others. This probably isn't always true, but im sure you agree with me on the fact that med students will have stronger work ethics than your undergraduate colleagues! But then again, I guess hard working has nothing to do with being compatible 😛

Good luck on your decision and I hope you can join us!

Thnx Hokie06, I agree about the housemates, compared to undergrad, the types of individuals who attend med school would be much more considered.
Yeah in the end I rather practice in the northeast area but thats only because northeast is the place I know the most. How do you guys plan on finding places to live, or housemates?

If you go the NYCOM facebook page that Hokie created, I added some very useful links for finding homes/rentals in the area. Check it out, and good luck with your deicision!

Thnx ericr29, I was just actually going over those websites. But since I am not from the area, all i can do is look through maps and make sure they are close enough. Where do you guys plan on living?

It's really too early to tell. A lot of students live in Glen Cove, so you can look there and at the surrounding areas (there are plenty).

A lot of people live in apartments in Glen Cove. Many people also live in Queens and some even live in Brooklyn. It's not a bad ride from where I live in Queens, less than 30 minutes. It's also a little cheaper than most LI places. I'm not from the area either and decided on Queens because it is equally convenient for me and my fiance to get to school and work, respectively.

Enjoy your free time 'til school starts!

Ok its nice to know that Housing wont be a big issue as I thought it might.

hey everyone, just wanted to let you all know that i got accepted on march 2nd.. and i interviewed on the 10th of february. 🙂 ... the letter said that i had to reply by the 16th and give a downpayment.. do you guys know if they provide extensions for the replies?

When does NYCOM stop inviting people for interviews?

Hi guys I finally got round to withdrawing from NYCOM. It's a good school, just wanted to let waitlisters know that there's an extra spot open now (I've been there before I know how it feels)

Good luck to you all!

hi everyone....
this is probably a very common question, and i just don't want to scroll through endless replies to get the answer!
i interviewed on 3/5 and was told that i would probably hear something in 3-4 weeks. should i be looking out for a physical letter, an email, or a phone call?

My acceptance packet came in a big white evelope. They don't call or email you to tell you your status, its only via snail mail. They also don't send out rejection letters unless your waitlisted. Apparently, you know you didn't get in by not hearing anything from them 😛

They don't even send out rejection letters if you are wait-listed. Just gotta wait it out...

oh wow, what a bummer. I wonder why they don't, doesn't make sense. :-/ You would think they would at least send you an email with your status if they know applicants put in a lot of time and resources applying to their school... just out of courtesy

Has anyone heard back from the 2/24 interview yet .... they said two weeks and still no word....:scared:

PS: Do they really reject with the silent treatment ?

yea, its pretty messed up. but two weeks is too early to be worried. Give them 5-6 weeks, and if you don't hearing anything then start thinking about something... A good friend of mine heard back like a month and a half later and was told he was waitlisted. It takes them about a month to get back with you if you're in, or at least thats the general trend people have been noticing this cycle. good luck man

I interviewed on 2/24 but haven't heard back yet. I am checking my mail like a maniac. I am so nervous. 🙁

I'M INNNNNNNNN 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

Hey, I interviewed on 2/24 too, which one were you? They said 4 weeks, not 2, so don't sweat it. Also it looks like from a couple posts above someone got in after 4.5 weeks, so again, don't sweat it even if its alil after 4 weeks. They do not reject with silent treatment although I have a friend who got rejected 2.5 months after his interview.

Hi all!
I interviewed on Feb 12th (anyone else on that day?), and was accepted this past Friday the 13th! Shows that something good could can happen on Friday the 13th 😉 Just joined the facebook group..I'm so excited to join you all, and for those who are waiting, it definitely can take a little over a month to hear back, so no worries 🙂

I was the first one interviewed in the morning session. I don't think we met.

Are we suppose to be filling out the FAFSA? if so when?

You should fill it out as soon as you get your tax return (you can do it before the tax return, but it's much easier with it). Don't rush, just make sure you get it done so that it's out of the way and ready to be viewed by NYCOM. 👍

Hey guys,

I was wondering who else here are sure that they will be applying to the DPC program? I am pretty sure that I will be applying for it...

OO also if anyone knows, how do the DPC students do on their boards (both USMLE&COMLEX)? I heard that they do better, but I am not sure.
and does anyone have any info on what residencies that they go for? I mean do they specialize more than the other students?

Bil~

I dropped my application off for DPC about a month ago so I am curious to find out what the status of that is. I know Dr. Elkowitz mentioned that board scores are higher, but I don't know where to find stats on that. I also don't beleive NYCOM seperates the two curriculums when listing their match list but I could be wrong...either way good luck with getting into DPC and hopefully finding answers to your questions....

Also, has anyone who applied for DPC heard anything???

I mailed in my DPC application like 2 months ago. 😀

While the stats for DPC are impressive, I'm still very uncertain about how well it will fit my learning style. I'm planning to just give it a try and if it doesn't seem like it'll work out, off to lecture I go!

And no, I haven't heard of anything from NYCOM; I assume they haven't even started looking at the applications yet.

thanks semicolon.......

when is the deadline to fill out the FAFSA?

and are there separate interviews for the DPC program?

Whatever the deadline is, it's too late for us; fill it out soon and you'll be fine. We should be getting NYCOM's financial aid package in around June.

And no, I'm pretty sure there aren't separate interviews for DPC; your interview to get accepted was enough. 😀

anyone from the 2/24 interview group hear back yet?
