NYCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Who's brilliant idea was it to change policy mid-cylce? Of course when I apply NYCOM decides they want more money and have EVERYONE complete a secondary it seems like. 😡

I am confused (and somewhat upset) as well. I thought NYCOM only sends secondaries to those who receive interview invitation. The email I received this morning says otherwise. Oh, well. Don't let it get to you, my friend. Hopefully your interview comes (if NYCOM is your top school). Good luck 👍

Oh, by the way, I did NOT receive an interview invite. After reading over my post again, I realize I may have implied I did get invited to an interview. My bad!

I got that same e-mail too!

I don't think I'm going to send in the $60 until I get an interview invite. WTH!!! This has been the school that everyone has been able to say you don't get a secondary unless you get an interview invite. Why change it now?

Way to give me a gigantic surge of hope and then vaporize it, NYCOM.

This is very odd. I too opened my email and was very pleased to see something from NYCOM because I assumed it was an interview. I don't understand why they switched, and if it is worth it to do this secondary now???

I definitely don't think it is fair to start having applicants fill out secondaries right now. The ADCOM at NYCOM is currently inviting applicants for interviews in FEBRUARY. If they're already out that far, than the majority of the students they are interested in will be bringing the secondaries with them to the interviews. That leaves the rest of February and March to interview...does that mean that they are going to look at the secondaries for all the remaining applicants for interview spots for the last 4 weeks? That makes no sense.

For people without interviews...I would call ahead of time and ask if they will be reviewing the secondaries and using them to decide whether or not to give interviews.

I just called the admission office and it seems as though there is no need to send in supplemental applications. I asked whether it would be used to determine whether you'd be invited for an interview and the staff member responded "Interview invites are determined by the AACOMAS application." I then asked whether it would affect the decision if I did not do the supplemental application to which she replied "No, it is up to you".

So really, it seems as though this is just a way to sucker people into paying the fee. Seems very unfair. If anyone would be willing to volunteer to call the office to clarify it better, that'd be great. Didn't seem like she wanted to stay on the phone.

Fantastic, I decided to bite the bullet and submit since there was no update or mistake email. I guess I'll see what happens.

I might also due to a tiny nagging feeling... but very unhappily so if that ends up being the case. 😡

Also, did people have to send in LOR right after primaries before getting the secondary/interview invite? I couldn't find any request to.. but I just called the admin office and they said to send it in.... Gosh.

I sent mine in yesterday before this whole debacle began.

Well, then if that's the case, then there's no way I'm paying this secondary fee unless they decide to actually send me an interview invite. Thank you for clearing that up.

Really, though, at this point I'm with Droog... I'm in at Western, which I think I like better anyway. Still, it would give me an excuse to send in-the-area emails to all my other NYC schools...

If someone calls ASAP, I just switched my Nov 5th interview to a later one...hopefully someone in the area could use a closer date!

Yeah when I called a few weeks ago she quickly said only those who interview get secondary's to which I replied that it did not correspond to the initial email after my primary had been sent in which stated something like: "we are currently reconfiguring our application process and will notify you shortly of what to do." She is definitely not a people person over the phone. The whole process has been sketchy. I do not think I will continue my pursuit for this school's acceptance. I got the email this morning too, really?

No kidding! I'm on that boat too with other acceptances and losing interest. 👎 It was nice to find out now that everyone completes the secondary. I am curious about the clinical clerkships in the third year though. It says 12 wks of surgery. Electives aside, that seems like a lot more than any other school, which typically "requires" only four weeks in the third year. Any thoughts? Would this be better for people considering a surgical speciality?

12 weeks of surgery?? I thought it is usually like 8, or maybe 4. But 12 is REQUIRED? That's a new one. NYCOM in general just makes me feel uneasy. I dont know.

Yeah, I'm not sure I feel too great about that easy. 12 weeks just seems like overkill. What if you end up hating it your second week?

supposedly the secondary money is going toward some scholarship, but I think it's pretty ******ed that they would flip the script mid-cycle like this.

to the person who said they are already booked up until february, where is your information coming from? I find this to be impossible.

NYCOM changed their 3rd year schedule last year. It is now:
4 weeks - Intro to Clincal Medicine Course
10 weeks - Surgery
10 weeks - IM
5 weeks - Peds
5 weeks- FM
5 weeks- OB/GYN
5 weeks- Psyc
4 weeks - Elective

The order of Surgery, IM, FM, OB, Psych is random and you choose that during 2nd year. However, the 4 week Intro course is always at the start and the 4 week elective can only be taken as the last course in 3rd year.

You don't spend all 10 weeks in surgery doing general surgery. You rotate around in the sub specialties. Same with IM. I heard from other 3rd years, they get great exposure to alot of different fields.

It's not impossible at all. I needed to reschedule my interview from 11/5 to a later date (2/3). I called today and the lady said they are booking early Feb. She said they only do a few weeks in November... a couple of days in December (then go on break for a little over a month)...and then it is onto Feb. So it's not really all that hard to see it already being into those booking days, since they start interviewing later in the cycle as it is. :0)

i was invited the first week of october and the earliest date i could schedule for was jan 12th.....so it would make sense that by now they are into feb.

Awesome. Thanks for the info!! Def my top choice thus far.

I received that email too, although worded differently... Are they looking for money?! Well, thank god for that fee waiver!

how did you get the fee waiver for NYCOM? did you mail them a copy of your aacomas fee waiver letter?

On the supplemental, if you click "save and continue" it doesnt allow you to go back to previous pages. Does anyone know if in the "review" section you can change/edit your responses to any of the questions?

I wasn't able to go back either, luckily there were no mistakes on the review page.

The woman in the Admissions office that schedules the interviews. I was invited for an interview in the middle of September...scheduled for the middle of November. I had to reschedule my interview and when I called three weeks ago, I was lucky enough to get it rescheduled for only 5 days later because of a cancellation. She told me I was very lucky I called when I did because they were already scheduling into February.

When you reach the Review section, you will be able to EDIT!!!

For anyone interviewing this week, would you please fill out some interview feeback so the rest of us have an idea of what to expect (and what you thought of NYCOM)? Thanks 🙂

I'll do the same once I interview next week. Good Luck Everyone!!

So I spoke to the lady in admissions...she told me that its their new procedure to send out the secondaries without giving an interview...she said "you should fill it out and send it in" and "we interview up until March so just hang in there and good luck." Guess I'm biting the bullet as well

how did you get the fee waiver for NYCOM? did you mail them a copy of your aacomas fee waiver letter?

You can apply for a fee waiver in the beginning of the application cycle. The info is on the AACOMAS website. If you get it, you get to submit three primaries for three and then secondary fees are waived according to the school. It's a pretty convenient deal... seeing that I see my chances at getting an invite to NYCOM quite slim now that they're into Feb, but I don't feel comfy with not turning this secondary in. Haha. They're not getting a dime from me!

So if we already got an interview invite...should we fill out the supplemental online or bring the supplemental with us to the interview?

I got an email that said if you were given the supplimental application with the invite, just fill that out and bring it with you- you do not have to fill out the online one.

Thanks. How are you guys filling out the supplemental? I can't open it with Adobe, and typing on the form in Word messes up the format and everything. Should I hand write it?

Also, for the section where it asks you to discuss, "in the space below" your reasons for applying to NYCOM...would it be frowned upon if I attach an additional page of why I want to go to NYCOM? If not, how long should that be? Or should I just follow the directions and keep it to the space they provide, which is only three lines.

So I emailed school to ask about what the Nov 10 interview at 11 AM means. This is their response "This is to confirm your interview at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine on Tuesday, November 10 at 11:00 am." The response does not help me at all, because this is the schedule:

MORNING INTERVIEW SESSION: Available on Tuesdays only
8:45am Check in at Admissions Office
9:00-11:30 Interviews
11:30-12:00 Admissions Program
12:00-12:30 Discussion and brunch with Student Ambassadors
12:30-1:00 Campus Tour (may leave following tour)

AFTERNOON INTERVIEW SESSION: Available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
11:00am Check in at Admissions Office
11:30-12:00 Admissions Program
12:00-12:30 Discussion and brunch with Student Ambassadors
12:30-1:00 Campus Tour
1:30-4:30 Interviews (may leave following interview)

I am not sure whether 11 AM interview means that I have the morning interview session with the actual interview time at 11 AM or the afternoon interview session starting at 11 AM. Anyone please clarify what 11 AM means, is it the morning interview or the afternoon interview? Thanks.

nobody tell him. if you can't figure this out on your own, you are an idiot.

also, did everyone invited for an interview receive an e-mail confirmation with their date? i received an initial invitation inviting me, saying i had 10 days to schedule....i then scheduled for jan 12th but never got a confirmation e-mail....is this normal?

I don't think anyone received a confirmation email. I certainly haven't.

thanks...and against thethethe's suggestion lol.....in my opinion them confirming you for 11 means you are the afternoon session and your "interview/interview DAY" starts at 11....perhaps you can call and ask if you are in the morning or afternoon session?

If you are not going to help, I would like you to remain silent on the issue (your comment is very misinformed and I hope you understand); however, I do really think that I deserve the right to clarify on the issue, since the time can really be ambiguous. I don't think anyone, just from the time given, can say with certainty that it is the afternoon interview, which is what I thought but would like to confirm anyway.

the only people that know for sure are NYCOM...i know you e-mailed them and you didn't like the answer, so JUST CALL THEM

ok, ill help you out.
im 100% sure you have the afternoon interview.

I got a email confirmation today for my interview on tuesday

so I received an email for an 8am time, what time should I show up? 11?

can anyone who interviewed the 4th,5th and 6th of november tell us how the interview went? thanks!

I don't like that they don't send confirmation emails I feel like I gotta call the school just to make sure of the time and what not.

I agree, I have my interview on Jan 27th. I think it is at 11am when I need to be there. The lady was like "You have the last week of January, pick a day right now." I forgot to ask the time....she was real quick. I was like "ah, New York, I have been away from it for so long. "

Anybody know/have information about what hospital options we would have for clinical clerkships 3rd and 4rth years? Also are there any oppportunities with like a student clinic? What about mission work or something overseas? There are 300 students in a class? I imagine everyone commutes...and there is not much interaction amongst the students. NYCOM is across the street from where I did my undergrad at LIU CW POST.

12 weeks of surgery. Wow that sounds intense....but also 12 weeks of IM.

Anyone know the percentage of NYCOM grads that specialize versus going into family medicine? Are some schools just better at preparing students for specialization.....is NYCOM one of those schools?

I have an interview at DCOM comming up next week.....so I am trying to compare and contrast with NYCOM. I am originally from NY......so it would be sorta nice to come back.

with the online secondary, is there a submit button or is it automatically submitted once you paid? After you pay it goes to paypal, not back to their app so am I supposed to assume it was submitted as there is no confirmation or anything. Overall the application process for this school seems pretty horribly done.

Sorry I can't answer more of your questions, but I don't think there are any mission trips.

Of those who interviewed last week, could you provide us some feedback as to how it went?

Hey, you can find the hospital affiliations for 3rd and 4th year on pages 11-14 of the "NYCOM Course Catalog 2009-2011" found here: http://iris.nyit.edu/nycom/Students_Resources.htm

It's a pretty impressive list, with 46 hospitals listed. I think NYCOM does a good job preparing students for specialization, as the DO I shadowed was a NYCOM grad in Orthopedic Surgery and spoke highly of the school.
