It's early, but what the f* -

I like NYCOM's rep, great clinical associations and pass rates.
Negatives thus far are no notes/scribe service (I've been too dependent on this) and from the way the admission office responds the admin. seems a bit disjointed or totally disinterested in students.

Anyone have info. on stats for those accepted in state, and out? There's many floating around?

Also, what's the earliest interview date of the year?

NYCOM doesn't like to publicize their GPA or MCAT averages, thus most of them are "through the SDN grapevine". It's tough to pinpoint. From what I read:

Avg. Accepted MCAT: 24-27
Avg. Accepted GPA: 3.1-3.5

Obviously, huge standard deviation.

Out of Staters seem to usually have higher #'s.
As for interviews, it seems NYCOM takes a good majority of the people they interview. I read as high as 85-90% but that seems like a slight exaggeration - if you score an interview Think Big!!

Nov. is the earliest interview dates.

Any other NYCOM hopefuls for this application period - chime in 👍

New to the boards but NY resident hoping for NYCOM!!!

I agree, NYCOM does have great clinical sites which is why it is one of my top choices as well. I have had a great experience with the admissions staff so far...they have offered quite a bit of information and are willing to answer any questions you may have. The average stats appear to be 27MCAT 3.5gpa. The interview invites go out in early October for November.

Not a big deal at all but just wanted to let you know I received an interview invite in early to mid September for early November. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

Hey! Congrats on the acceptance. When did you have your app submitted and LOR's mailed out? How long did it take aacom to reach NYCOM after you hit the apply button?

I submitted my primaries mid May and I'm pretty sure everything was verified by the middle of June. I don't think anyone received an interview invite before September so i'm guessing as long as your primaries are in by then, than you're good to go. I did notice that the majority of the invites were for NYS residents early on (but my sample is only as big as SDN members), and in my group only 1 person was from OOS (NJ). If you are instate and submit by August you should have a great shot!

Hey guys! good luck on your Medical School admission endeavors!
@ToDo- NYCOM gives you all of the class notes and powerpoints printed before the class begins. They also have streaming video of the lectures that you can access and watch at any time.

The Average admission Standards for the class of 2013 was a MCAT of 29.5, and a GPA of 3.6. The class of 2014 stats are not out yet but are expected to be equivalent or higher. For the class of 2015, the standards will be at this level or higher as well...

Good Luck and is you have any questions students and alumni are on SDN to answer them...

Hey! thanks for the info. If if submit by August, do you think I will have a good shot at getting a September (or earliest) invite?
Also, I want to send in my primary app asap but I want to volunteer more this month. Can I update the primary application when I want to update volunteer hours (without hurting my application)?
When do you submit the secondary app?

Whoa. Those are some pretty high stats compared to the average. My 3.69 nonscience, 3.59 science and 26Q doesn't look too decent anymore...what do you guys think?:scared:

In general, NYCOM looks for a minimum MCAT of 27 (of course there are exceptions and this isn't a strict cutoff), but that was their general "guideline" for the last application cycle.

It depends on if you're talking about submitting your app to AACOMAS in August or having it verified by then. I would try to have it verified by then for the best results, but plenty of people verified after and still received early invites. For the volunteer hours, you can always list upcoming volunteer or always put starting date to present, so that you won't have to wait. If you are seriously lacking in volunteer, maybe wait, but I don't think it will kill your chances. Are you instate? Because it will help you a lot!

As for the stats - i'm sure those listed above are the truth, but I just wanted to let you know mine: sGPA: 3.39, nsGPA: 3.72, cGPA: 3.54, MCAT: 24Q (NYS resident)

I did 1 year of research, an internship in a hospital for 6 weeks full time one summer, shadowed a D.O. for a total of 3 days, (did other shadowing my entire internship...but the D.O wrote my rec letter), and did ~1000 community service/volunteer/club hours during my 4 years of school. I also worked ~15 hr/week. I don't think my hours are anything spectacular, but an application is definitely looked at overall. I think you have great stats for NYCOM and if you're instate, you will definitely get an interview.

CIB says NYCOM requires 3 rec letters from professors. Anyone know if I can get by with only 2?

holla!
My Gpa is Sub 3.0 🙁 but upward trend from a 1.6 freshman year-_- to a 3.7 this year as a Junior from Stony Brook University
My extra Cs are decent (i think)
a year of independent research on" Advance Therapeutic Space"
300+ Hospital Hours
Medical Assistant in a very established MD Office
I'm Shadowing a D.O
and I been working full time for that past 2 years paying my own tuition through college...
I'm an active member in 2 Student organizations
and part of a business fraternity

All to make up for what happened to me...

I know my gpa is low and my personal statement addresses one of the most unusual undergraduate careers experienced

I'm taking the MCAT this thursday...
AAMC 8-9-7 avg is 33

I'm doubting whether i should even apply...
Im banking on the MCAT to help out...
any brutally honest answers please?

Totally depends on what your MCAT turns out to be. Have you considered waiting a year? A lot of students' resumes and gpas look better after completing Senior year. It would give you a whole extra years worth of grades. The upward trend you have is awesome though and will definitely work in your favor. A lot of schools are very forgiving if you had a "slip up" freshman year and the rest of your grades were very competitive.

yeah i know... i wanted to wait for my MCAT score and apply...If it isnt competitive enough then I wouldn't have but I'm afraid once I find my score it will be a little late

In agreement with what Lewist said, if you can afford to spend an extra year, making your application even better (in terms of GPA and maybe more time to study for the MCAT in case you need to take it again), then by all means, do so.

Hey guys- I'm applying to NYCOM for the 2010-2011 cycle. My primary app has already been verified. When should I submit the secondary app and my LORs? I see that NYCOM has their secondary posted already on their website. Thanks for your help!

For the "Discuss your reasons for applying to NYCOM" essay on the secondary, does anyone know if there is a character limit? There doesn't seem to be one but I don't want to go overboard and write too much or end up writing too little. Any opinions/advice from previous applicants or anyone who's already filled out the secondary?

When I applied, I just used the space they gave in the application. I think you should just be honest & list all your reasons as concisely as you can.

Anyone submit their secondary to NYCOM yet? Did you just go ahead and do it since it's online or did you receive an e-mail telling you to?

Don't get discouraged because of your low GPA, Apply early and you have a good chance I will say! I am also from stony brook and just got in to NYCOM with not so perfect application.
Good luck!

I wrote one sentence and I got in. They seem to care more about stats than essays and community service. Also, I wouldn't fill out the secondary until they give you an interview. Unless they changed the policy this year, they only consider the primary when handing out interview invites. It's a waste of money to do it ahead of time. Just think about what you want to write for when you get your interview.

Even if you do score very high on the mcat, I don't believe a sub 3.0 will give you an acceptance. It all depends on what tier your school falls under. If I had to guess, the average requirements are: Gpa 3.4-3.5 Mcat 26-27 assuming you also have good extras (community service, research, good clinics, etc). My stats sGpa 3.6 cGpa 3.5 Mcat 28P, DO letter from Nycom alum, 3 years research, and a lot of comm serv. I would say really try to get a nycom alum letter. Good luck to all!

I would have to disagree and say one of the strongest aspects of nycom is their administration. They are very good at keeping in contact. As an accepted student, they send out letters and packages all the time for updates. Most of the time, they also handsign their letters! Everytime I come to campus everyone greets you and is always willing to help. I know during the admissions process things can be hectic and chaotic. But you have to cut them some slack, they are looking at over 6,000 applications!

Just to ask again...did anyone actually submit the secondary? Or should we wait until/if we get an interview? I mean it does say

"Every applicant to NYCOM is invited to complete our online supplemental application and submit the NON-REFUNDABLE supplemental fee of $60.00 electronically."

I submitted mine!

just so u all know (seems like a few of u dont) that NYCOM only offers secondaries to ppl it wants to interview....so filling it out on your own can be a waste of money for no reason!!

it doesnt put u at an advantage over those who havent done the secondary!!!

Actually...not anymore. Nycom changed it's secondary policy half way through this past cycle. They now let everyone who meets their basic criteria fill it out. I wouldn't fill it out until they email it to you, but this policy has changed and NYCOM now sends it to everyone. Changing it in the middle of the cycle was kind of shady and created a lot of confusion last year but I guess they finally realized the $ they were missing out on.

interesting....but i agree with you in that its not worth it until they tell you to do it.

Yeah...changing it midway through created a lot of confusion and really kind of soured a lot of people on the school. I ended up getting accepted but turned them down because of a few other reasons...but I kind of regret it now because I'm reapplying this year...🙄
(probably not to nycom though)

not sure why there is a link on their website then.. to fill out the secondary and it invites all applicants to submit one...very confusing.

But if you re-apply to NYCOM this year your secondary is already filled out, at least mine is

i'm still waiting on the secondary invite... hopefully, they're just waiting for my new mcat.

I know, I probably should reapply but its just something didn't click on my interview day...plus if I did get an interview this year I would have to probably explain why I turned down their acceptance which would require some finesse.

Well if you were accepted and didn't want to go I'd suggest not reapplying

Does anyone currently go to NYCOM or has more info on the school? I have looked at the school website but am hoping to find out more about the school. Is the school located in the city? What about NYCOM that stands out from others? What is unique about NYCOM? Please reply if you have more information. Thanks.

NYCOM is out on long island in Old Westbury. If you take LIRR its probably ~45 minutes to an hour to manhattan, driving will be longer as traffic in NYC and LI is pretty horrible. The school itself is on NYIT's campus spread out in 4 buildings. It has some of the largest classes out of all medical schools ~330 students. They tend to have a preference for NYS students first, but I am from MA and got an interview in Mid November, so OOS students are welcome too. Most stats indicate if you are lucky to get an early interview then you will probably get in. They start interviewing in late Oct/early Nov, so they start a little later than most schools. It's a nice school, they have some very strict policies in regards to attendance, and living in LI is very expensive, but can be done with roommates. Supposedly 27 and 3.4ish are the magic numbers for an interview, but it does seem they are a little flexible on this. Plus being in contact with the school helps. (An admissions rep came to my school and after talking to them I got an interview 3 days later, so don't be afraid to call them because it may help, especially if you have slightly lower stats or are OOS)

Ultimately, I chose not to matriculate because the school didn't feel like it was a good fir for me but it seemed like a pretty decent school. They are known for their PBL class, if you are interested in that.

Wow, those stats are epic. Looks like an OOS applicant with a 3.5 and a 27 doesn't have much of a shot then I guess? 🙁

Dagger because I'm beginning to like the school more and more as I keep reading about it.

You posted that while I was typing my post haha, definitely answered my question with the most favorable answer I could have hoped for. 😀

So I was wondering if I should start the secondary or not, as it is posted on the website already and you can create a login. However, I e-mailed admissions and explained to them that my primary application was verified and sent to them about 6 weeks prior, and was wondering where I was at in the application process and if I should start the secondary. The response I received from them was to not start the secondary application until they verify your original application and e-mail you the invitation to start the secondary application.

-Hope that helps.
