NYCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Withdrew my acceptance from NYCOM. I hope my seat goes to one of you!

Withdrew from the waiting list. Hope it actually makes a difference for someone wanting in.

As someone who also interviewed at Hofstra, I can say that our group that day did ask about students taking up rotation spots since we were worried about being hated on by students from other schools. We were told that even when the school starts enrolling 100 students/class, they'll be doing different rotations at different times in different hospitals within their network (15 hospitals). So I totally agree with those who said it wouldn't be a problem.

Would anyone be kind enough to explain Nycom's combined undergraduate and medical school program?

The DO I'm currently shadowing did the above and I'd like to know more. She's usually super busy while I'm there, so I wouldn't mind getting an overview before getting into specifics.

Can you transfer into the program from another university? Or do you have to be straight out of high school?

I read this here

Just withdrew my acceptance and hopefully it will help the next wait-lister. I got accepted last November and hopefully they won't punish me for telling them this late lol. (Loss of $1500 hurts btw lol)

Hey everyone, I just decided that I want to apply to DO school (almost ready to submit my application) and was wondering if someone can tell me what my chances are at NYCOM. I'm a NY resident with a 3.92 GPA (cumulative, science, and non-science as well). I majored in Biology and Philosophy as an undergrad, and have lots of clinical experience (volunteered in a hospital, worked as an EMT) as well as research experience. I also have leadership and teaching experience. I am shadowing both MD and DO physicians this summer. However, I have a really bad MCAT verbal score (PS-10, VR-5, BS-12, WS O: 27O). I just retook the MCAT recently and am waiting for my score (hope that verbal score goes up). Is that 5 going to be a huge red flag for NYCOM? Or do my other credentials make up for it? Thanks! :luck:

So I dunno how strict NYCOM is but what i do know is that DO schools are more open minded. If for example you check out a school like MSUCOM, they state on their website that they will consider apps with MCAT verbals as low as a 4. I'm sure not all schools are like that but MSU has a solid reputation so I would say there is some hope. I hope there is at least, because I happen to be in the same position you are in.

Has anyOne heard anything about orientation? I haven't received anything since the email setup... Starting to worry...

I called last week and they said there hasnt been any movement. I dont know about this week.

How many people are in the medprep class?? If all those people are accepted how will anyone from the waitlist get accepted at all?

I have decided to withdraw from my seat at NYCOM.

Good luck everyone! Hope the spot goes to someone here on the wait list.

Thank you! That's very kind of you.

Yeah, it was a tough choice. I was mentally psyched for NYCOM at this point and starting the year but got a late acceptance the other week from a school I interviewed at in March. NYCOM is a great place and was my top DO choice, so very grateful to have had that opportunity. I'll still be in the area, so who knows - maybe bump into you on an elective haha.

I am also withdrawing my acceptance to NYCOM. I hope one of you gets it 🙂

Called this week. There has been no movement. The secretary isn't sure if the waitlist will move at all. There have been years where it didn't move. Hate to be a Debbie Downer but I would start looking for other options at this point. Sorry fellow waitlisters.

If people have been withdrawing and their is no movement then it's a bad sign. Gl people.

yeah apparently these seats get overfilled and then the waitlist never ends up moving which defeats the whole purpose of a waitlist but clearly nothing ever makes any sense.

Hey guys I'm new to student doc but I wanted to join bc I am also waitlisted at nycom...i called the other day and the woman told me its not technically a "list"and they re review our files when spots open...so that can explain why theres more of a delay...nycom seems to call people a few days before classes begin ive heard this from multiple people who it happened to...i hope this helps! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!

Hey guys, just to clear some things up - NYCOM doesn't send out formal rejections, it's usually just acceptance after interview (which if you interview early in the process is about 90% likely), or late interview and waitlist, or no interview at all (and no correspondence).

In any case, good luck to all those on the wait-list. I don't think it's unheard of to be accepted a couple of days before classes begin. But obviously, have other options ready just in case.

A new incredible organization: Health Care Students 4 Donation is being started at schools all around New York. The lack of viable organ donors is a crisis and we are trying to resolve it! We are looking for ambitious and passionate medical student leaders to get involved at NYCOM Medical School, so if you are interested please facebook message me elisha 'bryan' lieber for more info or E-mail: [email protected].

I just withdrew my spot for this fall's incoming NYCOM class.. I know, a lil late, but I hope one of ya'll get it- orientation is in two days... I'd call them now

Hey, everyone! Very belated congrats on your acceptances 😀
I'm currently in grad school in NJ and I was wondering, now that you're all seasoned and wise first years-- would anyone be up for giving me (and maybe one other person) a tour of NYCOM perhaps on March 10th (a Saturday)?
NYCOM doesn't do open house/tours as I was informed by the admissions committee and I would really love to get to know it better from the eyes of a first year student. If anyone would like to take on this challenge, please PM me- I'd really appreciate it 🙂
