NYCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I was wondering if I should start the secondary or not, as it is posted on the website already and you can create a login. However, I e-mailed admissions and explained to them that my primary application was verified and sent to them about 6 weeks prior, and was wondering where I was at in the application process and if I should start the secondary. The response I received from them was to not start the secondary application until they verify your original application and e-mail you the invitation to start the secondary application.

-Hope that helps.

I called and asked and got a very abrasive "we aren't even starting until september" response.

this school is not making any sense. There were a couple of SDNers who called and were told to go ahead and send the secondary but there were also others who got the same response you guys have been getting to not start it.

When I first called, they said not to send in a secondary until I received an invite. After hearing a couple SDNers say they were told to send it in, I called again a week or two later and was told to send in the secondary as well. They said that they dont start the application process until they have all your material in including LORs and the secondary. I ended up sending my secondary in without any invite. based on what they have been telling students, I don't know what to believe

(the two times I called, they werent aware of my name, stats, or location)

I did not submit my secondary until I was invited to do so. I also got an interview invite along with my secondary invite. They could have changed that this year however.

Looking at the instructions for the supplemental on their website, it clearly states when to send the Supplemental:

When can I submit my supplemental application?
 You may submit your supplemental application upon receipt of
acknowledgment of your AACOMAS primary application from the Admissions
Office.

So if you have recieved that email then you can send it, If not then not following directions never really worked in my life, but if it did in yours go for it!!!

Sometimes people don't know what they are talking about, I rather trust something in writing then word of mouth, unless you recorded the convo.

Hey, could you post the link to this message.

THanks!

Does anyone know when we are suppose to sent NYCOM our letters of rec? A worker at the school told me September, anyone hear anything different?

Does this also mean that we should hold off on letters until we get the secondary invitation?

For most D.O. schools, I would not send in any letters at all until they confirm they received your primary. This means that they most likely have a file for you and will be expecting them. If you do it before they confirm receipt of your primary, the risk of the letters getting lost is going to be higher. Since nycom uses an electronic secondary, they really can't lose that but I still don't think I would fill that out either until they confirm they have your primary too. I know NYCOM definitely takes their time with secondaries and the application process in general so if you don't want to wait for them to email you about your primary, you may just want to email them yourself. But I definitely wouldn't send in letters until you know for sure they have your primary.

Hey everyone, I just decided that I want to apply to DO school (almost ready to submit my application) and was wondering if someone can tell me what my chances are at NYCOM. I'm a NY resident with a 3.92 GPA (cumulative, science, and non-science as well). I majored in Biology and Philosophy as an undergrad, and have lots of clinical experience (volunteered in a hospital, worked as an EMT) as well as research experience. I also have leadership and teaching experience. I am shadowing both MD and DO physicians this summer. However, I have a really bad MCAT verbal score (PS-10, VR-5, BS-12, WS O: 27O). I just retook the MCAT recently and am waiting for my score (hope that verbal score goes up). Is that 5 going to be a huge red flag for NYCOM? Or do my other credentials make up for it? Thanks! :luck:

Damn, another person's MD chances shot down by the MCAT. I think the only thing that might hold back your NYCOM app is the verbal score. I've been reading recently that schools don't like to see a verbal score below 7, but I would definitely call them and ask them directly what their position is on it. Assuming you have even decent EC's, however, the rest of your app looks solid for DO schools.

I know, it sucks...eh, oh well. I'd be really happy if I got into NYCOM. I think I will get in touch with them and ask. Hopefully my verbal score for the retake has improved (I know it will DEFINITELY be above a 5, lol...that was just a really weird anomaly)...guess I'll find out at the end of the month.

Unfortunately that 5 in verbal is going to be a deterrent for any school. DO schools are more forgiving but most still require you have at least a 6 in every section. Even if your score in other sections go down you are going to be in much better shape with a higher verbal. I'll cross my fingers for you, I hate that one section of one test on a single day can crush someones dream of becoming a Dr.

FWIW, nearly 70% of applicants with your GPA and MCAT score got accepted to MD schools last year so don't lose hope. If you can manage to raise that verbal score you'll have a great shot at acceptance to both MD and DO schools

Thanks, I hope my verbal score is much better this time around. I guess I'll know at the end of the month :xf:

Does NYCOM specifically invite applicants to submit secondaries or can we submit them whenever we want? The website says the following:

"Every applicant to NYCOM is invited to complete our online supplemental application and submit the NON-REFUNDABLE supplemental fee of $60.00 electronically."

Does this mean I can go ahead and submit a secondary or do I have to wait for an e-mail inviting me to do so?

This was covered a few times in the thread already with someone finally finding a FAQ that said don't send a secondary until they acknowledge receipt of your primary and invite you to do so. You could call them as well, everyone has been getting slightly different answers.

Do students commute by train (LIRR) from the city or from Brooklyn to NYCOM?

Check the CBT or with the admissions office. Each school sets their own specifics policies in terms of the MCAT and LORs. AACOMAS will take the January MCAT since some schools do, but for others this is far too late and you're application wouldn't be complete until February, which is pushing deadlines for DO schools. At that point if you do some how get an interview invite, you'd be battling for waitlist positions. I'd highly recommend you take the MCAT this summer if you're ready and not push it off until January.

I know people that do it from Brooklyn/Queens. You just have to decide what's best for you in times of travel time, money, etc. There's definitely better apartments and prices in BQ & Queens but OMS 1&2, being closer to campus is probably a better decision I'd imagine. After that, living in the outer boroughs might be better depending where your clerkships are. A friend of mine is doing one of his rotations in the Bronx, so obviously if you're living in Astoria that's just a stone throw away, but it'd probably be a pain dealing with that in bound traffic from LI.

I wouldn't recommend living in Manhattan. Its the biggest waste of money. The only people that live there now are Long Islanders and out of staters there for the "experience". Basically immersion tourism. You can get a place of equal size for 25-60% less in the outer boroughs that is a 10min train ride to the city if that's your thing.

I submitted and was complete on 8/13

No interviews have gone out yet right?

NYCOM interviews much later than most schools. Last year, the first interview invites went out in the middle of September with interviews starting in November. Best of Luck everyone!

Hey CardioPlus, if you don't mind me asking, what made you choose NYCOM over the other 2 schools?

whew! glad to hear that NYCOM is just really slow... i was starting to assume i was rejected because i didn't get an invite, btw does anyone know the percentage that gets accepted to any kind of med school with a 3.3 gpa and a 34 MCAT score?? or at least where i can find that?

No worries; I have a pretty sweet place in Brooklyn (been here for a while now). Access to most major subway lines is only a few blocks away. I was just curious of what a commute on the LIRR would be like.
Thanks for the input dude.

I had my LOR sent to NYCOM but did not get an invite to fill out the secondary yet...oops...is it possible they trashed my LOR?

I know im jumping the gun here a lot since i haven't even received the secondary invite, but ive been checking the nycom match list from past years and it seems there is always one person that gets into a John Hopkins residency in one field or another. I was wondering how hard it is to get that spot and if those students also took the USMLE. If any current student could weigh in i would be interested. Would be a dream of mine to get a hopkins residency!! 😀

Hey, how long should the answer to the question be (discuss your reasons for applying to nycom)??

lollllll

I HOPE YOU ARE NOT TURNING IN UR SECONDARY! IT IS NOT GONNA GIVE YOU AN ADVANTAGE TO DO IT RIGHT NOW FOR NYCOM NOR IS IT RECOMMENDED BY THEM!!!!!

THEY WILL ONLY SEND YOU A SECONDARY INVITE IF THEY WANNA INTERVIEW YOU BASED ON YOUR PRIMARY. WASTE OF MONEY TO DO IT EARLY OTHERWISE.

haha thanks dude. I wasn't planning to submit it since I wasn't invited to submit it. I was just getting ready because I'm waiting on my secondaries and NYCOM is my top choice. I have a 28M and a 3.87 science GPA. I recently submitted my primary and I have time to do some secondaries before I get the invites lol. thanks for caring for me!!

I turned in my secondary.

I'm not worried about it; I doubt it will negatively affect my app. I also dont think it will help my app by being early.

were you invited for secondary or you just submitted the secondary without being invited?

Thanks

NYCOM takes sooo long to get going with the whole admissions process. I'm starting to get antsy 😱

just submitted

I think I'll wait to submit until they tell me to. Strange tactic by them though, they are very very late in the process at this point. I guess they are banking on the fact that NYers have them as the top choice. I'll have already heard of minimum 1 school before they even start sending out secondaries.

Yeah they are the only one I havent heard from - but I'm not really that concerned. If they dont consider me cos I applied too early then I'm not really sure I want to go there.

Each to his own, but I wanted to get the application-aspect over and done with, and move on to interviewing...

I have a lot of patience and I wil wait.

That was rather aloof lol

But anyways - like I said, I've made my bed and I'll lie in it. I made my decision and you have to do what you want to do.

Good luck to everyone either way

They didn't seem to mind and have sent me status updates about receiving things and telling me that immcomplete and whatnot

Interesting. until a week ago my old C/O 2014 secondary was there and I wasn't even able to submit a new one.

Also, to the person saying secondary = interview thats not the case anymore as of midway through last cycle.

I wonder if they'll do something like Western COMP this year -- offer "priority interviews" where they hand out a number of secondaries with interviews, then invite people to interview post-secondary later on. I know they changed their policy so that now everyone can submit the secondary, but I would think they would have sent out a mass secondary invite earlier if there was no screening whatsoever. I totally understand sending the invites late in previous years, since they also had to decide who to interview. But what's the excuse this year?
