I recently received an invitation for an interview from NYCOM. This is only my second interview, the good thing is I have received an acceptance to UNECOM, so a little bit of the pressure is off. The positives I see about NYCOM so far are that it is less than an hour away from my home in NY, and I believe their board passing rates are higher than that of UNECOM? Anyhow, I have read the interview feedback, and noticed that there is a wide range of responses, from very negative to very positive. If anybody who has gone to an interview has time, could you elaborate? I don't mean about specific questions, but just about the general environment, and any pro's and con's you noticed. I just want to get a feel for how it will be. I am a bit new on this forum, thanks for reading this post!

Pros:
Diversity of student body and faculty
State of the arts facilities
Easy access to NYC for rotations
Impressive residency matches
Firm curriculum
Robotic patients (1 adult and 1 ped)
Nice campus
Video-streamed lectures

Cons:
High cost of living in LI
No on-campus housing
Insanely large class (300 for Class of 2009)
Dropped out rate (due to personal or academic reasons) ~10% according to one of the medical students giving us the tour
8 students per cadaver
Small and nearly non-existent gym

Hope this works! Overall the people are very pleasant to talk to at NYCOM. Just enjoy your visit and interview! You will do GREAT!

4% attrition rate (last 4 year average) and the students per cadaver are a bit higher due to the large amount of prosections (8-10 bodies reserved for prosection.)

SuperDOgirl:
What do you mean by "frim curriculum"?I thought that it was constantly changing and they were not 100% sure on how the lecture based class would be changed.

I was told the cadevers were not prosected.

I believe in general NYCOM has a very strong curriculum when it comes to teahing its students about the basics. I heard it is more system based nowadays and they are implementing PBL this year.

I received a letter from them today and was hoping it was an interview invite but it was just a confirmation that they received my application. how disappointing

I asked what percentage passed their COMPLEX step 1 on first try and I was told 89% which is pretty decent.

pro:
You really get to enhance your clinical skills and patient contact with the Standardize Patients and the robot and that something I found really nice

con:
The cost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ahh thats awesome info! Thanks SuperDOGirl, HunterGatherer, lilzelda, buffalomoose. This will definitely be helpful to me. Also for the cost, New England's total with living expenses is roughly 59k a year, while NYCOM's tuition is about 34k, factor in living expenses and make it 45k. So technically, among my choices NYCOM is cheaper. Well, I'll just do my best on this upcoming interview and then factor in all this information. Thanks a lot people! 😀

Sorry but its alot more than 45k. At the interview they will break it down for you and tell you freshman year is going to cost around 60k and this will increase as it goes along

$58K -$62K were the numbers given out during Open House. And yes the Financial Aid presentation will let you know what's REALLY going on!

I am pretty sure I am releasing my spot at NYCOM this Friday. The 8-10 per cadaver just made it much easier. The MD school I am interviewing at tomorrow has 4 per cadaver and Des Moines (where I'll probably be heading) has 4 or 5 I believe.

If they cap you at $55k for borrowing(read this in another thread), where do they say they expect you to get the rest from?

MAybe you mean after the EFC is considered? You really will have to talk to financial aid about that at the interview or after.

I'm sorry NYCOM is over-priced.
