I've never posted before, but here goes:
I got an interview coming up on 1/8 @ NYCOM...

I am nervous as heck about it ... I haven't done volunteer work for a DO, but I have other EC's and research work under my belt.

What I am asking is:

1) what questions are on the secondary to prepare for?

2) has anyone else not done work for a DO and have been accepted?

3) is anyone else going there on that date?

if anyone replies, thanks!

😱

I also have an interview for NYCOM on Jan. 8! I just looked at some very helpful interview feedback found at:

http://www.studentdoctor.net/feedback/school.php

As a brief sumary, we need:

1. Our resume to help fill out the secondary application
2. Reasons for wanting to attend NYCOM for the secondary application essay
3. photo and $60
4. To stay calm and relaxed
5. And obviously, to know why DO, why NYCOM, strengths & weaknesses

Good luck!! Looking forward to meeting you and other prospective NYCOM students on the 8th. 🙂

thanks for responding

but has anyone had an interview can be more specific on what is asked on the secondary?

Well, the NYCOM secondary was very short and only took me about 10 minutes to fill out. The front of the page asked for all paid work, volunteer work, research, extra-curricular activities, and hobbies/liesure activities. On the back, there was a small space (only about 4-5 lines) to write the essay. I didn't think that there was nearly enough space, so try to write small (the essay is "Why NYCOM?"). They also want you to write down the names of all of your recommenders. I would suggest bringing a resume with all of your information so that you're not racking your brain trying to remember dates. You may also choose to pre-write your essay.
Just know every detail of osteopathic medicine and its history. Those will definitely be asked during your interview.

I was accepted without a letter of recommendation from a DO, but I did shadow one briefly (about a month). I hope that helps...

GOOD LUCK!

hey, congrats!
how long after u submitted your primary did you receive an interview?thanx

Hey guys! I was accepted to NYCOM last week. I too had no "DO shadowing" experience. The questions others mentioned are very accurate. The interview was SO laid back and nice. They didn't ask me, but a couple of others that interviewed with me said that they asked about the history of DO's, i.e. who founded it and when. They also asked, "if you got accepted to both MD and DO schools, which would you choose and why?" I really like that they take so much pride in the DO philosophy. The students and facilities were awesome! It was a very positive day - not just for me, but for everyone that interviewed that day (12/12).
My advice is to relax, enjoy, and take pride in who you are and what you have accomplished thusfar.

"My advice is to relax, enjoy, and take pride in who you are and what you have accomplished thusfar." That is excellent advice!

Su4n2,

My primary was sent in July and I was invited during the first round of interviews in November.

Congrats on your interviews and acceptances! I am an MS1 here at NYCOM. If you have any other questions I'd be happy to help! Hope to see you next year.
