I applied and got accepted to NYCOM for the class of 2007, but the thing is that I am going to take a year off instead due to financial reasons. I still would really like to attend NYCOM next year, but they do not offer year deferments at all. Anyways, I'm just going to apply again this year. I am wondering if I should write them a letter and what I should say in the letter to make sure that this does not hurt my application for next year. Any suggestions would help. Thanks!

I wouldnt worry terribly unless you're borderline. If I were you I would go to NYCOM and talk personally with the admissions director, Mr. Shaeffer, and see what he has to say. I dont know your situation personally, but taking a year off because of money really never helps the financial situation much. The admissons dept's argument will probably be "Everyone takes out loans and you're probably not going to be able to save enough within a year to make much of a dent in the price of 4 years of medical school, so why not start now and be one year closer to a much larger paycheck".

If I were you I'd tell NYCOM you're story, then tell them you'll apply again, but will only apply to NYCOM. In the fall, they can check with AACOM and they have friends at AMCAS to see if you were being honest. If so, I guarantee you they'd give you a seat again.

I go to nycom so feel free to PM me if you'd like.

good luck.

No, I'm not giving up my place at NYCOM just to try for an MD. My concern is definitely not the difference between an MD and a DO because I basically think a doctor is a doctor and MD's and DO's are practically the same except for the philosophy and OMM practice. 2 of my neighbors go to NYCOM and I would want nothing more than to go there, my problem is that I live in Buffalo and it would be a lot cheaper to go to UB Medical school if I could get in(I'd live at home & its a state school). It would end up costing about 1/5th the price. Yes, I could take out loans to go to NYCOM, but I would be a lot more in dept after I get out than I would if I went to a state school. That is my concern and my parents' main concern. I really did like NYCOM a lot and wanted to go there very badly. I'm going to apply next year, and I'm going to apply to more than just NYCOM though because I want to keep my options open in terms of money, and in case I don't get accepted to NYCOM again. I guess I was just wondering what the polite way of declining an acceptance is? Thanks for your input 🙂

jglemonade1...

If you go to UB, if you get in, you'll save money, for now. However, look at it another way. If you spend another year out of school, it'll actually wind up costing you money a few years down the road rather than saving you money. Why? Because you'll be giving up a year of an attending's salary, which will probably be more than all of medical school combined. If you take out the nice cheap government loans like everyone else, then you make $150-200,000 a whole year earlier, then your investment has paid off. Get my drift? Loans are so cheap that even if your family had the money to write a check for tuition outright, many say take out the loans and have them invest the cash, for the invested money will make more return back over the 10-20 year life of the loan than you're paying in interest. I'm not a financial planner, but I think you get the drift.

As far as living expenses, you can rotate at Sisters Hospital in Buffalo 3rd and 4th year if you wish, so you can live at home and living expenses would be equal to UB those years.

One may ask, why even apply to NYCOM at all if you were scared of the price? It aint going to get cheaper next year.

Make a decision soon though, there's a long waiting list salvating right now.

Thanks for the advice, you make some good points. I will make my decision soon.

I'm interested in your decision! What did you end up doing?

Whatever your decision, I wish you the best!
