I just wanted to know what the pros and cons are for these two schools? If you have the answers to the following questions for each, that would be helpful as well:
1- pass rate
2- #people to cadaver
3- is there a student run free clinic
4- what are the changes in the curriculum and are these changes for the better or the worse
5- is there a preceptor program
6- any info on the summer pre-matriculation programs
7- what's the exam schedule
8- when in the year do you start seeing real patients
9- type of support provided by the school
10-curriculum type - any integration or individual subject based
all good questions, i'll see what i can do to answer them
1- don't know for sure but i hear it's pretty good (this is more based on you as a student anyway)
2- 4 ppl to a cadaver
3- yes, student run clinic in Camden
4- changes are definitely for the better, PM me for details
5- preceptor program is really good, we're required to do 30 hours a year for the first 2 years (you can do more if you want and you will learn tons of clinical medicine and procedures before you hit the wards)
6- i personally don't have info on the pre-matric program but know how it works - you start early with some profs and some students who did well in the class who serve as TAs - it's basically intro to your first block of med school and although you will study and review material your grades in pre-matric do not affect your true grades when everyone starts - from what i have heard it's a great way to get to know people in the class and learn some tips from the previous class
7- exam schedule is block- we go for anywhere from 4-6 weeks worth of info and have a whole week dedicated to exams (no classes during exam blocks for the first year, second year is different) 3 exam blocks each semester
8- you start seeing real patients the minute you begin your preceptorship which can begin as soon as you find out who your preceptor is (very early in the semester)
9- support comes in many many many forms
your big bro/sis
your fellow classmates
any second year you find in the hallway
free tutors (second years who did well in your classes)
cognitive skills department that will work one on one with you to develop studying strategies, etc.
any and all profs at almost any time (seriously)
financial support (we get info sessions on how to budget our money, plus there are tons of free lunches here)
mental health (tons of organizations)
physical health (gym on campus)
the list goes on
10- currently in the works, PM for details
hope this helps, I'm a first year at SOM and am very happy here.
