Hi all,

I have been accepted to both NYCOM and UMDNJ and I am very split between the two. I am OOS for both, although I know UMDNJ allows IS tuition for the last 3 years. If there are any current students out there that could provide for me their likes and dislikes about either of these schools I would greatly appreciate it! Of course opinions and observations for prospective students is also appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help

You will end up with a bunch of people saying "NYCOM hands down" or "UMDNJ hands down." This thread won't be helpful. It shouldn't matter what other peoples' likes or dislikes are. I got accepted to both as well. Everyone is different. Tuition is a big thing. Locations are completely different as well. I believe NYCOM's class size is double that of UMDNJSOM. Clinical affiliations and 3rd/4th year requirements are different. To some these are positives, to others these are negatives. Either school will get you where you want to be. Don't base a decision on the anecdotes of others.

everything he said. and ill say it again, the difference in tuition and cost of living. i would say umd just 4 that

If UNJ gives you instate tuition after your first year, i'd say go there. UNJ is a state school, so its going to give you the better rotation sites then nycom. It'll also probably be more prestigious and might land you into a better residency.
However if UNJ doesnt give you instate the next year, i'd go to NYCOM, its much cheaper.

<sigh> This is precisely the reason why I told the OP not to listen to anyone.

Fine, lemme mix this up.

Go to NYCOM. Do it now. It will be the best decision you will ever make. In fact, your great-grandchildren will erect a shrine to you and make offerings each day in awe of your greatness for choosing NYCOM and leading your descendants on a path of great fortune and honor. It has been foreseen.

Also, I could use the extra open spot at UMDNJ. 😀

to get this thread back on track, OP you would be crazy not to choose UMDNJ, they give you IS tuition after 1 year. I am saying this ONLY because of the enormous difference in both of the schools tuition and also it would be much cheaper to live in NJ than where NYCOM is located. coming out of med school at least 60k less is a significant amount. Both schools will give you a great education and the rotations are both good, however I would go with the much cheaper school.

thanks for the help! Does anyone have any experience with the rotations at umdnj-som and nycom and can comment on them?

The rotations are done within out hospital system and affiliated hospitals. You do not have to look for your own rotations in your 3rd year except for Radiology. In your 4th year, you can go practically anywhere you want.

If you are from North Jersey, you can do your rotations at either Christ Hospital in Jersey City or St. Mathews in Patternson. And they are working on adding more hospital affiliations.

You can live in one place during all your 3rd and 4th year rotations at both schools. Both schools will tell you where to do your 3rd year rotations, 4th year you get to choose. Both schools are affiliated with some hospitals that are large academic centers, and some that are smaller community hospitals. If money is a big issue for you, go to the cheaper school. If being close to family is a big issue for you, go to the closer school.

I honestly think that the tuition difference between the schools, and the cost of living difference is so large that you would have to take umdnj's acceptance and run with it. I mean your looking at almost 100k less in loans, thats allota cheese.

Yeah, but you would in a heart beat attend PCOM, where the cost is not too far from that of NYCOM. If someone looked at NYCOM the way you do PCOM, the money doesn't matter.

Yeah but nycom is not pcom and pcom is better....lol ok u got me. Ps u better choose pcom

The class size at UMDNJ-SOM is way smaller than at NYCOM (120 vs. 315) and based on board passing rates for both schools (in the 90s for UMDNJ, in the 80s for NYCOM) I'd say go to UMDNJ. Also UMDNJ has a lower attrition rate and higher incoming class stats (than NYCOM and most other DO schools). The rotations for UMDNJ (if you do the south jersey tract) are a lot closer (in some cases right acorss the street) than the ones for NYCOM; less moving around and hassle for you. UMDNJ-SOM also shares some professors with UMDNJ-RWJ.

UMDNJ has increased class size to 135. The future potential is 150. However that is the limit. The Dean refuses to let the class size get too big.

Out of curiosity, do you think it's going to increase before the newest class comes in? I'm interested in seeing what they'll do regarding classroom space between this year's first year class and the incoming one.

from what I hear, 135 is the magic number right now. But then again, I could be wrong. The dean has said that things are being discussed regarding the increased class size but I am too low on any totem pole to be privy to any of that information.

Hmph. The real Joker would know.

Thanks though. I just wanted to see what the on-campus gossip said.

wait, is it really true that umdnj gives u instate tuition after year 1? what do you need to do to qualify?

As far as I've read, yes.

I believe all you need is to have lived in NJ for one year and to change your driver's license to NJ. There's also something to do with car insurance or registration - I forget. Someone else can fill that part in.

i am in the same boat here, i really liked both schools and am an NJ resident. I have been doing some reading on SDN, reading from way back about the schools and it said that UMDNJ has a weak peds program. I was wondering if anyone else had heard this. I really hope its not true! Also, does anybody have any comments on which school would give a better all around clinical experience. I have read through a lot, and i am REALLY unsure which one would be better in terms of rotation sites.

Go to UNJSOM, it's way cheaper.

ktj6130, it is interesting to me that we are trying to make the same decision for a few reasons. One, whereas you are from NJ, I am from Long Island. To address your Peds question, yes I have heard from several sources that have graduated from UMDNJ-SOM that the Peds rotation is very weak. However, my major source of information about the school is from my current employer, a graduate of UMDNJ-SOM and a current Pediatrician! So clearly the rotation did not stop her from succeeding in the field.

I am also split with regard to the rotation sites. As I am from LI, I have heard many positive remarks about the rotation sites NYCOM has to offer and ultimately I do want to end up doing a residency here. Aside from the Peds rotation I haven't really heard much about the rotations at UMDNJ-SOM besides just the hospital names.. but as you clearly know there are many positives to both schools.

Good luck with your decision too!
