I'm not really sure how to choose between the two schools. Both seem to have there good and bad points.

However, it seems that a lot of people on this board are choosing NYCOM as their first choice? I was wondering how some of you making the decision, or what are the factors attracting you to either school.

Thanks for help.

I chose NYCOM for couple of reasons, one being the wide choice of available rotation sites. Also, UNECOM residency match listing was not very impressive to me.
Good luck.

Choose the one you felt happier at.

UNECOM is smaller and doesn't have the big university feel behind it unlike NYIT.
I thought UNE's residency matches where good.. but I did not see NY's.

I didn't evens end my secondary into UNECOM after I was accepted to NYCOM, only because I could not imagine living in an area with such a small population. I have heard UNECOM is in a beautiful location, but I am more attracted to the rotation opportunities at NYCOM.
You have to focus on what is important to you and where you will be the happiest.

I was accepted at both places. I withdrew from UNECOM, and I'm not entirely sure I'll end up at NYCOM...but NYCOM is a better fit for me. UNECOM has a great location, and the students came across as a very warm, tightly knit group. I probably could have been happy there...but it's far from most of the people I care about, and I didn't feel like its affiliated hospitals were as strong for clinical education as NYCOM. I probably would have spent my third and fourth years at UNECOM in NJ at the affiliated Newark and Hackensack locations, if I remember correctly. Anyway, yes NYCOM has an impressive match list, but I'm not sure how much stock I place in that. UNECOM's match list is perfectly fine, and when you consider how large NYCOM's class size is, there are bound to be some very impressive matches. You could probably go on with a debate like this forever...so I would agree with a previous post. Go where you feel is the place for you to be...where you felt the most comfortable on interview day. Unless you're set on what specialty you'd like to go into, I would have the main factor in my decision be my gut feeling when I am at a particular school. Good luck!

I almost wish I had applied to UNECOM. NYCOM has a HUGE class size, and they don't make any attempt to hide it or change the feel of it. Not my bag, really...

UNECOM has some GREAT beachfront property in Biddeford, ME, except, well, it's not really a beach for 8 months out of the year (more like a glacier, sort of). But, it's still very pretty and apparently the students often rent out beach cottages for the first 2 years. Which seems pretty cool. 😉 I can only assume the cost of living is much less than in Long Island, which is LuDiCrIs-ly high.

Of course, the grass is always greener. I'm going to try to go by feel, if I have the chance to choose between two schools. If not, I'll just settle in wherever and try to make the most of it, I suppose. 😉

From what they say, you do ranking list of the hospitals you want to rotate but then computer does the match, so hate to disappoint you but unless they change it you can spent one rotation in Buffalo, another in NY and so on

I'm not sure what you are responding to, where did he ever mention that wouldn't be the case? But i assure you if you dont want to do a rotation in buffalo you wont. We do use a computer match but there are about 12-15 hospitals to choose from. Most are in NY/LI area and northern NJ with 4-5 scattered around the rest of NY. From what ive been told hardly anyone goes further down the list that their 3rd choice. With that said if you dont want to do a rotation in buffalo or NJ, dont rank them. Also we have a regional campus program where you can do all of your third year at one hospital.

That is correct!!!!! 😀
Most people will receive their 1st or second choice of hospitals, or you can choose to participate in a regional clinical campus, where you complete all of your third year rotations at one large hospital. I am currently completeing my 3rd year at St Barnabas Hospital. A large level 1 trauma center in the south Bronx. Trust me, you see and do everything here.

DOnut, I PMed you a few days ago😀 I need the down low on doing a regional campus. How competitive is it, whats the selection process? Is lutheran any good? How's their surgery residency?

You know the usual nerotic med student stuff. Ill pm you again with more specific questions in a few days if thats ok, but right now I have to go back to studying. We are in the middle of blocks right now 😳 .

Whateve You Do.....dont' Come To Nycom!!!!!!! Its Got To Be The Worst School...go Anywhere But Here If You Have The Choice...believe Me..im A Nycom M-1 And Im Miserable And Our School Sucks Bigtime....believe Me.

Cowboy DO,
Lutheran has plenty of DO residents there. You get to see a lil bit of everything, may not be as intense as Kings County but what are you gonna do. If I were I would go check it out. All the volunteering I do is adequate for what I'm looking for. As per Surgical residents on staff are all DO's.

Nobody pay attention to amoxicillin. Evidently hes not preforming so well in class. I love it when students who do poorly blame the teachers for not “teaching good enough” or the administration for “setting them up to fail”. News flash, they want us all to pass, graduate, get high paying jobs, and donate back to the school. What you have to understand is that med school is difficult, not everyone can just breeze through it. This is a characteristic of the field of medicine itself, not a scheme thought up by the school to screw students. Theres a lot of stuff to teach and only 4 years in which to teach it. Just keep your head down, and try and enjoy the ride as much as possible.

Anyway, thanks for the info bkpa2med. You have any idea how the teaching at lutheran is also and is there any research going on there?

As for teaching I don't know. The only research that I have heard is Ortho related, in which a protein (i forgot the name) is injected into the bone and the statistics show about a 2 week faster healing rate. Now I got a question for you... How are your stats because I'm looking to apply in a year or 2?

Thanks

I am a 4th year at NYCOM and points of all of the above are true- but I would add one additional comment-

Go to a location you would be happy to work in- from my interviewing experience residency programs feel comfortable taking graduates from schools where former residents have come from and done well-

It has to be a personal decision but keep in mind:
Location
Class size
Rotations- sites
Matching history
Comfort level with how you fit in

good luck! 🙂
