I'm torn between these two schools. I love them both for completely different reasons and feel that I would have a very different experience depending on which one I choose. Is anyone else deciding between these two schools or have a general opinion as to which school has a better reputation overall?

What are those reasons?

In terms of reputation, I would definitely say that NYCOM is the better option, but that's just my two cents.

I don't know too much about UNE so I won't say anything about that. But I do know that NYCOM has an excellent reputation in NYC. Many of my friends that are in medical school (M.D.) and have rotated through the hospitals in the NY area have all said, at one time or another, received training from DO's both inside and outside the classroom. Moreover, many program directors (both MD and DO residencies) in NYC look highly of their graduates since it is a well established institution. People who know or have heard about NYCOM often say that the school provides excellent medical education. A friend of mine that is currently PGY1 at Jacobi Medical Center (graduated from NYU SOM), told me his ER attending was a DO and one of his clinical instructor for OB/GYN was a DO as well, all graduated from NYCOM. One of his classmates in his residency class is a DO who have also graduated from NYCOM. He said she is one of the top students in his class. I don't think you can go wrong with NYCOM especially if you have intentions of practicing in the NYC area 😀

Regardless though, congrats on getting into medical school! I'm sure both schools will provide you with the education you need to become a successful and highly competent Physician!

I think the reputation of the school will really vary depending on where you are. Obviously, in New York NYCOM will be better known. However, go to Boston and you will meet far more DOs who graduated from UNECOM. Granted, I am a little biased (UNECOM class 2013!) but I do know that over the last several years UNE has matched students to The Mayo Clinic, The Lahey Clinic, Dartmouth and UMass. I think the school you pick in some way can give you an advantage on getting jobs in a specific area of the country, so if you really enjoy both schools think about where you might want to end up working. Obviously, people from schools in California get jobs in Chicago all the time but you do and can make connections based upon the area of the country that you go to school.
Good luck in making your decisions and congratulations on getting accepted!

You'll be fine at either. I know a girl's dad who is on staff with Dartmouth. He supposedly encounters a fair amount of UNECOM students and graduates and has stated that many of them were better prepared and more mature than the Dartmouth students he encountered. It is anecdotal, but I've heard tons of stories like that. If you love NYC then NYCOM may be the best bet, but if it were my choice I'd go with UNECOM. I have no urge to live in NYC and have not heard the greatest things about many NYC residency programs since so many people want to live there and the programs can get by on location alone. That is just me and we all have different reasons for going to different places.
