Hello everyone,

I recently had an interview at NYIT-COM and wanted to get a sense of what life is like there.
What is a typical day like? How are the professors? Is the workload reasonable? Do students have a social life? My questions also stretch to other MD/DO schools as well.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Med school is not as bad as most people make it out to be. There's some truly bad times, but overall it isn't much worse than working a difficult job out of undergrad for 60-80 hours a week. Hell, sometimes it's even better than that.

Of course, that all depends on what your goals are. If you're some uber-gunner, plan on putting in more time and making yourself suffer. If you're more relaxed, you can have a pretty good time, but you probably will sacrifice your shot at derm or surgery or whatever. Basically, don't plan to have it all.

IMO people just love to whine about how hard med school is. It's not bad at all and I'm really enjoying it for the most part. I do think choosing a school where you think you'll be happy is huge. I love my school and its community; without that support, I'd probably be much less happy than I am currently.

Let me clarify that sucks doesn't equal hard. Medschool is easier than a full time job but just that your life is consumed with school until you realize that being the top of your class isn't worth it because you hate skin and hate standing all the time for surgery. Then you start to enjoy life. That's why I also said it gets better.

Learning balance is the sucky part

haha thanks guys for all the responses! Just out of curiosity do you guys manage to make enough time to have a life out of medical such as the opportunity to work out and stuff.

Yep, it's all about balance. I have a hobby I thought I'd have to give up coming into med school, but now I have more time for that hobby than I did while working full time before school.

I am a current OMSII at NYIT-COM, the workload is very reasonable. The important thing is to not fall behind, as long as you do the work you are supposed to do, when you are supposed to do it, you will do fine. I personally spend one day every weekend hanging out with friends and enjoying myself, obviously if the work picks up or I have a test, I study, but there is no reason to not have a social life.

Can you elaborate a little on campus life? Do most people commute or live in a single/double? Also, are lecture mandatory or recorded? Thanks a lot!

How much time do you guys get to study for either STEP or Comlex? And do you feel most professors are passionate enough on a scale of put me to sleep - I'm wide awake and excited haha.

Most people live near campus, some do commute from Brooklyn, or farther away in Long Island. Some people live alone (like me), others have roommates, like any other school. Lecture for me isnt mandatory, its recorded and posted a few minutes after the lecture ends. I'm a streamer, so I essentially do them as soon as they are posted, and have enough time to generally finish them all the same day. We have plenty of clubs to join, and there are events and workshops going on nearly every day. We have good amenities, but like I said I'm a streamer so don't really spend to much time on campus.

For me, I just registered for both. We must take the COMLEX by June 29th, and classes end the first week of May. So depending on how you schedule it, you can get at least 6-7 weeks of solid board prep, without any classes. I will have 5 weeks before the USMLE, and then a week and a half before the COMLEX, but i think I'll manage. Plus I'll probably start early non intensive board prep in January.
That depends, we have some professors that are very boring, and some that are exciting. However, for the boring ones, you can just stream their lectures at 1.5 or 2x speed, and it'll be less boring.

If you two have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

how is accessibilty to professors via email & in person? how is the financial & educationalsupport?
