Program-Specific Info / Q's NYIT OT 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received my acceptance via email today. I had my interview on Jan 9th and finally heard back today. I applied to many programs and received many rejections and waitlist offers. It's been a long wait but I'm excited that this turned out in my favor. Try to stay positive. I am excited and looking forward to meeting my future classmates 🙂

Thanks Gina. I appreciate it. I'm just super excited. I live like 15 mins away from the school so this is a perfect choice for me.

that's great that you don't have to travel at all or dorm. i'm going to be dorming there which isn't ideal but I really liked the school.

Yes I consider myself very lucky but honestly Old Westbury is beautiful and although NYIT is expensive, I think its still a great program. I knew a guy who graduated from this program and when I was doing my observation hours, he already had a job offer right before he even graduated.

yeah I didn't really look around the town too much just enough to see the surrounding area cause I got lost lol but it was really nice there. and most programs are somewhere around this price, it just comes with the degree. and that's great I hope we can all be as lucky as him.

hey so I actually spoke to the student housing office today. they said since I applied already for the summer housing (and for the fall/spring) that i'm most likely going to get a single room. they said that the summer semester usually has hardly any students in the dorm so if you apply for it asap i'm sure youll get a single room too. for the fall and spring they said I applied really early and will most likely get a single room. they also said they only put grad students in a suite they never mix with undergrads, and they try their best to put the same graduate majors together in a suite as well. so I was feeling a lot better after that conversation. hopefully this helps you too!

That is good to know, I may look into that as well, and just apply for it, or even maybe try and commute for the summer, depending on what the schedules are..we will see, just trying to save money!

Got accepted today via email!! This has been three years in the making for me with taking prerequisites, volunteering, completing applications and being rejected from schools last year. I'm so happy that at least one school has said yes to me! I interviewed on January 9th with @gina2493. The email says I have to tell them if I will/won't be attending by Feb 6th or they will move on to people on the waitlist. I will accept and bite the bullet and pay the $1500 deposit (yikes) but still wait to hear from other schools in case a cheaper school comes through. Good luck to everyone. Stay positive!!
That is great! Congrats! I know how you feel, this was my second year since I applied right out of college after getting rejected last year as well, but I am happy I have at least one option! I have until March 1st, but I am probably going to pay the deposit as well just so I have this spot as well.

that's how I feel, who knows what the other students in the dorm would be doing all the time when we need to study so much. I've been looking into apartments within 10 miles and they are definitely expensive and i'm not sure how id pay for the rent and everything. I would rather live by myself in an apartment, but a roommate also in the program would be a pretty good idea I think.
Yes, I may either try commuting since it is expensive or look for an apartment with a roommate, I dont know if I want to live by myself 🙂. I definitely will keep looking though!

Congratulations glad to hear you finally heard back!! I'm hoping to hear something back soon since I was in the same interview group as yours.

yeah i'm really curious to see what the schedule will be like. they have 3 summer "cycles" so I can't even imagine what the class schedule will be lol. but yeah definitely try and save money wherever you can!

Hi everyone, I still haven't heard back from nyit and it's been 4 weeks since my interview :/ I tried calling and emailing the department but they didn't answer so I'm waiting to see if they do. Do you think at this point I may be on the waitlist? I'm not sure what's going on :/ I still hope I hear something

I think it's difficult to know what an admissions committee is thinking. You got an interview so you are in a better position than people who haven't gotten an interview. I think you still have a great chance! Stay positive.

I got accepted a few weeks ago, I'll most likely be attending this program since it's one of my top choices. Just waiting to hear back from a few more before i make my final decision!

I'm also wondering what this summer schedule will be like. I know we would be taking 14 credits, do you guys think we take all classes at once from May-August? or would we be taking say one of 2 classes for a month each?

Does anyone maybe know of good areas to live in around NYIT? Or do you know if people maybe live in Hoboken and drive in or something? Im still trying to get an idea where the best place to live would be.

Yeah I know, thank you for the kind words - definitely staying positive and hopeful! 🙂

I live in the area, Long Island in general is pretty expensive unfortunately. If you're ok with the drive, I would look for somewhere in Queens or Brooklyn, it might be a little cheaper

Yes agreed, although it may be a drive Queens is a great option for cheaper living

I didn't realize they had 3 summer cycles but that would be so much better! It would be helpful to be able to focus for a month on specific subjects, hopefully they send something out soon to let us know.

yeah absolutely! I guess we will have to wait until late march to be advised and then register, according to the academic calendar.

Did anyone pay the deposit yet? I know the deadline is March 1st but I saw somewhere that we have 2 weeks since we receive the acceptance package to pay the 1000 dollar deposit.

Did you see that on the school's website? I saw that too but I'm following the instructions on the acceptance email I received from Jessica.

yeah it said by march 1st but I paid right away just to secure my spot. i'm 99% attending unless I get into liu.

also, the total deposit is 1,500 just to make sure you know.

Hi Gina, did you pay the tuition deposit online or in person? I was thinking of paying it online but I don't see the tuition deposit posted on my account.

That's kewl. Is LIU program shorter in length compared to NYIT?

Can I ask why you'd choose LIU over NYIT? I'm just curious, I actually turned down my interview with them once I got into NYIT just because of their price/lengthy program. I also haven't paid the deposit yet, they give us until March 1st so our place is secured until then right?

once I set up my username and whatnot with the directions from the acceptance email, on the "my nyit" student center page you can scroll all the way down and there is an option to pay the deposit there. you have to create your username and password for the my nyit page using the student id number. (I wasn't provided with one until I asked for it).

as for the program length, I really don't know how it exactly compares but I think they're more or less the same.

well as far as price goes, they're both private schools, so I feel like at this point i'm going to have huge loans either way haha. i'm actually going to apply next year for the nyc doe scholarship so hopefully i'll get that and it will cut my loans more than half. the only reason I MIGHT consider going there if I were to be accepted (I still haven't received an interview due to my academic update), is that I can commute very easily there. I live in staten island so taking the ferry over to manhattan and a train a few stops into bk to the school would be a lot easier than dorming (and save money), and also traveling over an hour back home when I need to get home from nyit.

Ah ok gotcha, good luck with LIU! Just so you know, it costs 150k (as opposed to NYIT being 100k) and is 122 credits (as opposed to NYITs 85). I couldn't believe the differences when i found out.

wow! I guess I didn't look into it enough I definitely didn't realize it was so much more money. I appreciate the info haha this is making me care a little less about having to dorm lol.

Hey guys, do you guys know if NYIT gives us out scholarship for the OT program? I'm hoping they gave us something but I have a friend in the nursing program and she told me that all the students in the nursing program got some sort of scholarships. I hope this applies to the OT program as well.

The nursing program is an undergraduate program, the scholarships for undergrad are very generous at NYIT. The grad school scholarships are for $3000 a year , broken up per semester. I think this would apply for the OT program as well.

Wow, thanks for the input. Even though it isn't much, every bit helps so that's very good to know.

I don't know if anyone has filled out FAFSA yet, but since the program starts in the summer, Should we fill out the FAFSA for the 16-17 year?

hey when I got my acceptance packet, I got a letter saying I was receiving the 3,000 per year scholarship. so if you haven't gotten your packet yet then it's possible you'll get one then! also, I've filled out the fafsa already, I was told I had to do it or else I wouldn't be able to accept the scholarship. it was so confusing to do but now that it's done i'm just waiting about a week or so to have nyit I guess set up my account for the fafsa to see if I qualify for any aid. I think either way, though, you need to fill out the fafsa before you register and pay tuition.

Did you figure out when you are supposed to pay the deposit? I'm now confused because I emailed Jessica asking to clarify and I got a vague answer. I was originally going to pay all by March 1st but I don't want to mess anything up and lose my spot. BUT...I'm waiting to hear from other cheaper schools. Do we pay $1,500 by March 1st, or $1,000 two weeks after acceptance (unofficial email or official letter?) then $500 on March 1st.

Also, my balance on my NYIT account says $0. Wha??

the total deposit is 1,500, so I just paid that whole thing at once. you should have that whole deposit done by march 1st or you will lose the spot. it sucks that we can't get the deposit back but at least it's a guarantee of a seat. as far as the account balance i'm not really sure, because mine says my balance is the amount that I paid, so that's a little confusing. maybe call the office of admissions to really clarify that part. the deposit though has to be paid in full by march 1st or they will give your spot to someone on the wait-list.

Thanks Gina! Did you deposit go through immediately or did it take a few days to post?

no problem! I think it went through pretty quickly, I don't exactly know though.

Can someone please tell me that since the program starts this summer, do we have to fill out fafsa for thr 2016/2017 year or we have to file the 2017/2018 year?

Im just gonna pay the deposit. I wanted to wait till March 1st but Im pretty sure im going to this school. It is confusing because my balance said zero also. I think i have to input the tuition deposit myself and just pay it like that.

The way I understand it and because NYIT's program starts in May, I think you have to fill out FAFSA for both years. Also, does anyone know the date we will begin classes?

I figured, I just wanted to make sure. The first day of class is MAY 24th, I asked this during the interview and that's what she told me.

I did the fafsa for the 16/17 year that's what I was told to do; also I was told to do a seasonal loan form i'm kind of confused why but maybe you should find out if you need to do one too

ok I will call them tomorrow about the form. where do you obtain the seasonal loan form and who told you that?? By the way, I called up NYIT financial AID office today to inquire about the federal Perkins loan. She told me that due to the funding cuts or whatever, NYIT will not be offering the federal Perkins loans for this year. I hope she is wrong on this, because that's a real bummer.

what kind of loan is that anyway?

I called the financial aid office about my fafsa, and when I start buying text books how do they go about being paid for, and they said that I should be doing a seasonal loan and that will reimburse the cost of the books. I was a little confused but it seemed like that's what everyone does so i'm going to follow up and call again. I got the loan request form on the nyit website on the financial aid tab.

Ok so Federal Perkins loan is a low interest federal loan (5% interest) and its available for undergrad and graduate students. In these types of loans the school is actually the lender so we would eventually pay back the school after we graduate of course. The maximum your allowed to borrow is $8000 per year.
