Does anyone know when the white coat ceremony is this year? Is it during orientation week? Is it later in the year? I'm trying to schedule a time when my family can come out and visit me and i'm trying to use the white coat ceremony as the time to do it. Thanks all.

im not 100% sure, but i believe the White Coat Ceremony is on Convocation, which this year will be on October 1, 2004.

damn, there are more people on SDN going to nymc next year than i thought... hopefully i'll be joining you guys.

What do you guys think of the honors/high pass/pass/fail grading system? Good system, bad system, thoughts, opinions?

dunno know the grade breakdown will be but lets hope its not a re-labeled traditional A= 90 Honors, B= 80 HP, C= 70 P system

...i knew i should've paid more attention on interview day!

Hey dankev --- I know what you meant. Northwesterners have their own kind of sensibility, right? Get ready for a less laid-back lifestyle . . . I guess that goes for everyone. Let's all try to live it up this summer !

Amen to that!!

does anyone know where the info is for the specs required for a new computer, ive looked all over the nymc site and my packets and nada.... also, what kind of tech gadgets do you guys/gals think would be helpful if anything... those pda/cellphone/organizer all-in-one look excellent but would they be of any use to us

sidenote: is it just me or does the nymc website site suck abhorridly in terms of site layout and direction....and no class or student webpages??

anyone know the schedule for orientation week? I have to fly out of town on friday and I want to know what time I will be able to leave.

About orientation, I found somewhere, the schedules of old orientations. It seems fairly relaxed. But, I think it is really wierd that they don't already have a schedule online for us, and why does it seem like they made the webpage in 2001 and haven't added or updated it since then?

About loans etc. I finally got fed up and called the financial aid office. They told me everything was complete, (hadn't sent me anything about that) and that I should log on again to the online application and it would open to step 2, which is did. Then you approve your loans and get more papers to sign and turn in.

Computer wise, it doesn't seem like they have any reqs. It seems pretty layed back, just a computer that works, and can be on the internet. Just my take on things.

Just wondering if anybody else is going to be living off campus. I just got an apartment in White Plains. Wondering where other people are finding apartments.

what are the cons of living on campus?

hey, i just got my room assignment today. Grasslands II 1513. Anyone here gonna be my suitemate??

Hey Guys,
I'm in the process of signing a lease in White Plains too, I 'm just waiting to get board approval. I really like the place but I hope that traffic won't be too bad in the mornings while driving to campus.

so excited to find this thread... congrats to you all of you and i see ya come aug 2nd! btw, ill be living off campus too (from pelham, ~20min) and im hoping it wont be a major problem... here's hoping the traffic cooperates.... have a fantastic july everyone!

Room Assignment : Grasslands II, Apt 1205. I can't believe that school is going to start so soon! I'm so excited to meet you guys!!

😀 Hey y'all, a Happy 4th to everyone! I am very excited to be meeting up and starting this year off right . . . I can see that a lot of us might be off-campus, but for those of us who will be living on campus -- is a car necessary for the area (getting groceries, etc.)? I think that would be my biggest expense if I have to get one. What have you heard?

A car is indispensable. However, KNOWING someone with a car is almost as good. 😀

hey zwei, you got a car, right? 😉 -

....say, anyone on the westcoast recieve there housing info... im curious to know who my suitemates are as well -- also, for those who have recieved it, does the sheet provide names and contact info of our suitemates or just the room number

The sheet does provide names and phone numbers as well as addresses, without the state. But they give you the zip code so you can look up the state if you so desire.

so i just called nymc. they said i'm on the waitlist for oncampus housing. i think i'd rather live offcampus than in a furnished oncampus apartment, just because im older and have accumulated all the furniture i need. since im not from around the area, could you guys give me some suggestions as to where i should start looking for housing off campus? thanks for the help in advance!

Now you'll have me a lil freaked out about housing. I thought most students got housing at Valhalla, what is this wait list stuff? Should I be worried? I will call the office in the morning but man, that could a a twist to things.

i wouldnt get too worried if i were you. i was accepted late, sometime in mid-may and only put unfurnished apartment on my housing application. when i called housing, i was told that there were 16 people on the unfurnished apartment waitlist. when i asked if getting off the waitlist was a 50/50 chance, the woman told me "i think you should be more concerned with whether you can get on campus housing at all."

in any case, i've been looking on craigslist for off campus housing. anyone else have suggestions as to how i should find an apartment?

Hey, does anyone know if we should buy this air conditioner for $419?!? I mean, for 6000 BTU, I have seen better air con units that go for $150. What in the world am I buying? Does anyone know if it's hard to install your own unit due to some weird building code or something? Any current students' responses would be appreciated...Zwei? idq1i? Others? Any suggestions?

aight.. like you said, nothing to worry bout. Apt 1113 hear i come! i remember students saying that you can always get a cheaper one when you get there. that does seem a little pricey, $413 for AC!

I personally am trying to decide on the renters insurance, anyone have any experience either way?

just outta curiousity, how hot does it actually get in valhalla? anyone from areas of the 90-100s care to make a comparison?

and i agree with everyone else, 400 bucks is way too much for a 6000 btu aircon, u can easily get one for around 100 bucks at home depot

Home Depot Prices

DON'T BUY THE AC. You'll definitely want one, but students are selling used air conditioners all the time. Also, you can get cheaper, new ones from places like Sam's Club and whatnot. No need to drop $400 down.

Yay! Thanks for the advice on how not to waste money on air conditioners! I'm trying to spend as little money as possible here, practicing for my next several years as a dirt poor penny pinching med student (then the same type of resident)!!!!

I got my housing info yesterday (I live in Ca). I'm staying in Grassland 1516. I'm assuming this is Grassland II because I have 3 roomates, but it doesn't say. Anyone else's actually say Grassland II?

Looks like room 1415 for me. Must be Grasslands II because it's a 4-person shared apt. what about the athletic facilities -- sufficient for everyone to use? What do you think M2's?

that is the one major flaw about nymc. no athletic facilities. at least no basketball court and i dont think much of a cardio room.

Untrue. There is actually an outdoor basketball court which the students use all the time, when the weather is nice. If you want to play ball indoors, you have access to the gym at SUNY Purchase, I believe, but you'll need a car to get there. The cardio room has one stair master, two or three bikes, two treadmills, and an elliptical. The weights leave something to be desired, but you can definitely still lift there.

anyone else on the housing wait list besides me? another wait list. great.

im also on the housing waitlist. i called again this week and was told that i was the second person/first male on the unfurnished oncampus housing waitlist. since nothing opened up this past week, i was told to call again mid-late next week. im trying to figure out what i can bring and whether i should get movers or not. obviously, this is impossible since i dont even know where im moving yet!!

What's up guys!

Has anyone taken a look at the first semester's statement yet? Did you notice that tuition is $18775! Tuition was supposed to be $36,100 (after the increase) for the year, making it $18,050 per semester. The only explaination I can come up with is that they will charge us $18775 for the first semester and $17325 for the second semester due to the fact that the second semester is one month longer, but that's a huge difference.

Another question... what's the $726 for "fees" included in the budget. I will probably call on Monday to find the answers to these questions, but if someone already knows, please let me know.

On a lighter note, anyone going to be in Grasslands II. I'll be in 1415!

I don't know as far as the budget goes and stuff. But as far as loans are concerned, if anyone has a clue to this question, that would be wonderful. After you accept the loan packages, say that you get off the waitlist at another school and go there, would the loans be cancelled, would you still have to pay them back? I'm just hesitating in accepting them b/c I'm not 100% sure about where I'm going yet (only 99% sure). If anyone has a clue about what would happen in this situation, please clue me in! Thanks!!

Yeah, I'll be in 1415, too, BenzBe -- I'm the guy from Seattle. Florida? Or one of the California guys?

i still have no housing....im first on the unfurnished housing waitlist, but ive been in this position for two weeks now. im hesitant to put a deposit down on an apartment with two weeks to go. but if nothing opens up by friday, when housing gets an updated list from admissions, that'll leave me with a week to find an apartment and move!! any suggestions?!

You should talk to Fin. Aid for sure but most school's have a deadline before they start charging you tuition. What I mean is how much money you can get back, before 1st wk. almost all of it. Then starts going down from there. But, I think financial aid office are helpful at most schools. Just talk to both schools, fin. aid office.

I am the guy from So Cal.

Hello All,
To all those who are thinking about getting off campus housing. Be advised it doesn't always wrap up so fast.

I started looking for off campus housing in early July and I still haven't sealed the deal. Getting approval to move in can really be outrageous. They wanted a ton of documents (photocopies of my drivers license and social security card) banking account numbers for both me and my father and a letter of reference from my previous landlord (my personal favorite). They also needed all my personal info on their personal stationary because they would not accept faxes or photocopies. They also needed my W2s and my father's tax hx. Who would have thought a one bedroom for 1100 would be so difficult to nail down?

You know many time during my premed amcas struggles I often wondered what was the point of all this crap (sending in transcripts, letters of reference, etc.) but now I understand. All that was to better prepare me for finding housing in White Plains...yes, of course it all makes sense now.

Alright, here's the deal with the whole tuition thing that I posted about earlier.
I contacted the Bursar's office and they told me that they charged us more for the first semester and less for the second semester because the second semester is longer. This semester's tuition includes the fees that appears on the tuition, so I guess we'll be charged about $18,050 for the second semester's tuition.
Let me know if you guys hear anything different.

Hey Guys,
NYMC sent me a bill a few weeks ago I guess, but it didn't reflect any of the scholarship or loan money that they are giving me. Does anyone know when they will send updated bills with all that stuff?

I got an updated statement last week (im from CA) with a statement date of July 8th. On there it shows our anticipated aid with scholarship info, stafford loans (both sub and unsub amounts) for the entire year. It breaks up scholarship and stafford amounts in half for fall and spring. It also lists charges for the fall room/rent, fall tuition, fall health insurance and a fall telecommunication fee (i think this is for on campus only). But strangely enough, nothing listed for spring charges (so i dont really know what the actual total year ending cost will be by looking at the statement-- but estimates would put it around 45K for on campus housing+tuition/fees+health insurance).

As for reimbursement checks, I think we recieve them on the day we register, aug 2nd.

Anyways, enjoy your last bits of summer freedom and see ya'll in 2 wks!!

I'm headed to Valhalla this coming August, too. Anyone from Washington State? What have you heard is recommended to bring to the furnished rooms? Does anyone know?

I'm from Washington--Seattle Area. I'm having the biggest dilemma about what to bring, especially since I'm flying there.

The Grasslands II rooms have a desk (attached mini-bookshelf), a four drawer drawer, a really uncomfortable bed (you will have back pains by the year's end), a crappy chair, and a spacious closet.

The kitchen has a mircowave, full-size fridge, stove, oven, etc.

The common area has a sofa, a dining table and some chairs... that's all I can remember.

You will need:

1. Lamps. The room has no lighting, but there is a light switch.
2. A wall AC unit. You can pick one up at Sam's Club or Target or somewhere.
3. Trash cans (one for the bathroom as well).
4. Probably a better chair, since the one they give you sucks.
5. A coax cable for cable TV.
6. A phone.
7. A car.

Of course, a computer, TV, DVD Player, X Box, etc. Bring an ethernet cable.

I put another desk into my room. Also bought a nightstand and something to hold my TV, VCR, and DVD player.

It would probably be a good idea to get together and invest in some cleaning supplies, like a vaccuum, mop and such. The cleaning crew doesn't do a good job cleaning the rooms before move-in, plus you'll need this stuff anyways throughout the year.

It's probably not necessary to bring this stuff with you, as there is a Sam's Club nearby, Bed Bath and Beyond closeby, a mall, a Target, supermarket and such within a couple minutes by car. A car is necessary, unfortunately.
