All of your aid should appear on the statement as of 7/8/04. If the aid has not been distributed yet, it should still appear as anticipated. My scholarship appeared as anticipated aid, but when I called them, they told me that it was just distributed. The people at the Bursar's seem somewhat clueless about things... for example they don't know the exact budget or tuition and fees. The lady at Bursar's told me to stick with the budget that is posted on NYMC's website... I'll be keeping a close eye on the second semester's statement to make sure things add up.

NYMC sent me a bill a few weeks ago I guess, but it didn't reflect any of the scholarship or loan money that they are giving me. Does anyone know when they will send updated bills with all that stuff?

While being a Mariner's Fan (although I'm ashamed to say that this season) prevents me from fully supporting the A's, I'll definitely be rooting for them over the yankees (west coast pride and all). However I think I might go for a more silent support tactic.

Not at all, though Id be the first to dive into McCovey cove during a battle of the bay game and support my giants but ill still support the oakland green and im all out for some Giambi heckling . Oh, and I'll be the loud one with my big A's foam finger and my monster hat shouting Yanks suck. All you yanks fans just wait and see, A's will dominate and Giambi will go hitless (and hopefully he doesnt whine about some parasite for his sorry hitting, the grubbin sellout). Just wait and see.

Looks like we don't get to see the A's after all. The orientation email says the Yanks game is against Toronto, so I checked the Yankee schedule. Toronto it is. The NYMC website still says it's the A's, though.

On a related note, I was a little surprised to find out the pub night, cruise, and ball games aren't free. I guess I assumed that >18k bill included them. Since I'm not much of a drinker, hate dressing up, and won't get to see the A's anyway, I think I'm going to pass on all three.

Who's up for playing ultimate frisbee those evenings? 👍

I definately agree. Ya figure our 18K tab would pick up for $90 worth of events for orientation. The dinner cruise sounds interesting but soccer, some utimate frisbee, and a bbq sound just as fun as a damn yanks 😴 😴 vs. jays game, actually prolly more.

Anyways, see you all in a week and I thought movein was Saturday?? Hmm...

Hey, just wondering if anyone could tell me the deal with microscopes? It seems that I would save a lot of $$$ by getting the school microscope than renting from a private vendor. They say the school's scopes are not as good, exactly HOW inferior are they? Are they ok, or is the $$$ savings not even worth it b/c you go blind trying to focus them? Just wondering. I can deal with a mediocre scope, as long as it's not just like a set of magnifying glasses or something. Thanks for any input!

I've been renting the school's microscope, and I think it's fine. You're not going to be attached at the hip to your microscope for the majority of your med school career, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

They've done some recabling of the Grasslands II buildings, and it appears that Housing will no longer be providing the ethernet cables as they did last year. So, be sure to bring an RJ-45.

Haha. It's just the standard ethernet cable you probably used back in your undergrad or if you have a DSL connection at home. Last year, Housing gave us the cable because it was not the standard cable. But, recently they've recabled all of the Grasslands II rooms, and now they're saying to bring the standard cable (if you don't have one, go to any radioshack, bestbuy, compusa and just ask for an ethernet cable) because they won't be providing it. I've seen these cables come in a variety of colors, but none in hot pink yet. 🙁

You will soon learn that the internet connection at NYMC is one of the most unreliable you have ever experienced. Good times.

Does NYMC have its own zip code? I thought individual zip codes were reserved only for towns, cities, or really really fat people.

If they want us to use C++ to write a program that calculates the probability of a medical student's head exploding as a function of the number of hours they spend studying review material...well, then I don't know what I'm going to do.

Technically, Valhalla isn't even a town or a city. It's a "hamlet." No joke. In any case, I think all Valhalla has is NYMC and the Valhalla Post Office. There's an Applebee's about 2 minutes from campus, which I think may technically be in the next town over, Elmsford.

Don't worry about that. During the first or second day, you spend hour-long rotations through the library, then with upperclassmen, then in the computer lab. In the computer lab they show you the school's email system, intranet, how to log on, and so on. I think the "computer assignment" was just filling out an online survey in the computer lab of how the orientation was going.

That said, I am interested in this program you've mentioned. We've lost three or four students so far. Tragic. Their heads exploded on the way from Grasslands to the BSB for class while reading BRS Gross Anatomy. Lord knows how many hours their heads had been buried in that book. It would be wise for you 1st years to study this probability function well.
