I was wondering what you guys thought about NYMC.. What are the positive features of this medical school? I heard there is a juvenile facility somewhere on campus and a psychiatric facility nearby... Ppl I have talked to, dint like the school very much, but they do not go to the school. Is there anyone out there who could tell me why they would want to go to NYMC?
Its a beautiful campus, with student housing across the street from the class building.
The anatomy lab is awesome, with skylights and great ventilation.
Brand new beautiful children's hospital, with some of the most amazing facilities I've ever seen. Doesn't look at all like a hospital (10 ft tall aqarium in main entrance, mini golf outside, childrens exhibits with dolls/baseball/etc everywhere. And every room is private with a flat screen TV and gaming console in every room. If I'm going to treat kids - I want to treat them there - It was absolutely incredible!!
Choice of staying in Valhalla (suburb) or going to Manhattan for 3/4th year rotations.
Free clinic opportunities.
Traditional lecture based curriculum with patient contact and practice in first 2 years, including proceptorship with mentor primary care physician.
Nice learning environment from what I saw.
Above average board scores.
Yes, there is a high security prison nearby. (I've heard the juvenile/psych thing too, but the student tour guide said they didn't have those that he knew of). But the whole campus is really well lit, lots of security and all the students I spoke to agreed they felt completely safe walking around the campus.
So I think there are lots of good reasons to apply there - but if you don't, then by all means leave more spots for the rest of us.
