Hi all! I’m currently trying to narrow down my options between these two schools. I think I know what the general consensus usually is but it helps me to make pros/cons because I genuinely think both schools are great options for me. I’m a NY resident hoping to eventually match in Boston and am not really sure what I want to specialize in yet but could see myself doing IM or family medicine. I was previously leaning towards NYMC but I went to stony brook accepted students day and was very impressed with the program and charmed by the location. Both schools have great match lists which isn’t helping me figure out my choice lol. Appreciate y’all’s input 🙂

NYMC

Pros:

- close to family, would live at home (15min commute) making COA similar and I wouldn’t have to worry about regular life things (cooking/cleaning/etc.) during school
- rotate in hospitals in Westchester and NYC, more diversity in patient population and locations
- closer to mountains and rock climbing (these are huge hobbies of mine and they’re important to my mental health)
- closer to friends in nyc
- somewhat easier and cheaper to get to Boston where SO is

Cons:
- mix of in house and NBME exams
- multiple rotation locations =variable commute times
- larger class size
- friend who goes there said sometimes there’s no room to sit at the mandatory lectures ??

Stony brook:

Pros:
- higher than national average step 1+2 performance
- earlier clinical phase than NYMC
- students seem very happy with administration’s responsiveness to feedback
- NBME exams
- true P/F during preclinical phase
- “wellness week” (time off) between clerkships
- all rotations done in same hospital or Hamptons making commute predictable
- I love my parents and think living at home could be super nice but also like my independence and am used to living with housemates for the last 4 years
- beach 🏖️
- In state tuition (but would have housing costs)

Cons:
- farther from nyc and Boston but I think the ferry +amtrak from Bridgeport might make the commute pretty similar to head to Boston
- farther from mountains and closest climbing gym is 40 min away; but I heard a new one is supposed to open up 5 min away soon?
- less diverse patient population and no city rotations
