I would have to go with NYMC. My decision is based on my personal preferences. Althought UVM and NYMC will provide you with an excellent medical education, I think you will get more of a diverse patient population at NYMC, mainly because many of the NYMC affiliate hospitals are located throughout NYC. NYMC is located is a small town, yet you are 30mins away from NYC. It looks like you would get the best of both worlds. Although NYMC and Touro have an affiliation, that doesn't mean that the quality of education will decrease. NYMC now has more resouces and more money because of the affiliation, which has many benefits to the school and students. If you would like more exposure to practicing medicine in a small town where primary care is emphasized, I would probably pick UVM. However, if you want more of a diverse patient population, pick NYMC.

Either way, you can't go wrong! Good luck

Don't pick NYMC because it is 30 mins from NYC. Trust me, you aren't going to have that much free time in medical school to care about where you live.

I'm not sure that the patien population is all that diverse at NYMC.

Uvm definitely has some diversity, though. Lots of immigrant populations live in the Burlington area, if I'm remembering correctly from my interview a year ago.

In addition, in ANY regional hospital you're going to get a diverse group in terms of coverage because people will come from all over the state.

Also, don't forget that UVM has contracts with hospitals in Florida, Connecticut, and I believe one in Maine where you can also do rotations thus providing you with even more diverse populations.

Two words: Lake. Champlain.

That is all.

UVM may have a better reputation, but then NYMC has the access to NYC for rotations, isn't on a huge undergrad campus, etc.

what are people's thoughts on this?
