Hello Everyone,
I hope everyone is getting excited for a great experience at an incredible institution! If you have been accepted to NYUCD and you plan on attending then this message might be useful. Moving into NYC, especially from another state could be very stressful. I moved from out of town and found it very difficult to find a new place to move into. NYUCD has minimal (very minimal) dorm space for dental students, and the dorms tend to be overly expensive for the space that they provide you with. A D3 that I knew coming into NYC gave me the number of a broker that works specifically with incoming NYU freshman and he was extremely helpful. He toured me through the 3 major apartment complexes that the majority of dental students live in. They include: Stuyvesant town, Waterside, and Kips Bay Court.
I chose Stuyvesant town and my roommates and I are extremely happy with the decision we made. The location is great, and the rent is cheap (relatively speaking in terms of typical manhattan prices). When you sign up they give you a $500 american express gift card and 2 months free rent for the first year of the lease. There's a quad in the center of the complex where young adults sun bathe and chill on warm days. You get the feeling that you are in a college community. Not to mention its one of the only places in manhattan that has excessive trees lining the property. Their deals can't be beat for the space they offer (very large apartments) and for their location (5-12 blocks away from school depending on what avenue you're on).
Waterside was the second best option in my opinion. The prices tend to be around the same as stuy town (maybe $80-100 cheaper per month), however, the rooms are significantly smaller. It's about 3 blocks away from school which is a big plus, however, its on the other side of the river and you need to cross a bridge to get over to the manhattan side (gets freezing cold and windy in the winter). My friends that live there tell me that they don't feel like they live in manhattan (which could be a good thing to some), its secluded.
Kips bay was my least favorite of the three. The prices are high and the apartments are not that great. The location is just as good as Stuy town, but its further inland (2nd ave). The rooms have more of a 'dorm feel'.
Please note that this is how my roommates and I felt and that we know multiple students that live in both waterside and kips bay that are very happy. If you have any further questions about anything housing related, feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]. Good luck to all!!!
