Hi 🙂

I was accepted to NYU dental school, and i sent the deposite of 1,500$ few days ago. i just received an email from their admission office saying that my deposite went for "deferred admission of 2009". 😕

i applied for fall 2008 and my admission letter says i was accepted for 2008... so i am not sure what to think... i tried calling them but their office was closed and will be closed till monday.

did anyone recieve such an email? could it be a mistake at all? its kind of scary for me because NYU is where i have always wanted to go ><

thank you for your help!

This is soo nerve-racking. I really hope its a typo. They are closed till monday which absolutely sucks. Cant you go into hibernation mode till Monday to get your mind off of this?! I am sorry to hear that you are going through this, dont panic.... do you have other acceptances. I am sure its a typo, dont worry. NYU is known to make stupid mistakes like that.

Take it easy and let us know how it goes.

I hope we don't have another Stony Brook issue.

If your letter says you were admitted to this year's class, no way in hell can they automatically postpone your admission, without your consent. Plus, I find it VERY hard to believe that NYU is full in January.

That's bizarre. I hope it isn't what it sounds like. When I deferred last year for a spot in this year's class, I received a formal letter from the dean of admissions, and email and a voicemail from her before it was all solidified. It's hard to believe that they would randomly select you for deferred admission for 2009. If that IS the case, I would demand a full year's scholarship on the house!

Hopefully its a mistake. My email just said that they received the first deposit to hold my seat in the program and a reminder to to send the second one by april 1st to secure the seat

microserf, your stats are good.. I hope u applied to cdn schools too!!!!

What date did you send it, and where in the country did you send it from? The deadline was Jan 15; if you missed it, they might have bumped you a year...

Hey microserf123 r u still at UBC or did u already grad?
Im in biochem and man i gotto give u props, thats some GPA u maintained!! I think u got a shot at UBC dent??

Ne ways its gud to meet a fellow biochem grad!

microserf and jazzyb:

i just had a question about UBC. do they take into account the difficulty of your program? a friend of mine goes to UBC and he told me that general science is considered the lowest of the low in terms of programs. at the UofA anyone trying to get into pharm, dent, med most likely does it through general sciences. do you guys think this will affect my chances?

hey dackmonkey dont worry you shud hear somethin from UBC real soon!! They already sent out the first wave of rejections last week. So from here on in they will send out the rest of their decisions.

As for the degree.. ya ive heard the same thing, ppl do say that they look at the difficulty of degree but when u go talk to the admissions ppl, they say they dont care wat degree ure in. But i know that for some reason biochem is looked at highly.. so idk..
Another big selection factor is carving score. Ill quote a friend from class "UBC pops a boner over 23+ carving score"..lol

Hey Dackmonkey, I don't think you should worry too much. I personally have never heard anything about taking the difficulty of the program into account. So I really can't offer you an opinion about that.

jazzyb: I'm still at UBC but I finished my Biochem degree 3 years ago. I'm currently in the process of finishing up by MSc in Experimental Medicine right now.

thanks for your replies guys. sorry OP i didn't mean to hijack your thread! i have two sets of DAT scores i sent to UBC. one with 18/19/26 and the other with 23/20/20 for AA/PAT/carving. neither is great alone, but hopefully the 26 carving catches their eye haha.

I'm surprised that they're open on monday - it's a holiday!

Aight buddy!! Its official. You should hear from UBC either tomorrow or monday. UBC Med just sent its stuff out today so tomorrow is dental time. UBC gives out 100 interviews and short lists 40. SO hang in there and gimme some good news as soon as u get that email!!

HAve a gud one!!👍

What was the average gpa of admitted students last year, for ubc?

Well it was 83% so im guessing close to 3.6 or something, not really sure.

oh i thought it was gonna be via snail mail. regardless, we can keep each other posted.

dackmonkey did u apply to U of A. 90% or so of their spots are allocated for alberta residents.

jazzyb i thought 83% was more like 3.8, but im really not sure. Just what ive heard.

yeah i did apply to UofA. how does a 3.8 equal an 83%? how do they convert grades exactly?

Maybe that 83% is a mark average. I mean, you could have a mark average of above 80% and have a gpa of below 3.7 (roughly an 80% on the scale).

U mite b right! i know they take an average of all the applicants they accepted and take and average of their overall grades to get this % mark.

Dack: im sorry, but UBC med sent its stuff out thursday and apprently that over loaded some of the servers, so UBC dent has decided to hold off till "late this coming week"

are we talking interviews or rejections?

Any decision. Interviews and rejections all get mailed together. Unless u got less than 12 in any section of the canadian DAT then u should have already got a rejection. But im guessing thats far from your problems.. so ure fine!!

Hang in there mate

So ummm Jazzyb
Just how are you finding this stuff out about UBC??
Do you know someone on the inside?

Is it normal to get your acceptance letter....say on yesterday the 18th and have till the 31st to have your deposit to a school (NYU?) I mean really I only get 13 days to decide, find, and have the deposit there? I thought we got 30 days for those accepted before Feb 1st!
