They have a letter grading system.

By the way, 100+ international program(IP??) students join D2.

Are they graded together on the competiton basis? (Or separately?)

graded together as in take the same academic classes and exams yes, but ranked separately. So you end up with a class rank # out of 4 year DDS students only

It makes sense. Thanks!

Btw, is the competition fierce? Considering the total number of D-students at NYU, it must be???????

And, I also want to know if test style is T/F, multiple quizz only. (And, pretty standardized test type like NDBE ---> Probably, to make their students competitive during actual NDBE test)

Additional input will be highly appreciated!!

Btw, I heard retention rate at NYU is very high at NYU interview.🙂

Yeah, I remember them saying that. Also, they said that if you score in the bottom 50% on a midterm that they'll call you in to talk to the dean. If I go to NYU, I intend to be in the top 50%.. lol

but, was it 50%?

Does it mean 50%of students or scores below 50?

Some people said studying at NYU is tough, and D-students can be kicked out easily. And, that thread created some sort of fears to all NYU applicants a few months ago.

BTW, does anybody know how many international students are at NYU?
a. 4yr DDS
b. After merging with those people in International program. 🙂

The exams are multiple choice and in block format (all subjects grouped together to simulate NBDE part I).

The international student class is about 100/year.

Retention rate for the past 2 or 3 years hover at 97-98%. Most of the kids in my year that got the boot definitely deserved it, in fact I thought there were a lot of people that ought to have gotten the boot but somehow they came through....

ill just add this as a D1, there are weekly quizzes and exams to keep you on your toes so you wont cram for the combined midterms. Some of these quizzes count a lot towards your GPA, so you cant just blow them off. The combined midterms are a pain to study for.

Once you get here, you will see why a few students dont make it to the 2nd year. It's because they slack off and barely do any studying. Ive already seen a few. Some of them just dont care. If you do what your supposed to and study well, you will be fine, the school isnt looking to axe people. Only 2-3 people didnt continue on from D1 last year, so its not the 10-20% that is thrown around over here.

NYUCD is very competitive but in a friendly and fair way. Everyone tries to help each other out and wind up making life time friends at the school. Here is an e-mail from NYUCD's faculty addressing rumors:

Hello!

You have now gotten through almost two months of dental school. How quickly
the time is going! I am very impressed by each of you, and I know you all
have been working very hard. I want to wish you the best on your midterms
for GDS and Basic Sciences...I am sending lots of good vibes your way! 🙂

I have been asked by numerous students about rumors about the school
dismissing large numbers of students. I want to assure you that this is
totally false and not the way NYUCD operates. The truth is that last year
we lost 3 students in the school, which means that 99.8% of students have
continued in the program. This is an extremely low percentage and something
that I am very proud of. We (your instructors, myself, Dean Palatta - all of
us) are behind you and believe in you. You are here because you have
demonstrated superior intellect and talent, and we believe that each of you
have the potential to become a great dental professional.

I understand how overwhelming and stressful exams can be. I encourage you
to help and support each other. Reach out to your mentors - they are very
enthusiastic about helping you succeed. I am away at a conference - in
fact, I am speaking at an international conference in Canada about how proud
I am of working with NYUCD students and the great success we have had in the
areas of academic performance and student retention. And even though I am
away, if I can help you, email me and I will my best to respond as quickly
as I can.

I look forward to hearing about your success on the midterms when I return
on Monday. Happy studying! And I'll keep sending lots of good vibes your
way! 🙂

By the way, I remember those few students actually transferred to another institution or had different reason for quitting the school. Conclusively, they are rare, anyway.

However, I believe at least a few students exist at all institution who are struggling their studies. When it comes to think about NYU, I just worried if so many students have been kicked out, so there must some reason for that. Now~ that's not a big issue!!

WOW~ 100 international students per year?

That's a lot already, and almost 1/3+. Are u talking about only 4yr DDS students?

It doesn't make sense, though! As 150+ international students are coming in D2, the total number should be at least 170+.

Above all, I wonder how many Korean international students are there.

Btw, I didn't know that there are so many internation students attending NYU. It's really amazing news~~

One more thing about NYU is.....
Does NYU have the biggest size of body of international students?

Sounds they have even more international students than Loma Linda University.

Anyway, I know majority of NYU student body is comprised of Asians. So they are number 1 in consideration of international student admission?

if you are wondering about the korean stuent population at the school, they have a korean student dental association (KSDA), so its pretty big
