Are any of you NYUCD c/o 2006 guys as confused as I am looking for areas to live in NYC? I've seen many threads about housing/NYU and thought it would be nice to centalize all of our thoughts, concerns, and questions here in this 1 thread instead of trying to search all over SDN.

I really want to be walking distance to school and won't even mind paying upwards of $2000/month to do so. However, every place that I think would work out has an application income requirement of 40 times the rent! (Which, of course, I don't qualify). Or, if you have a "guarantor", they have to make 80 times the rent! I don't know anyone that makes that kind of money. How do you get around this! Is craigslist the only way? Does anyone know how to get around this obstacle besides craigslist?

I've ruled out living in dorms since I am married and they don't have family housing...

So, I've been forced to look outside of the Murray Hill, Grammercy, Kips Bay area. I've been looking at New Jersey, Upper East Side, East Village, and places near the "L" train. Even still, many places have those income requirements and many places use "brokers". I was told to avoid brokers if at all possible. Did anyone here use brokers and had a positive experience?

Please post ALL the resources you know about getting housing in NYC!!! If you have specific apartments/landlords, please post! If you have websites, please post! If you have other ideas besides the ones mentioned above, please post! Any help from current NYUCD students who went through this headache please post! 🙂 👍

I didn't go through any of this headache. I showed up with a suitcase and a backpack, lived in the interview hotel + a temporary weekly sublet for bout 10 days, and then started searching once I got here. Don't be scared off about the whole New York thing, it's not that hard.

I recommend you looking on craigslist for sublets or roommate wanted. You can find some great deals.

The apartments are really expensive near NYUCD. Do you guys think we can get enough loan to cover it? Man, we are talking approx. 22000 dollars per year on rent. Isn't that kinda crazy?

Actually, you bring up a good point about loans! For those who take out loans for living expenses, how often do you get a loan check? When did you receive your first loan check so you can start paying rent? It would be so nice if you got all upfront but I know the financial aid office probably won't let it happen.

Thanks!

I think they told that we get it in September, and I understood that you get all of it at once (minus school tuition)

Oh that would be nice! Then you'll have more power to get the apartment you want... I'll just say, here I'll pay you one year's rent all upfront! 😀

it's double post
Also I'd appreciate if somebody could clarify this- School estimates that we would need 22000 for housing and only around 5000 for personal expenses, so how people do afford to spend 2000 per month for rent? Do you have some savings or you get more private loans or parents should support you? I really want to live close to school but if I get only 27000 per year I don't see how can I spend more than 1000 and I think even this might be hard for me. Everything is very expensive in Manhattan including food, so I really just don't get it how people manage to do it with such limited loan amount.

I was also told you get one fat check in the beginning of each semester. Time to learn money management. 😀

Well, I guess you take out more private loans... I'm not sure. But, I think people do what they have to do. If you're single, lots of people room together to share the costs. Some people move out where it's cheaper in the $1200 to $1400 range. I'm married, so I'll have my loan checks plus my wife's income. I figure, my loans will cover rent and living costs. Everything she makes will be gravy. 🙂
