NYU interview 10/23

First off, I am a new member on this forum (I've been lurking for about a year but finally decided to make an account) so if this thread is not allowed, please forgive me.

I have an interview at NYU on 10/23. For anyone who has an interview on that date or has had an interview at NYU, I was wondering how did you get from NYU to the airport? I got an email saying that my day would end at 1:30. My flight is at 4:45 Newark Airport. That is a lot of time and I am considering using a shuttle or cab but I have heard that shuttles/cabs can be up to an hour late in NYC and can take forever to go to the airport, and some people even end up missing their flight 😱

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

"If you're departing from NYC Penn Station or Newark, take NJ TRANSIT or Amtrak to Newark Liberty International Airport Station. It takes about five minutes to get from AirTrain to the train platforms and between seven and 11 minutes to get to your terminal, depending on the terminal."

I thought about taking one of those shuttles, but most of them seemed unreliable, so I just took a taxi.

I would recommend the shuttle just for cost wise. Shuttle is like 10-13 dollars vs 20+ for taxi. I would take a taxi only if you only got 1-1.5 hour left to make to it to the airport.

I had a shuttle leave from Grand Central Terminal at 1:30 for my flight and I got to the airport by 2:30 for my 4:00 pm flight so they give you a rounded estimate but it's really not that bad. Also, my NYU day ended at 12:30 rather than 1:30.

What also works is asking anyone at the interview if they are going to the airport so you can split cab fare, which might make taking a taxi worth it.

Yes, I know. The cost is what attracts me to the shuttle (I've calculated it will take around $20 whereas the taxi might be $50+). The only thing that worries me is if I might miss my flight. That's a greater risk financially. I also don't want to risk waiting until interview day to ask for splitting cab fare. At my Louisville interview, out of the 20 people in my group, nobody took a taxi! Everyone left the day after. I hadn't reserved a shuttle so I ended up taking a taxi by myself 😡

Would you say that it is okay for me to leave earlier? I know the interviews are in the morning, but can the interviewees skip lunch and leave around noon?

Thank you so much for this. I will look into it. I just hope I don't get lost or confused. This is my first time in busy NYC.

I just got back from NYC and definitely recommend taking Super Shuttle. It cost me $25 (with tip included), was completely safe and reliable. I booked it online the night before to let them know what time to pick me up.

I don't know if you are leaving straight from NYU, but if you are, tell the super shuttle people to pick you up in front of the Marcel at Gramercy hotel (its literally 3 blocks from the school) and I think it is cheaper if they pick you up from a hotel versus an address. Also, I had concerns that they would stop to pick up other people, but the campus is right next to that tunnel (no idea what its called) that takes you to the freeway (long island expressway?) to get to the airport. Thus, I was the last person to be picked up before heading to the airport.

Excellent! Thank you so much. The shuttle sounds so much more attractive now. Also was it okay for people to leave a little early (before 1:30)? I was going to skip lunch and just go (I'm assuming this would be around 1:00).

Yes, it's totally fine. Our tour ended relatively early (around 12:15) so you may even have time to stay for lunch. If not, you can skip lunch, or grab it to go!

Take the NJ transit. It is easy. You just go to penn station and all the information is there. It is like 5 bucks. Don't take the PATH, it is $2 cheaper but it is so much more trouble.

Take this one: http://www.nyairportservice.com/ if you can get to one of their pick up locations. Its a lot cheaper.

I had one girl in my group leave early for a flight so cab fare split might be possible.

You can probably leave the interview during lunch if you might miss your flight. They kind of leave you alone for lunch with the students and I'm sure they won't mind of you leave early.

I want an interview at NYU!...Now that I am done venting haha 🙂...lets get to your question. Speaking as a native New Yorker, you are going to be well off taking a cab (those yellow cars) and heading to the airport that way (JFK, Lag, or Newark). Call up NYU and ask if they have a shuttle service that you can use to get to the airport. This way you can minimize the costs.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions everyone. There are obviously cheaper and easier options but I think I am going to take the shuttle and pray that it doesn't arrive late or take too long on the way to the airport. I lived near S.F. all my life and I still get lost to this day (I am horrible with directions)...I really don't think I can maneuver my way through N.Y.C. and not get lost.
