hey everyone,
Iam done with nyu interview....
It was pretty cool the old man who interviewed me was very sweet person. He asked me general q's like .......tell me about ur family, strength and weakness, ......and if i have any q's for him.....
we were around 22 of us...... as usual many indians....
then there was long tour. Financial aid session was helpful we asked her so many q's ...and then was lunch with an advanced standing student.

bye,
lebelle

lebelle,
good to know ur interview went nice.
Can u tellme what was the score range of the applicants in the interview. And have any of them given their part 2?
When will u knoe ur scores.?
cheers

hey callous,

I actually didn't ask for anybody's scores .......but one person whom I happened to know ...his was 87 . I also dont know if they had taken part 2 either. Iam not sure when they'll let us know probably mid dec.....

good luck,
lebelle

If your interview was on the 19th of november, you would've most likely met my friend who gave a very formal introduction of the nyu advanced standing program to the 17 or so students who had come for the interview. By the way, NYU plans to cut down on the number of seats to a 100 for the coming year.

🙄

good luck to all u guys..
cheers.

dr hannibal...the guy who came for orientation was someone called raj,is taht your friend?callous i think NYU gets close to a 1000 applications each yewar...but somewhere close to 100 get accepted do the math, what happens to the rrest may be rejection or who knows they opted out after being selected(not very probable) its not easy to get into anywhere so rejoice those who get accepted

Miss Amy Knowles gave us an introduction to the adv standing prog prior to the college tour.

If you've interviewed at NYU.... you're doing good. It is rarely that I've heard a person *failing* the interview at NYU. Lemme put it this way, all the people who interviewed along with me are in my class (there were two others besides me). Also, some of my friends who recollect their respective interviews show simillar results.

I dunno about any Raj in my class (must be from a senior year). Hey, the 100 seats is just a passing rumour. It may or may not carry weight to it (gotta wait and watch).

Keep the questions coming.

dr.hannibal,

Hi dr.hannibal,
i applied to NYU in the 3rd week of October. i still have not heard anything from them. i have a score of 88 and a GPA of 2.53. i was really worried whether my GPA is too low to get an interview cll. do i have any chances at NYU and around when should i expect an interview call from them? any help would be appreciated.

sanju

I sent out my application in the first week of september last year and received a call for interview in the first week of october (thats one month). It shouldnt really concern you now cuz I have heard of people having had to wait for about 3 months before they got an interview call.

Also, have you received that blue and white postcard telling you that your application is complete?

You shouldnt be concerned about your GPA that much but you should have a good enough reason to explain why it is that way if they ask you during the interview. You have done well in your part-1 and that is more important. Also, before you start soul searching, lemme reiterate that your gpa is ok (PS- is it an ECE evaluation report?)

Just try to keep in touch with them on a regular basis to know the status (recommendations- dont do it on a daily basis though). Once every ten days sounds good.

Furthermore, I have already met a few students who came in for an interview (your scores seem to be fine).

hi dr hannibal,
that was a real morale booster. My enthusiasm had been in dumps lately. to answer your question, yes that GPA has been calcultaed by the ECE. Also i did recieve the postcard but it said that my ADA score had not reached. i called them up a few days later and they said that the application packet was complete and that they had recieved the ada score after the postcard was mailed. also they do not tell the status over the phone.
which year of advanced standing are you in currently? also could you tell me what the cutoff was last year. i have applied to BU , UPenn and NYU. NYU is my best bet, ( at least thats what i think). i have an interview with BU in Jan.

sanju.

Thank you Dr hannibal.......

you have been a great help.

lebelle

hii dr_hannibal,
First i will really appreciate the effort put by you to help fellow foreign dentists. i have a question for you. my part 1 score is 93, but ECE GPA is low(1.6). I am quite interested in joining NYU in advanced DDS program. Can you throw some light on my chances of acceptance?? keep up the good job..
byee good_for_all

good for all,may i ask how your ece evaluation is so low, maybe there was a mistake,u can try other evaluating services and get it done again...i have heard that WES gives a higher evaluation,by the way i like your name:clap:

hi! everone,
I have just applied to nyu. Anyone has idea by which time i will get interview?

That is precisely what is wrong. There is a marked discrepancy between ECE and other evaluation services. I mean, I got an ECE evaluation done first and got a low GPA. I applied to another evaluation service called WES and viola, my GPA shot up. So, if you've got a few extra bucks that you were plannin on blowing during your next visit to atlantic city, you might as well try this gamble and see if it succeeds.

Happy thanksgiving to you all.

Dr hannibal,
as i had mentioned earlier my GPA is 2.53. I have already submitted my application to colleges. does it make any sense now to get the eval done from wes? also if i do get it done( apparently) they do it in 2 weeks, can i send the colleges my new GPA( if it is different from the ECE one) and wil they consider it. any help regarding this would be appreciated.

hii dr_hannibal,
even i have the same question as sanju, can we send them other evaluation report than ECE and ask to consider it. And ya thanks for replying... Happy thanksgiving to everyone.. byee good_for_all

I dont think it would be prudent to do that. If it is of any help. most people interviewing you know about this discrepancy. Also, we come from a system of education that believes in the 50% rule (a doctor's gotta get a score of 50% to pass). Whereas, over here it is 70% (again they know of this discrepancy too). Which does explain *to an extent* why your evaluated gpa *could* be low. Most of the interviewers for this very reason look at your nat'l board scores as the main yardstick to judge you. They do consider your experience in the US as equally important. The cherry on top would be if you had a letter of recommendation from some professor in the US (preferably related to the dental field)

Jus wanted to clarify a few things more-

At NYUCD, you'd be interviewed by different faculty members i.e, everyone would go to a different faculty member. Most (it is a significantly high percentage lets say 98%) people attending the interview would see themselves in the next year batch unless they got a better option. If your interview process was smooth, you wouldnt have to worry.

dr hannibal...i heard nyu gets over 1000 applicants each year, and you say 98% of interviewed gets accepted,so is nyu selective on who they acll for interviews?

They do get a 1000 applications but this also includes people who give there exams in december and get there results by february. By february, most of the class profile is already set. Also, there is some filtering based on nat'l board scores too.

does this mean that people with low nat'l board scores dont get in?
answer- no, but again for them it is a bigger struggle. Now before everybody starts pming with their stats (it is ok to pm me), I'd say that most people that I've come across in these boards have reasonably good stats. A score of 80 and above is definetely in the good side.

does this mean that people applying to nyucd during the last 15 days of the application deadline get ignored?

again the answer is a no. But, you can imagine that, with the class almost already decided by february, it sure becomes a problem. There is a high likelihood that people beome *statistics* (it is anybody's baby).

I would reiterate what I said a while earlier, the only *trick* tht I've known with NYUCD is to apply early

It is so easy for me to think about a 1000 students applying and still think in terms of how much easier it is to get into NYU.

I myself was a bundle of nerves filled with a lot of self doubt. No matter what I say, there is still gonna be a lot of apprehension among you all. I used to come back to sdn during that time and jus loiter about trying to find some good words of advice from my peers and hang around in the lounge tryin to acculturize myself. All the while, I was always thinkin about what I was gonna do with the *what if * question. And, again there is only one answer to that, improve your resume and cross your fingers and hope for the best.

Dr. hannibal

hi dr_hannibal,
i do not have any work experienceinUS.i am looking for oppurtunities to work as an assistant in any dental clinic.so can you tell me wether having no work experience in US will bring down my chances for admission?

dr hannibal....what do international dentists do after they graduatewith DDS ,is it easy for them to get an associateship, what are your plans,i know that starting your own clinic could amount to another huge loan but whats the general idea

Dr. hannibal

he is prob right .. no specific variables have yet been attributed for a guaranteed admission ..

i applied in Oct. 2002 ..thats right .. OCT 2002 and got rejected for Fall 2003. i re-activated my appln for fall 2004 and only this week got a letter from NYU for an interview sometime in April 2004.. i havent even been able to get them on the phone to schedule an interview so i guess ill have to work on that one early next week..

during the one and half year period, i NEVER called NYU on the status of my appln as i thought my scores were too low to get into ANY adv. standing dds program .. i passed both the parts in the low 80's ..

so DONT GIVE UP .. u never know ..

good luck all ...
