First of all there is no way of knowing what is the selection criteria of any school or what is currently going on there, unless one of SDN member has an insider information available (by that I mean knowing someone in the admission committee and amongst clerical/admission office staff). That too is no gurantee as I know it first-hand. My application to Temple U was rejected (before interview). I knew someone in the regular DMD admission committee and asked him to enquire about the 'Criteria for Rejection'. This person, otherwise very close to me, came back with the answer that he would not like to get involve in advanced standing admission issues lest it put his faculty position in jeopardy! I am sure there are people who would have opened my file to take a peep. But mostly no one wants to risk for something trivial (for him/them not for me!!).
NYU Criteria (word of mouth from interviewed and/or selected candidates + my personal overseas telephone call to one of the assistant dean of admissions in April/ May 2003) are all that you have mentioned, i.e. NBDE + TOEFL scores + GPA + Experience. Scores + GPA are of primary importance.
As far as I know (from a current student), they will be interviewing through April. Last year they admitted 125 candidates. My best guess is that at this point they still have 50+ seats left. This is based on the fact that interview started late this year (by nearly 4 weeks). Last year interview started on Jan 6 and I was interviewed on March 31. almost at the end! Yet they conducted interviews for few candidates right through April (and kept offering positions to odd candidates while lots of us already received letter confirming wait-listed position!!!!) and until first week of May (am I right Khurram...as you were one of the May candidate?). For example two days after I received wait-list letter someone with a part I score of 85 got an offer, a whole one mark/ percentile less than me, LOL, and whole 2-8 percentile less than lots other waitlisted candidates more LOL. So take your guess and tell me what was the criteria!!!!!! It would be pure conjecture, won't it? Also when they opened the waitlist, about a week or so before orientation, someone with same Part I score as me was offered a position and I was left holding the waitlisted letter (along with many others)!!! Once again what was the criteria. To cap everything, this year I received the admission offer in mid-Feb and one of the earliest lucky waitlisted candidates from last year without further interview! I am not complaining, yet my question is what is the difference between my application last and this year (I didn't improve my score etc)? In short once again what is the criteria?
After I was wait-listed at UCSF I called up PD Dr. Kirkland and asked him about what went wrong with my interview etc. He said my written was excellent, preparations average and interview was one of the best. He pointed out that since they have accepted candidates with average score of 90+ I was held back (my score 86). Yet that is not entirely true as in my knowledge at least 4 candidates with scores in 80's were selected in UCSF this year! Once again what is the clear-cut criteria? BTW I am still wait-listed at UCSF this year and waiting..............
No one knows any clearly defined criteria of any school. So let's hope for the best. In my experience NYU will call a number of candidates in 86-90 range in the near future. One other problem is half or more than half of the candidates called for interview to any school or selected subsequently are not SDN member. So we can never get a clear picture as regard score and other criteria pertaining to those candidates.
This post is in response to several enquiries about admission criteria I see in this and other threads. Hence I decided to share the personal experiences. I remember my state of mind last year at this point (after receiving rejections from every other school I applied and last hope was NYU) and hence good luck to everyone waiting to hear from NYU,
