I just called to set my intrv date for the 19th, the guy I talked to suggested a hotel. I called and it costs around 550 a night! Someone please tell me I can get a room for less than $100, my ass is in big debt right now and I just can't afford a $200 room (probably like the rest of you guys).

try using online websites like www.hotels.com or something similar.

Try renting a car and sleeping in it... That would be like 20 bucks

yeah...good advise....nj hotels are a lot cheaper. i'm staying with family in hackensack then taking the bus to port authority and taking a cab from there....hassle yes but i'm saving like 400 bucks.

The west side YMCA is clean and secure, but no frills, basically like a dorm room. I think rooms are less than $100. I paid ~$70 2-3 years ago.

I really appreciate all the responses. I can now worry less about the costs.

I was also wondering if anyone has stayed in a students dorm room, maybe pay them like 50 bucks. Thay way I can get to campus really fast, and it will be cheap. I was thinking about making a post in the dental students forum.

Anyway, thanks again for all the responses

never thought of that, thats smart

i heard student dorms in NY are tiny. there aren't any space for someone to sleep there.

For those who got interviews from NYU...when did you have your applications sent? mine was sent out july 19, still no words from nyu

or find hostels.... studentuniverse.com or hostels.com it prolly be like 30 bucks a night ...maybe u can stay in the city for like 3 nights....and explore the city a day b4 the interview and a day after... 😎

"american dream hostel" is only 42 bucks a month and is 2 blocks away from the dental school.

I just talked to a booking agent about hotels in new jersey, he said the days inn in ridgefield is 14 miles from nyu, and would take a couple hours to get there. i know some of you mentioned staying in a room in nj, but should i expect to be traveling a couple hours the day of my interview? thanks guys

for anyone that knows anything about NY transportation, what is the cheapest way to get from la guardia airport to days inn at hicksville?
also, how much would a cab cost for 2-3 miles to get from the days inn to the train station that is nearby. this days inn costs about 88, it sounds pretty good to me.

I am not sure about the exact location you're talking about but when you get to laguardia one of the options you have is to take a group taxi..it's like a minivan and they have about 8-10 people in it. You have to prepay for the service at the counter inside the airport and the van runs about every 20-30 mins. I am not sure what time your interview is but if it's in the afternoon or late morning, you could just get an early flight and get there the same day and then come back the same day or so.

Cab From LGA to Hicksville will probably be 60 dollars. You can call a car service company (516-621-1111) and they can give you the exact number. The yellow cabs dont like going to long island. You can also take a cab or a bus to a train station (Long Island Rail road) and get on the hicksville line and take it right there. This will be the less expensive option.

hicksville is also a ways away from NYU. You have to take a cab to the LIRR (prob about 10 bucks) and then get to NYC (LIRR is about 24 peak, round trip) and tehn get down to NYU (15 taxi with tip)... It will take an hour to get to the city from hicksville and then anouther 20 minutes to get down to NYU. 🙂 I may be on teh train with you in the morning. 🙂

great advice, i never thought of that. do you know if that van goes straight to campus?

so, i think i'm going to take a taxi from laguardia airport to a hotel in manhattan (midtown) and then taxi to the school. how much do you guys think this will cost? i'm assuming that the hotel will cost $300. 🙁

LGA-->Mid-town $45-55

Mid-town-->school $10-15

laguardia to midtown should run about 40 tops..i've done the drive about 5 times. never gone over 40 (tip and tolls included)

LGA is the same distance. It shouldnt be a big expense.

I would say 90% yes. I am not sure where NYU campus is exactly but I did this last year when I had to go to KeyCorp office in manhattan. I know that the van service will drop you off in order of what comes first on their route.

Or do this:

From La Guardia Airport
Take Carey bus from arrivals area. Bus runs daily into the city every 20 minutes from 7 a.m. to midnight. (718) 632-0506.
