Can someone please comment on the new exam schedule for the entering class at NYU. I heard it is 1 cumilitive exam for the whole semester? If there are any upper classman at NYU, can you please share your thoughts

For the class of 2011, instead of multiple exams for each course, there will be 1 cumulative exam for ALL your courses at 1 time (think 1 huge all day exam).

I think their reasoning for doing this is to get you in that mind set for the national boards exam.

Your class is the guinea pig for this setup.

It was proposed to the class of 2010 and got very little support from us.

My personal opinion? I think it's a bad idea. I like to know how I'm doing all along and I also like to be able to "do better" on another exam to balance out a bad exam.

I hate complaining about exams, but I think I just threw up a little bit inside my mouth...

I am with you. I would rather experience the feeling of taking the boards just once, not at the end of every semester. Anyway, we'll do what we gotta do.

One exam for the entire semester in an effort to simulate NDBE? That's insane and runs counter to the NDBE in the first place. The exam was created as an overall, equalized assessment of every US dental student's knowledge after their first two years and final two years in dental school. By mimicking the NDBE's format in rarely testing, NYU has basically forfeited their ability to prepare students for the exam in an efficient manner. Student success on the NDBE comes through long term preparation and repetition of subject material. Instead of actually judging each student's progression over time and giving each student an opportunity to make up for a marginal grade through subsequent testing phases, it appears the administrators have other ideas in mind.

It is understandable why the previous class rejected the idea. Not only is it a disservice to the students, it also facilitates complacency among staff and students. With such a huge block of time between testing, a student cannot judge his/her own abilities within the system but once. I think if you ask most students, they would tell you that they don't mind being tested in shorter intervals. It allows for much easier dissection of the topics and gives an instructor a better picture of the coursework progression and room for adjustments should they be necessary.

This is without question material suited for guinea pigs. The professors only have to give one exam for the entire year. It's a fine example set forth to the rest of the student body that is trying to follow in their footsteps to become professionals. Just check your students' progress like you check your patients' teeth every checkup. Actually, lets don't even do it that frequent. Lets check the students once a semester and pass/fail them. That makes perfect sense.

i graduated from NYU in 2005. My class were the guinea pigs for the new curriculum you guys have now. I feel sorry for anyone who has to go thru the whole process

Problem with NYU: nobody does there job correctly and nobody-especially the deans know how to run a school. Bottom line. NYU is a steaming pile of cow dung.

NYU is finally having a dean and the dean might use UCSF curriculum as a template for NYU, which means NYU might slowly move toward the pass/fail system.

I'm a D2 at NYU, and I heard about the change in curriculum for the incoming students. All I can say is good luck, you've got some work to do !!!!

wow, so it is 1 exam for all of your classes???? Holy crap. I just got into NYU and Im so glad to be in D-School but thats crazy. I would rather have shorter exams that way I can kind of see where I stand and how much more studying I need to do for the next one...

Is it at least pass/fail?

It sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I think someone needs to go Zidane on whoever was responsible.
