I am going to try to ask this question here as well..
I am trying to choose between NYU, NOVA and Stony Brook. Never thought it would be this tough. I like different things about each school and would love to hear any feedback from the students that go there. Also is it true that stony brook students go home on the weekends? Also is it hard to survive in NYU, heard the professors can be very hard and can make your life tough? NOVA: not having enough patients, is that a big problem? Thanks guys!!

Go where it costs more. You'll be happier that way. You'll never have to wonder "what if.." when you change your oil on your tercel.

Stony Brook; you know choices like this do not need sdn threads. Nova? NYU ? are you serious?

i go to nyu and it's wonderful. stonybrook is in the middle of nowhere and is really isolating. there are fun, brilliant people at nyu and the staff and dental experience here is second to none.

200 k difference, thats what matters. All d schools are the same, they all have their problems go to the cheapest

Don't go to NOVA... patients are indeed hard to come by and they make it so hard for you to even start working on patients... they just switched their system so it may be better by the time you get to clinic... but all in all its a mess right now

how come you went to columbia then?

Only you can answer this. Make a pros and cons list. You could ask this to 3 people and get 3 different answers, but in the end you are the one that will be going there for 4 years.

no.

I picked Columbia over Stony Brook and UCLA, because Columbia was the best option I had; it happened to be the expensive one. In OPs case, his best choice also happens to be the cheapest. You pay the extra if its worth it, not for +400K schools like USC or NYU. My two cents.
UOP is one example, you save a year that could potentially bring you an extra 100K, ad a year of your life; to me thats a good deal.

You advise the OP to take the cheapest school because all D schools are the same yet you chose Columbia over Stony Brook???
Stony Brook is ~30K cheaper than Columbia tuition wise and also way cheaper in terms of living expenses.

It's too late for that guy/gal, but the OP still has time. The answer is Stonybrook. Why is this even a question? And in the OP's case, the cheapest school is a great school so say yes to Stonybrook and never look back.

I'm gonna make the answer simple since we get this question twice a week now and it's not getting across all the noises.

PICK THE CHEAPEST SCHOOL.

Let me put this in another way using data from 'The Millionaire Next Door.' 95% of luxury cars sold in America are NOT sold to millionaires. The average price of a car bought by millionaires is less than $25,000. The average self-made millionaire became that by spending and conserving wisely, not competing with their neighbors over namebrand goods. Doctors and dentists are horrible accumulator of wealth due to living it up to their namebrand status.

When you see some dude going to an expensive school, driving an expensive car, wearing an expensive suit, taking expensive vacations and so forth, you must remember that all those things represent debt money or money he NO LONGER OWN. I'm guessing all you predents wanna be out of debt and be millionaires sooner than later?

wow, can you read?:laugh::laugh:

Haters gonna hate, what can i say

can't read... do i go to the cheapest school, unless it's columbia? well my mind's made up now.. cya at columbia next fall

Dude, you're making this a personal fight. I am a researcher, a biochemist. I picked columbia b/c for what I want to do, there are three options: UCSF, Harvard, and Columbia. Stop hating, not every thing is about money.

You know dentists can do other things besides opening a shop, but unfortunately for a lot of us dentistry is just about money

Not hating, just curious. I've been on SDN for a long time now and there have been very few people who say they picked Columbia because they desire a career in research. Usually it's something dumb like "My patients will care that I went to Columbia" or "I want to take out large loans to live large in NYC!"

not to add any fuel to the fire...but isn't Stony Brook known as a great research school too? (and a smaller class size= more opportunity for research due to less competition?). Just sayin'

If you're a researcher, then why didn't you choose Stony over Columbia considering Stony received over 6x more ($4.2 million vs. $700,000) in NIDCR grants for the FY 2010?

Hup

And to answer the OP's question:

This is a no brainer.. Go to Stony. Take the 100k+ you will save and run with it..

Hup

See, things are quite complicated here at Columbia lol, plz read carefully before making dumb comments

way to make Columbia look like a bunch of a**hats. 👎

we're actually really nice here. 🙂

Yea, Charmm is making students at Columbia look stupid with his contradicting comments.

He should try not to advise people when clearly he has no idea what the hell he is saying. Way to look stupid.

I advised Stony Brook is the best choice among his/her choices based on my friends at Nova and NYU say; why is that stupid? please elaborate. Also, my comments are not contradictory. I picked what was best for me, why do you or others care if I made the right or wrong choice by going to Columbia? This thread is not about me I am pretty happy with my choice, its funny though how people are defensive about my comments. By the way, for me, Stony brook was 40K cheaper than Columbia not 200 K. I said what I believed, stupid or wise, thats my problem. You people, mind your own business:laugh:

@ Flapatron: comments of one student wont make an entire university look good or bad, I have no idea why you think like that.

On another forum, a lot of people where beating a Harvard student that its not worth going there and he should not advise people to go to HSDM. The whole point is to share your ideas, why do you guys get so upset ? and take things personally? I am seriously surprised.

Nova baby, nice weather and scantly dressed women, cannot complain

Nova- If you are going to spend the money to go private, go somewhere near a beach.

Sure the beach is nice.... but the administration has Zero common sense... its like an idiot is running the show.... dont go to school here... and don't listen to D1s or D2s they don't know how bad it is until they get into clinic and see the mess that it really is

agreed. Currently a student in NOVAa and it is a whole chaos out here.

Do not every choose NOVA. Administration have zero common sense and

all they are after is ur money.
