hi all,
it sucked how Steve from nyu housing told me that the on campus housing space is limited and we have to live off campus. it is also hard to find a place to live when I dont get to see the apartment cus I am in california. the NYU housing page doesn't suggest any solution for people who never live in NYC. is there any suggestion how to find a place to live where most dental students are? or any suggestion how to find a dental roomate for the incoming year? or any forum for NYU students??

Thanks alot!!

first, join the NYU facebook group and post that you are looking for someone to split a place with. I did this and had great success within the first day. If you're lucky, one of these people will be from NYC & will be able to provide some insight into housing.

As for apartment searching... try craigslist.com and the nytimes.com. search gramercy, murray hill/kips bay. The dental school is located between these 2 neighborhoods. I found lots of "nice" 2-3 bedroom places that were less than $1500/person.

I'm flying to NYC from florida in late june to find a place. I know california is a bit further, but i'm sure you can find something cheap on jetblue.

hopefully this helped, jb!🙂

Craigslist worked pretty well for me when I moved from CA to NY. The school is located on 24th St. and 1st Ave. Avenues are far apart, streets are closer, I'd say if you want to walk to school in under 10 minutes your range is from 14th-30th street, and from FDR to 3rd Ave.

There are certain apartment complexes that seems to house a large number of dental school kids: Kip's Bay, Waterside, Stuyvesant/Peter Cooper. They're all very walkable to school and the first 2 don't have a 30/70 policy that a lot of NYC apartments have.

what is a 30/70 policy?? thanks for all you guy's input!

It means you have to show that your income is 30X the rent or get a cosigner whose income is 70X the rent. So if your parent's are making 140K you will be fine. Doesn't work for me!!!! so I'm going to dorms!

oh, and they dont accept student loans as source of income. Waterside instead of all these wants 3X rent as your security deposite, I dont know about kips bay

ya I think you are lucky because I took your advice and got one reply. It reminded me of what it was like to have roomates in undergrade. How the majority of all people that inhabit this earth do not know how to compromise or trust those who they do not know. I've found facebook to be hit and miss with advice or information as well. I don't know maybe I'm just a guy that people take one look at and don't like, who knows. BTW I'm from the left coast as well and looking for a roomate.

What about living outside of the city, say in NJ or Conneticut? What I'm thinking is I could possibly spend $200,000 to buy a place, instead of forking out $3000 a month for my wife and I to rent in Manhattan. I wouldn't mind commuting, but I have no idea where would be a good/safe place to live, with an easy commute.

Go into the off campus housing site from www.nyu.edu/housing. There you can search for roommates. I've browsed that and I've seen several dental students looking for roommates. That's better than facebook.

Best.

you guys should try stuyvesant town...it's within a mile of the school and the apartments are nice and reasonably price (relatively speaking)...or you can commute from queens or nj....but that gets to be a hassle sometimes with late night studying at the library....when my husband went there...he stayed at stuyvesant and he loved it there

Yes, it is really hard to find place to live near the dental school.
I am nyucd 2010 and when I got here for the first time, I could not find any place to live for a month near school unless I pay broker fees.

Well, I am moving out from Waterside Plaza on August 1st. I am looking for a person who can take my apartment. It is 2 bed/2 bath and the room I use is the master bedroom which has its own private bathroom. My room mate is also NYUCD2010. The rent is 3682 for the apartment, so each will pay 1842 and utilities. It'll be a 14 month contract, ending on September 30th 2008.

Female only. Asian preferred.( my room mate is Asian)
If anyone is interested in this apartment, plz email me.
